I got the call last night that my mattress would be delivered between the hours of 1 and 5pm. It was one of those automated voice messages where the times are announced in a different pre-recorded voice than the rest of the message. Well, typically that's how it is. This message had not just 1 or 2 voices informing me on my mattresses delivery, but 5. Five. It was the most schizophrenic message.
I saved it.
I'm now working from home but just a glance to my left from the couch has me looking at my new, very tall mattress with a deep desire to nap.
The instructions seem simple enough. Do we have to lay diagonally?

YAY! I'll get to sleep on it for one night then I'm off to NYC for 3 nights! Hope my niece enjoys the new bed whilst I'm away! The light is bad...it's in shades of robin blue, tan and brown.
I'm a bit worried because it's seriously wayyyyyy higher than my last bed and Spike had already used a stepstool to get up. He is going to need a phone book on that step stool now.

A new mattress thanks to my tax refund (yay!) I'm sure its going to take me a few nights to get used to not sinking down into the middle of the bed plus this one is a little firmer than the old one. I'm actually excited about going to sleep tonight!
52 Weeks - Week 4
The new memory foam mattress finally came. (Ultimate verdict: Yuck. Save yourself the $600.) The box was quite smashed up for a professional delivery. Seems like some "hero" deilverymen out there don't want to ask for help and would rather bang around anonymous customers' wares than look lose face in front of their macho co-workers. Yes, I blame machismo for this.

Here is our memory foam mattress before unsealing it. Once unsealed, it expanded and became mattreess-sized in a matter of minutes. This thing was $600 and is way too hard. I do not recommend it.

191031: Because there was a danger that bacteria could have got into the tissue, I was prescribed antibiotics. Normally I only take antibiotics in the worst case (which is almost never the case), but here I couldn't assess the risk and I gave in.
5 (!) weeks ago I ordered a mattress from Karstadt, which I could finally pick up. When the next time in 8-10 years a new mattress is due, I will buy it somewhere else. 5 weeks delivery time is too much, I think. (Btw: "ScheiĆe" means "SHIT". A very important German word.)

191031: Weil die Gefahr bestand, dass Bakterien ins Gewebe geraten sein kƶnnten, bekam ich fiese Antibiotika verschrieben. Normalerweise nehme ich nur im allergrƶĆten Notfall Antibiotika (was so gut wie nie der Fall ist), aber hier konnte ich das Risiko nicht einschƤtzen und habe mich gefĆ¼gt.
Ich habe vor 5 (!) Wochen eine Matratze bei Karstadt bestellt, die ich nun endlich abholen konnte. Wenn das nƤchste Mal in 8-10 Jahren eine neue Matratze fƤllig ist, kaufe ich die woanders. 5 Wochen Lieferzeit finde ich doof.

Well, it's my new mattress. It's all memory-foamy and I looove it.
Also, after reading The Hunger Games in 24 hours I bought the final two books, Catching Fire and Mockingjay. Wooooo.
When I moved to New York in 1999, I went to one of those sketchy mattress warehouses where some lecherous-seeming old man watched me get on and off about fifteen mattress as if there was a difference between the $200 and the $250 models. I bought one. They delivered it to my apartment in Astoria. I moved to Williamsburg. Then we moved to Bay Ridge. And the mattress always came with us. Strangely, we had four, yes four, different bed frames in that time, but always that craptacular mattress.
Yesterday, when we took it off the bed to drag to the basement, I measured its height. You know, in the spot where the coils had completely collapsed. Six inches.
We got this delicious new memory foam mattress that has inflated to ten inches.
I used to think that when people blamed their aches and pains on mattresses they were total bougie assholes. But now, someone must confiscate my membership card to the proletariat.
I have become one of them.
11.21.2014: I was silly and dragged this mattress upstairs. I thought I could wait until my family got home but lost patience quickly. How I got this upstairs with a landing took muscle and math but it was done with a great deal of effort. (I definitely did not have to exercise that night.)
