This is a special friend of our named MacKenzie. She was recently diagnosed with transverse myelitis, which is a neurological disorder caused by inflammation across both sides of one level, or segment, of the spinal cord. The term myelitis refers to inflammation of the spinal cord; transverse simply describes the position of the inflammation, that is, across the width of the spinal cord. Attacks of inflammation can damage or destroy myelin, the fatty insulating substance that covers nerve cell fibers. This damage causes nervous system scars that interrupt communications between the nerves in the spinal cord and the rest of the body.
This condition has paralyzed MacKenzie from the waist down and it has confined her to a wheelchair. She experiences bladder and bowel dysfunction which involve increased frequency of the urge to urinate or have bowel movements, incontinence, difficulty voiding, the sensation of incomplete evacuation, and constipation, sharp shooting sensations through her chest, abdomen and legs, continual pain, muscle spasms and daily headaches.
Usually, people with transverse myelitis experience only one acute episode. However, complications often linger. Chronic pain is one of the most debilitating long-term complications. Others may include:
•Spasticity
•Partial or total paralysis
•Osteoporosis
•Sexual dysfunction
•Depression
MacKenzie is currently undergoing several different types of treatments and therapies in an attempt to help her recover. These pictures are a small snapshot of the 1st annual event held as a walk/run to help raise funds for costs associated with recovery that are not covered by insurance.
As you can see in the photographs, MacKenzie is a vibrant and beautiful little lady who brings joy and laughter to anyone she can. She is a fighter, and a wonderful example of seizing the day with unwaivering endurance.

It's your moment, I won't miss!
William Alexander Hammond (28 August 1828–5 January 1900) was an American military physician and neurologist. During the American Civil War he was the eleventh Surgeon General of the United States Army (1862–1864) and the founder of the Army Medical Museum (now the National Museum of Health and Medicine).
He was the first American physician to devote himself entirely to neurology, the author of the first American treatise about neurology, and one of the founders of the American Neurological Association.
Born in Annapolis. Maryland, Hammond grew up in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. He received his M.D. from New York University at the age of 20. After his internship and a few months in private practice he became assistant-surgeon in the American Army, serving from 1849 to 1860. He was first sent to New Mexico and took part in the Sioux Wars. While on sick leave, he visited military hospitals in Europe. With a common interest in poisons acting on the nervous system (among them snake venom), he wrote a paper with Silas Weir Mitchell that was published in 1859.
When the American Civil War broke out Hammond spent some time at the Baltimore infirmary then joined the army (without recognition of his past service) on 28 May 1861, a month a half after the beginning of the hostilities. Surgeon General Clement Finley soon transfered him to West Virginia under the command of General William Starke Rosecrans command "to lessen his visibility". There Hammond met Jonathan Letterman. Hammond worked with Letterman and Rosecrans on the design of a new ambulance wagon.
The atmosphere in the upper levels of medical services was then one of internal strife and personal conflicts. When Finley, the 10th Surgeon General, was fired after an argument with Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton, Abraham Lincoln, against Stanton's advice and the normal rules of promotion, named the 34-year-old Hammond to succeed him with the rank of brigadier general. Hammond became Surgeon General of the Army on 25 April 1862, less than a year after rejoining the army.
Hammond launched a number of reforms. He raised the requirements for admission into the Army Medical Corps. The number of hospitals was greatly increased and he paid close attention to aeration. He created Satterlee Hospital (which had up to 4,500 beds in hundreds of tents). Hospitals were ordered to maintain much more complete records. In Washington he founded the National Museum of Health and Medicine (then called Army Medical Museum) and put John H. Brinton in charge. Hammond proposed a permanent military medical corps, a permanent hospital for the military, and centralized issuance of medications. He recommended that "the service age of recruits be fixed by law at twenty years". He successfully transfered the responsibility for sanitary trains from private companies to the government and personally oversaw the building of the wagons. He promoted Letterman and supported his reforms on the front. On his initiative, Letterman's ambulance system was thoroughly tested before being extended to the whole Union. Mortality decreased significantly. Efficiency increased, as Hammond promoted people on the basis of competence, not rank or connections, and his initiatives were positive and timely.
On 4 May 1863 Hammond banned the mercury compound calomel from army supplies, as he believed it to be neither safe nor effective (he was later proved correct). He thought it dangerous to make an already debilitated patient vomit. A "Calomel Rebellion" ensued, as many of his colleagues had no alternative treatments and resented the move as an infringement on their liberty of practice. Hammond's arrogant nature did not help him solve the problem, and his relations with Secretary of War Stanton became strained. On 3 September 1863 he was sent on a protracted "inspection tour" to the South, which effectively removed him from office. Joseph Barnes, a friend of Stanton's and his personal physician, became acting Surgeon General. Hammond demanded to be either reinstated or court-martialed. A court-martial found him guilty of "irregularities" in the purchase of medical furniture (Stanton "used false data"). Hammond was dismissed on 18 August 1864.
With the help of friends Hammond established himself in New York City. He became professor of nervous and mental diseases at Bellevue Hospital in 1867 and at the New York University in 1874. He served on the faculty of the University of Vermont at Burlington and was co-founder and faculty member of the Post Graduate Medical School of New York. In 1870s, he limited his practice to possible cases of nervous or mental diseases, the first American physician to do so. He conducted early experiments on the use of lithium for the treatment of mania.

Neuro Interventional Procedures
Neuro intervention procedures are the minimally invasive treatments for health conditions affecting the head, neck, brain, and spine. Rather than opening the skull or exposing the spinal column, physicians can insert a catheter through a small hole (1-2mm) in the groin or wrist. Along blood vessels, this catheter is able to reach lesions. Combined with image-guided techniques, the most advanced devices like aspiration catheters, cerebral coils etc. will be used in treatment. The neuro intervention procedure provides more benefits than conventional surgeries, including minimal patient discomfort, less bleeding, and faster recovery.
Neurovascular Therapies
Ischemic stroke - Neurosurgery instruments for the mechanical thrombectomy with outstanding recanalization rate, including clot retriever device and aspiration catheter.
Hemorrhagic Stroke - Super soft Gekko™ neurovascular embolization coils and other neuro devices for hemorrhagic stroke treatment.
Access - Neuro catheters to assist neuro medical devices deployment and position.
ICAS - Intracranial PTA balloon catheter designed for balloon dilation of the stenosis of intracranial arteries to improve intracranial perfusion.

Sosina Mekonen, a 23-year-old psychiatric nurse.
In Mokonisa, a rural community in southern Ethiopia, many people believe that mental illness or neurological disorders are caused by spiritual beings and are contagious.
The coronavirus, and the subsequent measures from the government, made access to care impossible.
While providing medical assistance to the village, Sosina Mekonen educated the community about mental health and neurological disorders, debunking many myths. "In the beginning, everyone ignored me," Sosina recalls. "People refused to admit that there were mentally ill among them. They kept them hidden in their homes or locked up somewhere. Families isolated them because they mistakenly believed that these conditions could be transmitted."
Sosina was patient and kept repeating her story. “After many conversations, people started opening up. Not only relatives of patients with an existing condition, for example, who no longer had access to care, but also people who developed mental health problems due to the uncertainty of the pandemic, unemployment, lack of income and all its consequences. Men who were once busy but unable to work began to deal with anxiety and depression. As a result, violence against women also increased.”
This is how the ball started rolling and people now dare to express themselves during talks about mental health.

Ethiopia has been struggling with various crises for years. The East African country is being ravaged by a devastating locust infestation, flooding and, in some areas, persistent drought.
Also, the conflict in the northern Tigray region has been causing fear and insecurity for months.
Cordaid, together with other organisations within the Dutch Relief Alliance (DRA), provided emergency aid in Ethiopia in 2021. The DRA is a partnership of 14 Dutch aid organisations that supports people in the world's largest crisis areas with funding from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
By joining forces, the organisations can make a difference for people in emergency situations. In Ethiopia, Cordaid worked together with SOS Children's Villages, CARE, the Refugee Foundation and Tearfund.
In Ethiopia, the DRA organisations have handed out soap, water filters and hygiene kits; repaired and built new health centers; repaired and installed water facilities at clinics, schools and other public places; provided information about protection against corona; provided mental health care.
With these activities, the DRA has helped more than 276,000 people, through close collaboration with local organisations. The activities focused mainly on girls and women.
A neurological condition in which stimulation of one sensory or cognitive pathway leads to automatic, involuntary experiences in a second sensory or cognitive pathway, like tasting colors.
