Short snippet of my live-screenshared presentation to the Body of Knowledge conference in collaboration with Sean Miles and Bon Mott (in Melbourne) for an exciting and enriching #Sergina collaboration for the Body of Knowledge conference at Deakin University - here’s a section of my end, 4am in Brighton - filmed by Roux Malherbe, quoting - in order of appearance - Laboria Cuboniks, Ian McEwan, Donna Haraway, and Luce Irigaray.
Many thanks to CHASE DTP for allowing me to use the fare I would have used on a flight to pay artists to perform instead.

Viroid Flophouse was an exploration of playable art in an online environment incorporating movement, motion tracking, streaming and telematic performance within the common theme of "virus." The original idea was for remote sites to be able to ‘infect’ each other using digital telepresence. Partner sites at the Waag Society in Amsterdam and Arizona State University in Tempe, AZ, functioned as rooms in the ‘flophouse’ in which on-site participants could interact with remote participants in this hybrid game/performance environment. Motion data was sent over a network to each site in order to trigger game sequences. Performers/players on each side of the Atlantic used motion sensing to control a graphic environment in the other or remote space; the dancers in Arizona and Amsterdam had to position themselves in the same shared virtual space in order to get to the next level. In the bottom two rows of images, the image of the dancer is superimposed over the motion capture regions, creating a visual canvas triggered by the body.
A stunning, engrossing networked performance I saw at the Waag Society in Amsterdam two weeks ago. I loaded the central stream on my laptop while I was watching in the theater and took a bunch of screencaptures.
This telematic #IdentityMashup lab was conducted by Josephine Dorado and Phillip Gulley at La MaMa’s CultureHub in partnership with Seoul Institute of the Arts, as part of a networked ARTALK in which participants in NYC and Seoul, South Korea, connected and collaborated.
Participants in the #IdentityMashup lab created (dis)embodied stories based on Jung’s shadow archetype, and explored identity through a mashup of avatar roleplaying, livestreaming and performance in a mixed reality environment. Short stories based on shadow work were told through an avatar whose face was mapped to a live video stream of the participants’ actual faces, creating hybrid physical-online identities that were simultaneously distorted and revealing. Participants in NYC shared improvisational dance movements with participants in Seoul based on stories both groups had written and brought to life. funksoup.com/portfolio/idmashup/
RPM’s Remixed was a telematic, transdisciplinary performance based on remixing Alvin Lucier’s RPM’s score, integrating dance, video and sound improvisation. It was simultaneously performed in New York, Los Angeles, Tampa and Houston, and was subsequently, invited to perform as part of the ISEA Festival and ZeroOne San Jose. Dancers in Houston and Tampa improvised together while sound artists in New York and Los Angeles created instant compositions. Realtime processing of the video images was driven partially by the performers’ movements, further blurring the lines of authorship and contributing to the impromptu chemistry. funksoup.com/portfolio/rpms/
