Tel un Petit duc maculé, cette Chouette rayée a choisi cette cavité pour se reposer pendant la journée et faire un brin de toilette.
Just like an Eastern Screech Owl this Barred Owl chose this cavity for the day to rest and preen itself.

Comme tous les pics, le pic épeiche est spécialisé dans le martèlement des troncs et des branches d'arbre, car sa nourriture principale consiste en larves d'insectes xylophages. Il détache d'abord l'écorce à coups de bec latéraux, creuse ensuite des cavités dans le bois, jusqu'à 10 cm de profondeur, afin de dénicher les larves. En hiver, le pic épeiche consomme régulièrement les graines de pommes de pin. Il détache alors une pomme de pin puis la transporte dans son bec afin de la caler dans une fourche d'arbre ou dans une fissure du tronc. Lorsque la fissure n'est pas assez grande pour accueillir le cône, il l'élargit à coup de bec précis de manière à adapter le réceptacle à la taille du cône. L'oiseau cale le cône entre son ventre et le bois de sorte que son bec est libre pour nettoyer la cavité réceptacle. Le pic épeiche procède de la même manière avec les noix et les noisettes qu'il trouve.

Like all woodpeckers, the Great Spotted Woodpecker specializes in the pounding of tree trunks and branches, as its main food consists of xylophagous insect larvae. He first detaches the bark with lateral beaks, then digs cavities in the wood, up to 10 cm deep, to find the larvae. In winter, the Great Spotted Woodpecker regularly consumes pine cone seeds. He then detaches a pine cone and carries it in its beak to wedge it in a tree fork or in a crack of the trunk. When the crack is not large enough to accommodate the cone, he widens it with a precise peck to adapt the receptacle to the size of the cone. The bird holds the cone between its belly and the wood so that its beak is free to clean the receptacle cavity. The Spotted Woodpecker proceeds in the same way with the nuts and hazelnuts it finds.

Je n'avais jamais remarqué qu'ils avaient des jolies plumes bleues claires sur le haut de l'aile.
Celui-ci était occupé à nettoyer son plumage quand je l'ai vu sur ces branches sur le Lac de Sauvabelin.
I had never noticed that they had nice light blue feathers on the top of the wing.
He was busy cleaning his plumage when I saw him on these branches on Lac de Sauvabelin.

C'est tout simplement ce que j'ai réussi à faire de mieux aujourd'hui après une bombe météorologique hiers. Plus de 50 cm de neige mouillée et lourde avec des vent du nord de 80 kmh. Nous avons perdu l'électricité. Le téléphone cellulaire ainsi que l'internet... Je ne me souviens pas avoir vu autant de vent et de neige en si peu de temps... 15 heures d'enfer à pelleter et nettoyer l'entrée pour se rendre à la rue au cas où. À 67 ans, j'ai naturellement pris des poses pour nourrir mes oiseaux et faire quelques photos. Mais aujourd'hui le calme est relativement revenu sauf pour le vent et un peu de neige. Voici donc ma carte de souhait pour le Temps des Fêtes, un peu tardive, mais quand même, prise aujourd'hui à basse lumière...

Simply Happy Holidays
This is simply the best I managed to do today after a weather bomb yesterday. More than 19 inch's of wet and heavy snow with north winds of 50 mph and more. We lost electricity, cell phone as well as the internet... I can't remember seeing so much wind and snow in such a short time... 15 hours from hell shovelling and cleaning the entrance to get to the street in case of. At 67 years old, I naturally took poses to feed my birds and take some pictures. But today the calm has returned relatively, except for the wind and a little snow. Here is my wish card for the Holidays, a little late, but still, taken today in low light...
La Corneille noire est omnivore, et surtout bien connue pour sa façon de « nettoyer » la nature. Son régime comprend des carcasses, des petits vertébrés, les œufs et les nouveau-nés des oiseaux, des insectes, des mollusques, des amphibiens, ainsi que quelques matières végétales et du grain pendant l'hiver.
La nourriture diffère en fonction de l'habitat. Elle se nourrit principalement sur le sol où elle cherche des invertébrés au milieu des herbes ou des pierres.

Au sol, c’est un oiseau qui marche très rapidement en hochant la queue. La bergeronnette grise est la plus téméraire de sa famille et elle se laisse approcher avant de s’envoler d’un vol ondulant pour aller se poser seulement quelques mètres plus loin. Ce faisant, elle lancera immanquablement un ou plusieurs cris d’alarme caractéristiques et perçant : “tssic”.
A la fin de l’été et durant l’hiver, des rassemblement de plusieurs dizaines d’individus peuvent être observés. Et même des centaines notamment dans le Sud de la France.
Enfin, pour peu qu’on prenne le temps de l’observer et que l’oiseau ne se sente pas particulièrement menacé, on remarque que le bergeronnette grise passe énormément de temps à se nettoyer en passant son bec dans ses plumes.

La statue d'Hitchcock dominant la Plage de l'Ecluse rend hommage au Festival du Film Anglais organisé à Dinard chaque année (hors covid...). Elle sert manifestement de perchoir/latrine aux goëlands du coin et, comme le Festival n'a lieu qu'en automne, la municipalité prend tout son temps pour la nettoyer!
Les corbeaux sur les épaules du Maître du suspense renvoient manifestement au film "Les Oiseaux". C'est pour le moins surprenant car, si Alfred est bien d'origine anglaise, "The Birds" est un thriller américain filmé à Bodega Bay en Californie....

The statue of Hitchcock overlooking the "Plage de l'Ecluse"
pays tribute to the English Film Festival held in Dinard each year (covid time periods excepted ...). It is apparently used as a perch/latrine for the local gulls and, since the Festival is only held in the fall, the municipality takes all the time to clean it up!
The crows on the shoulders of the Master of Suspense clearly refer to the film "The Birds". This is surprising because, if Alfred is of English origin, "The Birds" is an American thriller filmed in Bodega Bay in California....

Baringo lake is one of the big lakes of the kenyan Rift Valley. As the rainy season is coming (no need of a wall...) people are burning the small cultivated island. A way they told me to clean the soils and help water to permeate easier.
Le lac Baringo est l'un des grands lacs de la Rift Vallée kényane. La saison des pluies s'étant annoncée, la fertile petite île du lac est brûlée afin de nettoyer le sol des broussailles et le rendre plus perméable.
Grandcamp-Maisy (France) - Il y a quelque chose de dérisoire à voir cet homme tenter de nettoyer l’avant-port au karcher. C’est la version normande et contemporaine du « tonneau des Danaïdes ». On se demande quelle faute à été commise par ce pauvre employé du port pour se voir infliger un tel supplice ?
Plus sérieusement, la composition de cette photo n’a pas été aisée. D’abord parce qu’il faisait assez sombre et que le reflet du calvaire était plongé dans l’ombre (a photo a été légèrement éclaircie). Il fallait surtout ne pas le couper. Et en même temps (comme dirait Macron), je devais surveiller la ligne d’horizon pour qu’elle reste bien parallèle. Malgré cette précaution, la photo a un petit air penché. Ce déplaisant effet d’optique, est dû à la digue en pierre qui n’est pas parallèle à la mer. Elle a été construite en biais.

Grandcamp-Maisy (France) - There is something derisory in seeing this man trying to clean the outer harbor with a karcher. It is the Norman and contemporary version of the "tonneau des Danaïdes". One wonders what fault was committed by this poor port employee to be inflicted with such torture?
Jokes aside, the composition of this photo was not easy. First because it was quite dark and the reflection of the Calvary was plunged into shadow (the photo has been lightened slightly). It was especially important not to cut it. And at the same time, I had to watch the horizon line to keep it parallel. Despite this precaution, the photo has a slight leaning air. It is an unpleasant optical effect, due to the stone dyke which is not parallel to the sea. It was built at an angle.

This clock was given to me a long time ago by my mother. She said it came from her great-grandaunt who worked as a housekeeper in a wealthy bourgeois family. When she retired they offered her this clock as a reward for her devotion.
There used to be a glass globe to protect it but I broke it when trying to clean it, unfortunately. Which provoqued a very angry reaction on the part of my mother who said that generations of women had cleaned it without breaking it.
My mother has always been very good at reinforcing my self-confidence. :-)
Cette horloge me vient de l'arrière grande-tante de ma mère. Elle travaillait comme gouvernante dans une riche famille bourgeoise qui lui offrit cette horloge pour son départ en retraite. il y avait un globe de verre autour pour la protéger mais je l'ai cassé en voulant le nettoyer, ce qui a provoqué la colère de ma mère qui m'avait donné l'horloge. Elle m'a fait remarqué que des générations de femmes avaient nettoyé ce globe avant moi sans le casser. Elle a toujours su trouver les mots pour renforcer ma confiance en moi. :-)

Situé à côté du petit village de pêcheurs du Magouër, dans la commune de Plouhinec, le cimetière de bateaux du nom du village se trouve sur la rive droite de la Ria d’Etel. Le site où sont visibles trois épaves de thoniers était passé à deux doigts de disparaître il y a quelques années.
En 2006, la commune avait envisagé de nettoyer le site, alors que certains s’inquiétaient de la sécurité, des coques instables, ou encore des débris. « Une association s’était créée, et une quinzaine de personnes s’est regroupée devant les vieux navires quand les bulldozers sont arrivés, et ils ont dû faire demi-tour »

Amritsar (Inde) - L’une des particularités du sikhisme est que toute personne présente dans l’enceinte du temple d’Or, qui en fait la demande, est nourrie gratuitement et reçoit une paillasse pour dormir. De nombreux pèlerins peu fortunés, quelle que soit leur religion, bénéficient de cette solidarité. Le repas est constitué d’un bol de riz. Les femmes sur la photo, toute bénévoles, sont chargées de nettoyer les bols qui ont servi aux repas. Afin de ne pas gâcher l’eau, la vaisselle en inox est nettoyée avec de la cendre pour ses propriétés abrasives.

In order not to waste water, the stainless steel dishes are cleaned with ash because of its abrasive properties.

Le canard Colvert passe plusieurs heures par jour à nettoyer ses plumes ! À l’aide de son bec où de sa tête , il lisse ses plumes d’un enduit huileux et cireux sécrété par la glande uropygienne située à la base de la queue ! / Mallards spend several hours cleaning its feathers ! Using its beak or head , it smoothes its feathers with an oily and waxy coating secreted by the uropygial gland at the base of the tail !

"Downs at Folkestone" 1984
I went along to this location knowing roughly what I wanted to capture. The overlap of these conical hills ( hillocks?) .. called the 'North Downs' somewhat confusingly ! It was an evening shot & underexposed to give this low-key effect. Taken on Ilford XP1 film and using a Canon AE1 and 70-210mm lens ( I think ! ) The composition I thought about carefully and I am happy with the result and the balance between light and dark areas. There was an evening mist forming and in the distance ( where the Channel Tunnel loading station is now ) there are spots and streaks of light from roads & vehicles etc. The negative was very difficult to print and even the scanned version here is full of dust and water marks, so I spent a long time trying to clean it up !

Je me suis rendu à cet endroit en sachant à peu près ce que je voulais photographier. Le chevauchement de ces collines coniques (« hillocks » ?) ... appelées « North Downs », ce qui prête un peu à confusion ! Il s'agissait d'une photo prise le soir et sous-exposée pour donner cet effet discret. Prise sur un film Ilford XP1 avec un Canon AE1 et un objectif 70-210mm ( je crois ! ) La composition a été mûrement réfléchie et je suis satisfait du résultat et de l'équilibre entre les zones claires et les zones sombres. Il y avait une brume nocturne qui se formait et au loin (là où se trouve maintenant la station de chargement du tunnel sous la Manche) il y a des taches et des traînées de lumière provenant des routes et des véhicules, etc. Le négatif était très difficile à imprimer et même la version scannée ici est pleine de poussière et de traces d'eau, j'ai donc passé beaucoup de temps à essayer de le nettoyer !
When I saw this little yellow heap on the leaf, without my glasses on, I thought it was some bird poo :)) When I tried to brush it off with my hand, it MOVED !!! That's how I discovered that it was simply a Spider nursery, with lots of baby spiders in it :) /
Lorsque j'ai vu ce petit tas jaune sur une feuille de mon Seringat, j'ai pense qu'il s'agissait d'un caca d'oiseau (je ne portais pas mes lunettes). Quand j'ai essaye de nettoyer la feuille d'un revers de main, le petit tas s'est mis a BOUGER !!! Et c'est ainsi que j'ai decouvert qu'il s'agissait d'une garderie pour bebes araignees :)

L’homme s’appelle Shalim Baba. Il est le chef élu de la communauté. L’équipe soignante d’Action Bénarès vient de lui nettoyer ses plaies. Ici, il se fait aider par sa petite fille pour enfiler une chaussette afin d’éviter de salir le pansement neuf. La petite ONG médicale intervient une fois par semaine dans la léproserie.

The Kashi leper colony
Varanasi (India) - This photo was taken in the Kashi leper colony which serves as shelter for around forty families.
The man is called Shalim Baba. He is the elected leader of the community. The Action Bénarès healthcare team has just treated his wounds. Here, he gets help from his granddaughter to put on a sock to avoid getting the new dressing dirty. The small medical NGO intervenes once a week in the leper colony.

Conditions dantesques hier le long du littoral Atlantique.
Porspoder et le mythique phare du four dans le Finistère n'a pas été épargnée et ce fût un spectacle magnifique .
Dés 8 heures du matin à l'abris derrière les rochers, essaye de se protéger du mieux possible pour éviter les très fortes rafales (153 km/heure relevées) , les embruns qui maculent la lentille frontale à nettoyer très très régulièrement !
De nombreux copains photographes croisés, bien désolé de n'avoir pu passer plus de temps avec vous mais nous avions tous de belles images à faire :-)

With the proximity of the metropolis of Abidjan, the proliferation of plastic waste on the beaches and in the water was impressive. Recently, measures have been taken to clean the beaches by recycling certain plastic items, such as bottles.
Avec la proximité de la métropole d'Abidjan, la prolifération de déchets en plastique sur les plages tout comme dans l'eau était impressionnante. Récemment, des dispositions ont été prises pour nettoyer les plages en recyclant certains objets en plastique à l'exemple des bouteilles.
