This Coastal Brown Bear was making the most of a healthy salmon run. On this morning she caught a half dozen large Silver Salmon. Here she closes the distance on a salmon (visible just outside her reach). This proved to be the salmon's final moments of life. The bear smacked it with her paws, stunned it, and grabbed it with her powerful jaws. The circle of life unfolded right in front of us. Un-cropped image. Silver Salmon Creek, Lake Clark National Park, Alaska.

Coastal Brown Bear (Ursus arctos), on a desperate drive to fatten up for the pending winter season and her hibernation, pursues a salmon. Here she crashes down on the fish, and literally has it between her enormous paws . . . but this one got away. Love the intensity in her eyes. The Cook Inlet, Lake Clark National Park, Alaska.

"Daddy's Little Football". Client Newborn Shoot, Washington, USA

January 30th, 2010 © 2009 Doug van Kampen, All Rights Reserved

This was a few minutes before she fell asleep...a full belly and some rocking from Mom and Dad have a tendency to do that!

Thank you to everyone who's provided such supportive comments and feedback the last couple of days regarding my previous post. This shoot has really made me sit back and think about the direction I should take my work in regards to capturing not only the best moments in life, but has given me a ton of confidence interacting with clients in a given situation.

I completely understand now what John means about wanting to do it for free if he could.

To think that these images will be a part of this little girl's life for decades to come is humbling...such a wonderful gift this life of ours is.

Coastal Brown Bear (Ursus arctos) family. New mom with her first litter of cubs. They are about 7-8 months old. Mom proved to be an excellent fisher - she (usually) shared her catch with the cubs. Both cubs (females) carried full little bellies off the beach on this morning. Here the cubs warily eye each other - they were constantly sparring while mom was fishing. Lake Clark National Park, Alaska.

I love our local community gardens - such a vibrant shared space of humans and wild creatures. Not that everyone gets along all the time. They don't. Both humans, and particularly birds, find things to squabble about. But, at the end of the day, it all works. And the gardens are filled with a chaotic abundance of flowers, vegetables and fruit, herbs, wildflowers, flying things, creatures, critters - Life.

This is the ever calm and curious mother Tree Swallow. She has become fascinated by Emmy. I"ll see if I can get a shot of them together this week. (And, of course, of the babies!) Amazing.

GREAT for baby shower favor, gift and for new mom !!

The weather was crappy in coastal Alaska. Rained for three days straight. Still overcast when we headed out to the coast in late afternoon. This mother Brown Bear, two spring cubs in tow nearby, caught several salmon. Here she ran right past us. No cropping on this image. She couldn’t get much closer. Light was not great. She missed the fish. But it was so exciting to have a ringside seat with a view into this bear’s life and those of her cubs. Fattening up before winter isn’t optional for this species. They need the fat to get through about 6 months of hibernation. You can see the intensity of the situation in the bear’s face - along with remnants of her last meal and a fish scale or two on her head.

We've learned to keep shooting even after it seems like there's no light left. True we weren't going to get any details on the bear's face - but the sunset was spectacular. It was about 9:15 pm and this mother Brown Bear (Ursus arctos) had just finished off a huge salmon that she caught, and shared with her two cubs. The tide was almost in, and fishing time was about to end. Here she seems to be contemplating the end of a good day for her and her cubs. Lake Clark National Park, Alaska.

Happy Mother's Day to this new Bluebird mom!

My little sister just gave birth to a healthy and beautiful baby. United Hospital Dhaka, Bangladesh

It was almost sunset when we came across this Coastal Brown Bear mother fishing in the shallows. The tide was coming in quickly, and her fishing spot was getting deeper with water. She proved to be an expert fisher, nabbing this big silver salmon - she plucked it right out of the water with her teeth! The fish gave a valiant struggle, trying to shake itself loose from her jaws. All to no avail - once the bear clamped down it was all over for the fish. The Cook Inlet, Lake Clark National Park, Alaska.

I got an unexpected visitor as I made my way down from Skyline Trail on Mount Rainier. The camera had a polarizer on as I'd been shooting marmots in the sun, pretty sure that's why the colors are so saturated. Never got a shot at the doe, wasn't tall enough to get above the undergrowth. :-)

About 8:30 pm. Tide starting to come back in. The water is getting deep but the fish are present. And this mother Brown Bear (Ursus arctos) and her two spring cubs are ready for dinner. The cubs stayed close to mom here, since there were several other bears around. Lake Clark National Park, Alaska.

That's what my son said. "It has all the colors of the world!"

I really love the way this came out. 12 squares makes a nice-sized baby blanket or lap throw.

For a very special little one. Finished on September 22, 2009.

My last pregnant photo taken in the delivery room the night before she was born. (The date on the picture is wrong)

Sesión tomada en El Níspero, en el Valle de Antón, Panamá.

I'm calling her "Blossom", and she is the latest sock monkey hat I've made. She is not for sale on etsy yet, as this was a personalized order. But, I could be persuaded...

Just for your Baby shower ! See my profile for more details
