Health benefits of vitamin B12
B12 plays a crucial role in the body's formation of red blood cells and neurological functioning. Therefore, it can boost overall health in a variety of ways and here are five of them:
1. Helps form red blood cells
Red blood cells carry oxygen from our lungs to tissues throughout our body. They also carry carbon dioxide — a toxic by-product of cell functioning — from those tissues back to the lungs where it's then expelled.
"Vitamin B12 participates in the production of red blood cells," says Vikram Tarugu, MD, a gastroenterologist and CEO of Detox of South Florida. "If the rates of vitamin B12 are too poor, red blood cell output is impaired, inducing megaloblastic anemia."
Megaloblastic anemia refers to anemia — a lack of red blood cells — specifically caused by lack of B12. It "causes symptoms like fatigue, difficulty concentrating, clumsiness, and dry skin," says Megan Wong, a registered dietitian at AlgaeCal, a company providing information on bone health.
While there are other reasons a person may develop anemia, such as excessive bleeding or low iron, maintaining healthy levels of vitamin B12 is one way to prevent it.
2. Might prevent dementia
Another benefit of vitamin B12 is that it can slow brain atrophy in the elderly. Brain atrophy means an overall shrinkage in brain volume and also a loss of neurons, which can cause diseases like Parkinson's and Alzheimer's making it difficult to function independently in society.

The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery
The National Hospital is now known as the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery. Sometimes referred to as Queen Square after its location, has been providing care for adults with neurological conditions for nearly 160 years, and is a leading clinical neuroscience centre. Newsweek Magazine has consistently voted the NHNN one of the top specialist hospitals in the world.
The hospital provides comprehensive services for the diagnosis, treatment and care of all conditions that affect the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nervous system and muscles.
State-of-the-art facilities include six operating theatres, an interventional MRI suite, a Gamma Knife, a specialist neuroscience critical care unit and a range of specialist diagnostic services.
-- Gamma Knife Surgery
Gamma Knife surgery is a brand name for a type of non-invasive radiation therapy that uses computer-guided planning in order to treat brain and upper spine conditions and tumors.
The Gamma Knife delivers beams of highly focused energy to a specific treatment area. This type of radiation minimizes harm to the surrounding tissue.
Despite its name, this procedure isn’t a surgery, and doesn’t involve any knives. Gamma Knife gets its name from the precision of gamma rays. These are high-energy photons (a particle of electromagnetic radiation). Gamma rays are as accurate as a surgical knife to specifically target an area of your brain without cutting into your body.
Holy Loch
Note the image of Holy Loch.
Holy Loch is a sea loch, part of the Firth of Clyde, in Argyll and Bute, Scotland.
The Holy Loch name is believed to date from the 6th. century, when Saint Munn landed there after leaving Ireland. Kilmun Parish Church is said to stand where Saint Munn's church was once located.
-- Alexander Robertson & Sons
Alexander Robertson started repairing boats in a small workshop at Sandbank in 1876, and his firm went on to become one of the foremost wooden boat builders on the Clyde.
Their golden years were in the early 20th. century when they started building classic 12 & 15 metre racing yachts. Robertsons was chosen to build the first 15-metre yacht designed by William Fife (Shimna, 1907).
More than 55 boats were built by Robertsons in preparation for the First World War, and the yard remained busy even during the Great Depression in the 1930's, as many wealthy businessmen developed a passion for yacht racing.
During World War II the yard was devoted to Admiralty work, producing a wide range of large high speed Fairmile Marine Motor Boats (MTB's and MGB's).
After the war the yard built the successful one-class Loch Longs and two 12-metre challengers for the America's Cup: Sceptre (1958) and Sovereign (1964).
During its 104-year history, Robertson's Yard built 500 boats, many of which are still sailing. The yard ceased trading in the early 1980's and was converted to residential building and the new Holy Loch Marina development.
-- Holy Loch in WWII
During World War II the loch was used by the Royal Navy as a submarine base, served by the depot ship HMS Forth. Near the Holy Loch an anti-submarine boom was constructed between Dunoon and the Cloch Point Lighthouse in order to defend the waters from German U-boats.
The loch was used extensively for trials and exercises by Royal Navy submarines during the war.
The submarines HMS Vandal (P64) and HMS Untamed (P58) were lost in the Clyde after being sunk following accidents during exercises. Untamed was later salvaged.
-- The American Presence at Holy Loch
Between 1961 and 1992, Holy Loch was the site of the United States Navy's Fleet Ballistic Missile Refit Site. It was the home base of Submarine Squadron (SUBRON) 14, US Atlantic Fleet.
Holy Loch's most prosperous period occurred with the naval base and its 3,000 Americans. A monument was built to the US Navy years in the Castle Gardens, Dunoon.
In 1992, the Holy Loch base was deemed unnecessary following the demise of the Soviet Union and subsequently closed.
Sir Winston Churchill
The card was clearly published during or soon after WWII because on the back is printed:
'There is still a lot to do.'
-- Winston Churchill.
At 3:00 p.m. on the 8th. May 1945, Winston Churchill announced Germany's unconditional surrender in a radio broadcast from London:
"Our gratitude to our splendid Allies goes forth
from all our hearts in this Island and throughout
the British Empire.
We may allow ourselves a brief period of rejoicing;
but let us not forget for a moment the toil and efforts
that lie ahead.
Japan, with all her treachery and greed, remains
unsubdued. The injury she has inflicted on Great
Britain, the United States, and other countries, and
her detestable cruelties, call for justice and retribution.
We must now devote all our strength and resources
to the completion of our task, both at home and
abroad."
Churchill continued the theme of 'It's not over yet' in a radio address which he gave to the British people 5 days later on Sunday the 13th. May 1945:
"There is still a lot to do ... Above all we must labour
that the world organization which the United Nations
are creating at San Francisco, does not become an
idle name ...
We must never forget that beyond all lurks Japan,
harassed and failing, but still a people of a hundred
millions, for whose warriors death has few terrors.
I cannot tell you tonight how much time or what
exertions will be required to compel them to make
amends for their odious treachery and cruelty.
We have received - like China so long undaunted -
we have received horrible injuries from them
ourselves, and we are bound by the ties of honor
and fraternal loyalty to the United States to fight this
great war at the other end of the world at their side
without flagging or failing."
A Massacre in Xuzhou
So what else happened on the day that the card was posted?
Well, on the 25th. June 1946. ten middle school students were killed and twenty wounded at Xuzhou (Hsuchow), in China's Jiangsu province, after Nationalist Army officer Feng Yu-xiang Fang Jingxing ordered them to be fired on by soldiers with machine guns.
The massacre followed an angry confrontation between the students and the officer.
Ian McDonald (Musician)
The 25th. June 1946 also marked the birth in Osterley, Middlesex of Ian McDonald.
Ian Richard McDonald was an English musician, composer and multi-instrumentalist, best known as a founding member of the progressive rock band King Crimson in 1968, as well as the hard rock band Foreigner in 1976.
McDonald began his music career as an army musician, where he learned the clarinet and taught himself music theory. He also taught himself to play the flute, saxophone, guitar and piano.
He co-founded King Crimson, and appeared on their 1969 debut album In the Court of the Crimson King, playing Mellotron, keyboards and woodwinds.
In the mid-1970's Ian moved to New York City where he co-founded Foreigner, appearing on the group's first three albums.
He later collaborated with Steve Hackett and played in the King Crimson spin-off group 21st. Century Schizoid Band. He was also a session musician, predominantly as a saxophonist.
-- The Death of Ian McDonald
Ian died of colon cancer at the age of 75 in NYC on the 9th. February 2022.
In 2024, McDonald was posthumously selected for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, as a member of Foreigner.

The neurological system is responsible for coordinating and controlling all bodily functions, including movement, sensation, and cognitive function. Maintaining neurological health is crucial for overall health and wellbeing. Here are some tips to help maintain neurological health:
Stay active: Regular physical exercise can help maintain healthy brain function by increasing blood flow to the brain and promoting the growth of new brain cells.
Eat a balanced diet: A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and healthy fats can help provide the nutrients necessary for healthy brain function.
Get enough sleep: Adequate sleep is essential for healthy brain function, as it allows the brain to rest and repair.
Manage stress: Chronic stress can have negative effects on the brain and nervous system. Practicing relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, and yoga can help reduce stress levels.
Engage in mentally stimulating activities: Activities such as reading, puzzles, and games can help keep the brain active and improve cognitive function.
Protect your head: Wear a helmet when participating in sports or riding a bike to protect against head injuries.
Avoid alcohol and drugs: Excessive alcohol consumption and drug use can have damaging effects on the brain and nervous system.
Stay socially engaged: Maintaining social connections can help reduce the risk of cognitive decline and improve overall brain function.
By following these tips, individuals can help maintain neurological health and reduce the risk of neurological conditions. However, it is important to consult a< a href="https://amandeephospital.org/specialities/neurology/"> neuro doctor for any neurological concerns or symptoms, as prompt diagnosis and treatment are critical for good health.
