This is really long, so bear with me, and if you cannot bear with me then do not worry about it and just look at the pretty picture instead.

I read an article on how exam stress is good for learning today, written by the former head of a private school, and how exams are important because they show how much somebody has learnt and thus provide a good guide for universities as to a person’s abilities in studying. It said that the average teenage boy studying French GCSE has a vocabulary of around 100 words three months before the exams, but when it comes around to exam time his vocabulary increases to around 400 words, supposedly “all driven by fear of the exam”.

I have many issues with this, the first being that he is going to have a greater vocabulary after more time learning the language, so the closer he is to the exam, the more words he is going to know. Also, I remember there being more pressure closer to my German exam on random vocab words that could come up than when we were learning structure because it is pointless learning words like Sicherheitsgurt when you do not know how to use it. Thus, the closer he is to the exam, the more words are going to be taught to him, and the more words he is going to know because he has three months more of words now and he is going to spend more time learning them.

My second issue is that, okay, on the day of the exam, he knows 400 words, but what about two weeks after? What about two months after? What about two years after? My point is that unless he is constantly speaking French after the exam, at least as frequently as he was speaking/reading/writing before the exam, he is not going to remember all 400 words. Three months since my philosophy exam and I cannot remember the Kalam argument, and I know I could at the time because not only did I write two paragraphs on it in the exam, I taught it to the two other people taking the exam.

One of this teacher’s examples was a student wanting to study medicine – he said that you did not want a student who got an E in chemistry at GCSE to study medicine because this person would be useless as a doctor. Now, I do not have my results yet, but I do not think chemistry will be a high grade, if even a grade at all, and the plan was to go on to study medicine, so me of last year would be a good example. I understand chemistry perfectly. I know why electrons sit in the shells they do and why different elements have different coloured flames. However, my downfall is exams because I get confused as to the phrasing of the question. If I were able to have the question rephrased in a way that worked for the way I think, I might be able to get at least 80%. But because I cannot have that in an exam, I do not understand what is being asked of me, which then stresses me out and tends to upset me, leading to me giving up as I did in one of my chemistry exams. That does not mean that I do not know what I am talking about when discussing pH or titrations, it just means that it takes me longer to figure out what a badly worded question is asking of me and I am less confident in my abilities once they have been knocked. I could be top of the class, but I can guarantee that I will get one of the lowest grades in my class because exams, and particularly the stresses caused by exams, do not work for me.

I did my work experience in a Neuropathology lab, working under fairly stressful conditions, but this did not phase me because it was not the stress of ‘if I fail I will have no future and I will be a disappointment and everyone will think I am stupid’, it was the stress of knowing someone’s life was in the balance, and I did not struggle with that as much. I could cope with that stress by putting it to the back of my mind – I was constantly working, preparing slides, helping with cut-ups, actually doing things and I could ask for help, whereas with exams I am stuck in a silent room with only my own critical mind for company, trying to read questions that confused me more and more every time I read them.

Surely, if anything, this shows that whilst exams may work for some people, they can also be counter productive by breaking down morale and forcing young people to become less confident and more critical than society already forces us to be. For example, it was only the D in my AS chemistry last year (that did not even count for anything) that made me skip the whole Medical Degree chapter of education because I was fed up with the system and I did not think I could do it. One of the comments I used to get from all three of my teachers and my progress coach was that I had the ability, but that the exams last year knocked my confidence, and it was that that was holding me back. And I agree. I kept telling myself that I was not as good as everybody else, I stopped believing in myself, and I think that is the worst part of exams.

Known for Psychoanalysis

Sigmund Freud: 6 May 1856 – 23 September 1939) was an Austrian neurologist and the founder of psychoanalysis, a clinical method for treating psychopathology through dialogue between a patient and a psychoanalyst.

Freud was born to Galician Jewish parents in the Moravian town of Freiberg, in the Austrian Empire. He qualified as a doctor of medicine in 1881 at the University of Vienna. Upon completing his habilitation in 1885, he was appointed a docent in neuropathology and became an affiliated professor in 1902. Freud lived and worked in Vienna, having set up his clinical practice there in 1886. In 1938 Freud left Austria to escape the Nazis. He died in exile in the United Kingdom in 1939.

In creating psychoanalysis, Freud developed therapeutic techniques such as the use of free association and discovered transference, establishing its central role in the analytic process. Freud's redefinition of sexuality to include its infantile forms led him to formulate the Oedipus complex as the central tenet of psychoanalytical theory. His analysis of dreams as wish-fulfillments provided him with models for the clinical analysis of symptom formation and the underlying mechanisms of repression. On this basis Freud elaborated his theory of the unconscious and went on to develop a model of psychic structure comprising id, ego and super-ego. Freud postulated the existence of libido, a sexualised energy with which mental processes and structures are invested and which generates erotic attachments, and a death drive, the source of compulsive repetition, hate, aggression and neurotic guilt. In his later works, Freud developed a wide-ranging interpretation and critique of religion and culture.

Though in overall decline as a diagnostic and clinical practice, psychoanalysis remains influential within psychology, psychiatry, and psychotherapy, and across the humanities. It thus continues to generate extensive and highly contested debate with regard to its therapeutic efficacy, its scientific status, and whether it advances or is detrimental to the feminist cause. Nonetheless, Freud's work has suffused contemporary Western thought and popular culture. In the words of W. H. Auden's 1940 poetic tribute to Freud, he had created "a whole climate of opinion / under whom we conduct our different lives."
