It feels that early on in life we are set on a path, sometimes without even realizing it. We are asked, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” Unfortunately, the answer is always related to the job or profession that we want to have. The problem is that not only do we not fully understand what that profession entails and therefore often list off some ‘good’ jobs that we have heard of before, like a doctor, lawyer, or a professional athlete, we are also defining ourselves by the work that we will do.

Instead, shouldn’t the answer for what we want to be when we grow up be related to how we want to be the type of person who wants to make a positive impact on the lives of those around us, and in turn, our community as a whole.

And then later in life when we meet someone new one of the first questions we are asked is, “what do you do?” We are focusing on the wrong things in life if we define ourselves just by a job that we may have, one in which many may not feel is ultimately fulfilling.

The issue lies in the fact that we aim too low in life, we take the easy way out. We want to get paid right out of school so we take a job working for someone else, more than likely one in which we feel a sense of security. We all need to pay rent, pay the bills, but what are you sacrificing for that paycheck, what are you sacrificing for your freedom? One year may turn into five, and then ten, and you look back at the decisions that you made and how you ever got to this point.

We need to make sure that we don’t allow our lives to fly by without making that positive impact, without making a difference in the lives of others. But it’s not just about our day-to-day job, it’s about our aim in life, our driving force.

It is our responsibility to work towards a life where we can put the majority of our time into doing what we are most passionate about, not just what will make us the most money in the short term. What will lead to our ultimate fulfillment in life will be the crossroads where what we are most passionate about and how we can help others intersects.

What are you doing each day that provides value to people outside of your family? What are you doing to ensure that you set your aim on high?

The limit to what we can accomplish is only hindered by who we are working for, by how we define our self-worth.

I wonder what Michelangelo would have done with his life if he had set his aim low, if he had settled for a life just like everyone else. Would our world be the same if we did not have the Statue of David, The Last Judgment, or the Sistine Chapel ceiling to inspire us?

Let us not be at the end of our lives looking back thinking about what we could have created, how we could have inspired others. We can accomplish anything, we can inspire so many people when we don’t limit what we can do and who we are.

Setting our aim high is not just about what’s best for us, it’s about what’s best for the world around us.
