The Royal & Ancient Golf Club Of St. Andrews clubhouse

Dirt Bikes, MotoGP, Practice, Silverstone, 2010

We toured the eastern part of scotland from Edimburgh to Inverness via Aberdeen on board this fantastic 1961 Jaguar MKII - 3,8 liters - An "old lady" which even today inspires great comments.

We managed to organise this KAP Session on St Andrews Old course - Images taken from a camera suspended on a Kite line.

Very light wind and again the Dan Leigh R8 Delta did a wonderful job (so did Heidy !)

About the middle of the tenth century, Andrew became the patron saint of Scotland. Several legends state that the relics of Andrew were brought under supernatural guidance from Constantinople to the place where the modern town of St. Andrews stands today (Pictish, Muckross; Gaelic, Cill Rìmhinn).

The Old Course at St Andrews is one of the oldest golf courses in the world and possibly the oldest surviving course in Scotland[1]. The Old Course is a public course over common land in St Andrews, Fife, Scotland and is held in trust by The St Andrews Links Trust under an act of Parliament. The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews (R&A) club house sits adjacent to the first tee and although it might be imagined that they own the course, they are but one of many clubs that have playing privileges on the course, along with the general public.

There is no real knowledge of when golf was first played over the grounds that now constitute the Old Course. The earliest written evidence is a license issued in 1552, which permitted the community to rear rabbits on the links and "play at golf, futball, schuteing ... with all other manner of pastimes." The first written record of golf being played at the Old Course dates to 1574

Kids of all ages play soccer with whatever they can get their hands (feet!) on. And they start young. We had provided a softball and bat. The bat got set aside and the softball turned into..... a soccer ball!

This Sunday at SICC during the Asian Amateur Golf Championships, these two were just a couple of all the monkeys right in the middle of the course the championship was being played on.

Much of the Eastern Usambara Mountains were deforested for tea in the 1800 and early 1900's. This plantation remains active today. While the landscape is breathtaking, the loss of forests has been devastating for local economies because of reduced agriculture productivity, migrant working populations, increased disease etc... Today, remaining tracts of land are being organized into consolidated blocks and reforestation efforts are underway. Agroforestry is practiced which helps maintain deforestation rates. However, today deforestation continues in order to make up for reduced agriculture productivity and to supply wood for cooking and other energy needs.

Is it possible to NOT enjoy yourself while out golfing in weather like this? We both shot over 100 and still had no complaints! I think I went a bit too crazy with the curves in this one.

Water quality (and shortage, particularly in the dry season) is an issue that crucially affects people living in the East Usamabara region. Poor water quality and supply have been linked with the spread of waterborne diseases such as cholera, typhoid, scabies, dysentery and trachoma. Women and children are disproportionally impacted by water borne diseases and importantly; these diseases are a major contributor of high infant mortality rates. Further, women are forced to either use polluted water or invest a large portion of their working day in collecting water. Stream water is often of poor quality having been polluted by upstream users with soap from washing clothes, utensils and people, mud, livestock excrement, and pesticides and fertilizers from agriculture from upstream farmers.

In addition to basic sustenance, the use of natural resources is often a large proportion of the livelihood needs for women in rural communities. For example, women in sub-Saharan Africa derive 30-50% of non-farm income from natural resources; in South Africa specifically this number increases to 80% or more.
