Malaria, dengue and Japanese encephalitis are problems in this area, but we like to think of the netting as atmospheric rather than life saving.
BIRD NETTING
Bird netting is the strongest and most versatile bird exclusion system in the world.
Bird netting consists of high density polyethylene twine that is twisted and knotted to form a strong impenetrable bird barrier to pest birds. The coloring and U.V. treatment are embedded in the composition, making the bird net more resistant to the effects of the sun with a more consistent coloring throughout.

I love mosquito netting on a bed. It makes me feel all Indiana Jones and stuff. Not that we've really had any issues with mosquitoes, much to my surprise - not to mention my great joy and happiness!
Yes, that is a thatched roof. We had a lovely balcony that looked out onto the ocean as well - splendid spot to watch the sun rise.
