I wanted to give the photo a "painterly" look, so I tried the Orton Effect.
When the cherry trees are in bloom, Branch Brook Park in Newark, NJ is the place to be! It has the largest number of Cherry trees in the U.S.

Cuando los cerezos estan en flor, el parque de Branch Brook en Newark, New Jersey, es uno de los mejores lugares para verlos. Tiene la concentracion de cerezos mas alta de Estados Unidos.
A pair of recently repainted Delaware & Hudson GP38-2s idle in Conrail's Oak Island Yard after bringing DH 266 east earlier in the day. They would return west in the evening with a rested crew as DH 267. In the sky above, a Scandinavian Airlines flight is on final approach to Newark Airport. Both of these units have undoubtedly spent a lot of time in this former Lehigh Valley yard, both when built new for the LV and later when working for D&H/CP Rail.

I liked how they were catching the light.

A pair of brand new Conrail SD60Ms idle the morning sun at "91 Bay"...Conrail's locomotive servicing facility in Oak Island Yard.
The consecutively-numbered duo had led Conrail BUOI-6 into the yard earlier in the morning and were thankfully "posed" here out in the open before being reassigned.
Judging by the lack of any noticeable dirt, I'd assume this was their first trip east after being delivered.

A trio of six-axle Union Pacific EMDs spent Thanksgiving Weekend in 1993 at "91 Bay", Conrail's locomotive servicing facility in Oak Island Yard. The consist included an SD60M, SD40-2 and GP50. The power was surrounded by classic trailers of the era including those from KBS and Conrail.

A pair of CSX Dash 8s rest at the East End of Conrail's Oak Island Yard. This power would have brought the loaded Tropicana Orange Juice Train east earlier in the morning. The units will layover in Oak Island until the westbound OJT empties are ready to depart (typically in the evening). The GE pair is joined by a set of Conrail GP38-2s at the East End. Four-year-old 7543 still wore as-delivered "stealth" paint. It would later receive both YN2 and YN3 CSX paint before being retired after a fairly long career.

High noon sun and underexposed Kodachrome are a bad combination! However, I thought the subject made this interesting enough to share. An Oak Island Hump-assigned SD38//MT6 slug set is coupled to a recently rebuilt NJ Transit GP40PH-2. The NJT unit had just arrived from rebuilding at Conrail's Juniata Locomotive Shop and would soon be interchanged to its owner. The unusual combination was found on what I believe was (and may still be) the RIP track adjacent to the classification yard at Oak Island. The World Trade Center towers and the lower Manhattan skyline can be seen in the distance.

What turned out as a grab shot, I was on Delancey Street in Newark NJ, and I spotted this coming at me. I had JUST enough time to put the 18 wheeler on the side of the road, and stand on the passenger side running board for some height to get this grab shoot.

At various times during Conrail's relatively short existence, certain locomotive models would disappear from the roster only to reappear years later when traffic demand warranted it. GP30s and GP35s were often part of this cycle in and out of the Altoona deadline. One such resurgence occurred during the mid-90s. Here GP30 2175 (ex-RDG 3607) has arrived at "91 Bay", the locomotive servicing facility in Oak Island Yard and would soon be assigned to local service in northern New Jersey. Not long after, 2175 would be retired and sold, eventually becoming "Western Maryland 502" on the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad.

An interesting mix of power has gathered at the East End of Oak Island Yard. Conrail 6612 is a C32-8 that was rebuilt with a Dash 8-40C-style cab and nose. The mismatched number boards were a nice touch on an already odd unit. Rounding out the scene is a Conrail C36-7 and a Seaboard System (CSX) GP38.

Conrail SD45-2s were uncommon visitors to Newark, NJ in the early 1990s. On this particular day CR 6657 was found at 91 Bay, the locomotive servicing area in Conrail's Oak Island Yard.

Amtrak’s NextGen Acela trains are now entering services, some four years behind schedule. The days of the original Acela sets are now numbered, with several already withdrawn for breaking. First-gen unit #2007 speeds through Newark Liberty International Airport in the fading light, with downtown Newark visible in the distance.

Conrail SECS crosses the impressive Upper Bay drawbridge over Newark Bay behind an equally impressive six-unit consist. The sixth unit, barely visible here, was dead-in-tow CSX GP16 1796 which still wore Family Lines paint. This unit might have been headed for scrapping at Naporano in Newark.

A Soo Line SD40/SD40-2 duo leads D&H 266 into Oak Island Yard. During the mid-90s it was not uncommon to see Soo Line units mixed with CP and even D&H power on this train. In the distance, a brand new pair of bright blue Conrail SD60Ms stands out amid the dreary landscape. The muddy area to the left of the train and in the foreground was part of the D&H "intermodal facility" within Oak Island. It wasn't much to look at, but it did remain fairly active through the late 90s.
