One of the doorways into the surviving original buildings ofNewark Hospital which was rebuilt in 1996.
The impressive and gorgeous Gothic architecture of the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark New Jersey the seat of the Archdiocese of Newark is located immediately adjacent Newark’s Branch Brook Park just west of the downtown area. I went to school in Newark, at Rutgers University for the majority of my undergraduate studies, so always admired the immense stature and amazing architectural Gothic details of this truly remarkable house of worship. The sixth largest cathedral in the United States, largest church in New Jersey, its cornerstone was laid on June 11, 1899. The exterior was finished in 1919 but the complex and intricate work on its lovely interiors were not complete because of many delays until October of 1954.

A beautiful structure built in 1907 designed by the famous architect Cass Gilbert who designed New York’s Woolworth Building and US Custom House and Washington DC’s Supreme Court building is the Newark Historic Courthouse located at that triangle at Market Street, Springfield Avenue and Martin Luther King Jr Boulevard in Newark New Jersey. I walked by this building each week during my term as a grand juror and used to walk by it while an undergraduate in Newark in the 1980’s when it was for the most part abandoned and need of TLC. The design, a Renaissance style marble clad structure is one of the loveliest in New Jersey for sure and another of the renowned architect Cass Gilbert’s masterpieces. #developportdev @gothamtomato @developphotoweek @omsystem.cameras #excellent_america #iphone7 @bheventspace @bhphoto @adorama @tamracphoto @tiffencompany #usaprimeshot #tamractales @apple @mpbcom @kehcamera @cityofnewarknj @newjerseyisntboring @newjerseyisbeautiful
Downtown Newark back in 2014, the much maligned largest city in the state of New Jersey has struggled for decades, mired in a malaise that stemmed from the destructive and divisive Riots of 1967 and the city has never quite been the same. Other cities mired with urban blight have been able to reinvent themselves, Newark has struggled to do the same. There is much improvement when I last walked the streets this past June for a specialist appointment at University Hospital, but even that neighborhood doesn’t feel quite secure. I attended Rutgers University in Newark for the majority of my undergraduate studies in the 1980’s, walked the downtown area to eat when the food at Robeson Hall didn’t quite cut it, used public transportation during heavy snowfall. I shopped at L. Bamberger & Co Flagship store which was rebranded as were all Bamberger store as Macys which had been the parent company for years and Hanes Department Store on Broad Street. Newark has a very active and positive mayor and administration that is taking leaps and bounds to improve the image and situation of the city, it has been impressive, but much work still remains. These are a few of Newark’s tallest skyscrapers in this image, vestiges of an era when Newark was a mecca for insurance companies long gone. Only Prudential remains today as a large player in the area, actually sponsoring the sports arena. - [ ] #developportdev @gothamtomato @developphotoweek @omsystem.cameras #excellent_america #omsystem @bheventspace - [ ] #developportdev @gothamtomato @developphotonewsletter @omsystem.cameras #omsystem @bhphoto @adorama @tamracphoto @tiffencompany #usaprimeshot @newarkdowntowndistrict @newjerseyisntboring @newjerseyisbeautiful
The entrance to Newark Marina on the River Trent has this lovely blue bridge carrying the riverside footpath. Opposite the steps photo poster yesterday.
The very cold temperatures of March 2015 had an effect on the commencement of spring this year particularly in the Northeast United States. The cherry blossoms in Washington DC and here in Newark New Jersey all hit their peak blooms post the respective cherry blossom festivals in both places. I guess the blossoms were waiting for Earth Day.
In Newark, they really peaked this past week, the trees lining Branch Brook Lake in Branch Brook Park in Newark earlier this week with their blossoms in full bloom as can be seen in this image taken from the southern end of the lake. The image was captured with an Olympus E-5 with a 12-60mm F/2.8-4.0 Olympus Zuiko Digital Lens, manual exposure, raw file processed in Adobe Lightroom. Having written about this lake before, I recall while I was attending Rutgers University Newark College of Arts and Science in the 1980’s, the downtrodden Newark Park’s Branch Brook Lake had become a dumping ground for old automobiles. The good news is today as Essex County continues to work on the park after a $20,000,000 renovation, all the old car carcasses have been removed, the lake is stocked annually with fish and the grounds around the lake have been cleaned and are being maintained. There is a strong presence of Essex County Police in the park constantly so I have ridden bicycle around the park feeling relatively safe. The Newark Renaissance is slowing moving, Branch Brook Park and the downtown area are starting to show signs of hope, but violence and crime still are pervasive in New Jersey’s largest city so stay tuned.
The main house is perched high on the Cotswold scarp, can just be seen top right, and the summerhouse, overlooking the lake.
Two views of this pretty spot today.

The local services the GP plant near San Jose California with a single SSW GP60 for power, the crew was kind enough to give us a heads up for this move and letting us walk around for photos!
This Summer and Autumn, Newark has had these colourful benches all reflecting aspects of life in Newark and the town itself. This one is particularly colourful!
For some reason, these stairs at Newark Castle have been fenced off this summer, the first time at have seen this happen. It has allowed a few weeds to grow!
I stopped off at Newark Lock on the way back to the office to admire the reflections in the Wey

Newark House (on the left) overlooks the valley of the River Severn, part of the estate now owned by the National Trust.
Standing beside the eastern channel of the River Trent, is the 12th century Royal Castle of Newark on Trent, Nottinghamshire, UK. Newark stands in Central England where two of Britain's historic long distance roads (the Great North Road and Fosse Way) meet at an ancient and convenient river crossing.. This strategic position earned Newark the nickname the 'Key to the North'.
The castle and town were besieged more than once by Paliamentarian forces during the Civil Wars, after which the castle was deliberately ruined in 1648. "Bad" King John, the signatory of Magna Carta and legendary adversary of Robin Hood died here in 1216 whilst attempting to suppress a nationwide rebellion.
The castle dungeon and the kings bedroom are supposed to be haunted.
When we moved here to Newark nearly nine years ago, Cartergate, one of the main shopping streets was far, far busier. Since then it has suffered from financial troubles including the pandemic.
Now it is quite sparse for shoppers, particularly on a dull, cold and windy late afternoon. Many shops have failed with nobody prepared to take them over. Now lots of nail salons, ladies hair dressers, charity shops, betting and gaming places.
It is much easier to park in one of the two retail parks and do your shopping there with free parking or to go to one of the four major supermarkets, again with free parking. Parking in town is hindered by parking chargers, time allowed and by the constant threat of getting in ticket from the ever present parking wardens!
Incidentally, the overhead wires are part of the Christmas decorations and lights which will shortly be installed.
It's been a while since I did a sunset. After some time looking for a place to park then a public path to get here, we arrived just in time for the light show. It has been months since I last use my filters and it was a mess. Haha...

A beautiful mosaic called the Spirit of Jazz which is located at the Newark Pennsylvania Train Station in Newark New Jersey that calls back to the 1920’s era when music and Jazz in particular was a major form of musical expression across the nation. New Jersey’s largest city Newark became a cultural hotspot for the genre from the 1920’s through the 1950’s. The radio station WBGO “Jazz 88” studios are located in downtown New York City area’s only Jazz station. The Spirit of Jazz was a creation of artist Melvin Wallace Clark originally from Detroit Michigan who later in life migrated to New York to study art and completed this Public Art Commission at the end of the twentieth century of his major artistic subject, images of Jazz & Blues that convey energy, color and movement. . iPhone 7 #developportdev @gothamtomato @developphotonewsletter @omsystem.cameras #excellent_america #iphone7 @bheventspace @bhphoto @adorama @tamracphoto @tiffencompany #usaprimeshot #tamractales @kehcamera @mpbcom @apple @visitnewark @visit_nj @newjerseyisntboring @newjerseyisbeautiful #newjerseyisntboring #newjerseyisbeautiful @njtransit

LNER Class 800/1 arriving mid-morning at Newark Northgate from London to Edinburgh. The sun is low on the horizon in the southeast reflecting nicely on the train sides, which made me decide to do the image in monochrome / black and white.
Newark Pennsylvania Station or Newark Penn Station is situated within New Jersey’s largest city Newark on the western bank of the Passaic River. It was funded by the Pennsylvania Railroad (PRR) and the city of Newark designed by the prestigious New York City architectural firm of McKim, Mead and White, the station is a mixture of Art Deco and Neo-Classical with a price tag of 42 million dollars. When it opened in 1935, there were trains running to New York every 16 minutes, using the PRR tunnels, getting passengers directly to and from the heart of Manhattan faster and more efficiently than all their competitors. Still in use today as an intermodal hub for train, Newark Subway/Light Rail and NJT Bus services. One final shot from my early morning visit to the reservoir.
Perhaps the colors were overly saturated during processing. I thought it made the shot all the more appealing.
