Es una tarde ventosa en Jaramillo, el pueblo de la provincia de Santa Cruz donde funciona una de las escuelas más jóvenes del país. La Polimodal Nº 31 abrió sus puertas en marzo de 2010. Meses después se convirtió en una de las primeras beneficiarias del Programa Conectar Igualdad.
Antes, los estudiantes de Jaramillo y de Fitz Roy viajaban 90 kilómetros hasta Caleta Olivia para cursar el secundario. Hoy el 70 por ciento de los alumnos que asisten al Polimodal Nº31 de esta localidad de algo más de 200 habitantes proviene de la vecina Fitz Roy. Una combi de la comuna los busca y los regresa de sus hogares a la escuela de Jaramillo. Pisar estas tierras frías -la temperatura media anual es de 6 grados-, es caminar también por un escenario histórico: el de los sucesos que hacen a La Patagonia Rebelde, a las ejecuciones y asesinatos a los huelguistas. En la Biblioteca Comunal de Jaramillo, esta tarde César, docente de Literatura, nos habla de otras batallas. Las del signo de los tiempos.
“A mí me ofrecés diez computadoras y yo te voy a decir ‘no, regalame un libro’. Me encanta el olor a nuevo de las páginas. No sé por qué. Me apasiona”. César reconoce lo difícil que resulta enseñar Literatura hoy: “A los profesores cada vez se nos hace más difícil. Es una lucha heroica por el libro. Nosotros peleamos por la lectura. Ahora que nos llega la computadora, tenemos la oportunidad de que los estudiantes accedan a un material diverso mucho más rápido, y también más fácil”.
César se sincera: para él no fue fácil aceptar la idea de trabajar con las netbooks en el aula. Pero resalta que en todo ese proceso resultó fundamental la ayuda de su hija de diez años, una “nativa digital” como él mismo la describe. “No es mi mundo, no es mi elección. Muchas veces pasa que mi hija está sentada con su compu y yo estoy con un libro. Y por ahí, lo cierro, y me pongo a pensar y me digo ‘Qué raro, ¿no? ¡Qué mundos contradictorios pueden convivir al mismo tiempo!’. Ella con su computadora que anda, vuela, hace mil cosas, y yo al lado sentado en otro planeta. Pero podemos convivir. Es lo que trato de implementar en el aula”.
César enumera sus convicciones. “El libro en papel no va a desaparecer, estoy convencido de eso. Como decía Umberto Eco: ‘El libro es como la cuchara, el cuchillo y el tenedor’. El serrucho. ¿Cuántos elementos aparecieron después del serrucho para cortar? Muchísimos. ¿Cuántos elementos aparecieron después de la cuchara?, muchísimos. Bueno ¿Desapareció el cuchillo, desapareció la cuchara? No. Con el libro, igual. Aparecerán otras formas de libros pero el libro no va a desaparecer”. César reconoce que el mismo sistema educativo está implementando computadoras, así que ni se le ocurriría decir algo así como que todo el mundo compre libros y cierre las computadoras. “Los estudiantes se adecuan a la escuela, pero yo me tengo que adecuar a lo que traen ellos. Y ellos traen el manejo de la computadora en sus manos. No podemos estar alejados de eso”, dice. Afuera cae la noche patagónica y adentro lucha por la lectura cuenta con nuevos y poderosos aliados.

Processed this using my new netbook/notebook/laptop toy as a test to see how it would perform, it worked like a charm (Acer 1410, 11.6" screen, Window 7 home premium 64 bit) not much of an image but it worked as a test:

With some encouraging from my parents I decided to get a netbook for my three week trip in Peru and Ecuador. As an avid blogger and photographer it would be difficult to limit myself to the occasional internet cafe during the trip. On my trip through Cambodia, Vietnam, and Bali I packed my Toshiba Satellite. But this trip i'll just use one bag and want to stay as compact and lightweight as possible.
As you can see, this thing is tiny. I'm writing this post on my cell phone so a small keyboard isn't a problem. It's small enough that i'll have space for a drink on the tray table of airplanes - impossible with my giant laptop.
It is light too. There isn't a cd or dvd drive - but i'm not planning on watching movies on this trip. It has an 8.9" screen, 1 GB ram, a 160 gig hard drive, a card reader suitable for my camera, wireless, webcam, and runs on XP. It came with a thin slip case to protect it from scratches. Even the power block is small - a worry that I had. In fact, the power cords add only 11 ounces of weight. I might be able to get that down if I can find a shorter cord that goes from the wall to the power brick.
I'll be looking for a tiny usb mouse to use with it but if I don't find something it isn't a big deal - I can use the touch pad and just be a little slower. The smaller keys slow me down in my typing a little.
I can eliminate my cell phone charger and instead charge my phone using the usb port of the netbook but that only saves me one ounce. But it would allow me to sync my phone if I get that software installed in the next 3 days.
Ugh. Three days. Better get cracking!
Olha como meu Tutu já cresceu!!! Tudo bem que meu netbook é minúsculo, mas ele quase dobrou de tamanho! Ele é mto preguiçosinho! Adora dormir. E adivinha onde ele gosta de tirar as sonecas dele?!?!? Em qualquer lugar que não seja a caminha dele. Se for quentinho e tecnológico então... Os escolhidos quase sempre são meu netbook, o home theater, o PS3 e a lateral da TV. Ele num tá fofinho, gente???

A busy library means that students have to be inventive and find a place to work. This student found a space in a fiction section bookshelf that fit his netbook perfectly. I think he’s started a trend, as his buddy soon joined him.
