This @pepsi "spectacular" was created in 1936 by the Artkraft Strauss Sign Corp for the Pepsi-Cola bottling plant that was located on this waterfront area of ‪#‎Queens‬. The plant was demolished and high-rise residential towers took its place in 2004 but luckily the ‪#‎neonsign‬ survived and was reinstalled slightly to the north of its original location. This amazing ‪#‎neon‬ ‪#‎sign‬ sadly is not landmarked but we hope it continues to survive. ‪#‎neongeeks‬ ‪#‎signgeeks‬ ‪#‎ig_signage‬ ‪#‎americana‬ ‪#‎instaamerica_americana‬ ‪#‎ipulledoverforthis‬ ‪#‎trb_ipoft_signs‬ ‪#‎queenscapes‬ ‪#‎SignCollective‬ ‪#‎ig_great_shots_nyc‬ ‪#‎ignyc‬ ‪#‎WHPpatterns‬ ‪#‎newyork_instagram‬ ‪#‎InstagramNYC‬ ‪#‎myfeatureshoot‬ ‪#‎newyork_ig‬

A great place to get some delicacies for Chanukah is Russ & Daughters Appetizers on East Houston Street in the Lower East Side, which has been in business since 1914. It is now being run by fourth-generation owners Joshua Russ Tupper and Niki Russ Federman. The appetizing #store is known for their smoked #salmon and their vast #caviar selection. The business was founded by Joel Russ out of a pushcart before he opened a #storefront. There were more than four hundred appetizing stores in the city in 1936. This is the last one remaining on the Lower East Side. We particularly love their #vintage #neonsign flanked by the two #neon fish 🐟 as well as their #lox! #signgeeks #signs #neongeeks #signage #ig_signage #everything_signage #signcollective #guardiancities #myfeatureshoot #WHPcometogether #tv_retrotype #lowereastside #typevstime #fontastic

After a 22-year run at the Ed Sullivan Theater the ‪#‎Lateshow‬ ends tonight. The ‪#‎theater‬ was built by Arthur Hammerstein and opened its doors on November 30, 1927. After the depression devastated Broadway, CBS converted the theater into a ‪#‎television‬ studio in 1935. It broadcast The ‪#‎Beatles‬ first U.S. performance on "The Ed Sullivan Show" on February 9, 1964. On December 10, 1967 the studio was renamed The Ed Sullivan Theater in honor of the 20th anniversary of the ‪#‎show‬. The original Papaya King location on the Upper East Side was founded in 1932 by Constantine Poulos. Constantine "Gus" Poulos created Papaya King after falling in love with a papaya drink while on vacation in Cuba. The Poulos family operated the business for 68 years before it was sold to investors but the Original location on 86th and 3rd Avenue is still open (although it was remodeled in 2010. We loved this ‪#‎neon‬ ‪#‎signage‬ which was a replica of the original location's ‪#‎neonsign‬ which was installed in the 1960s.A night version and full interview appears in our book NEW YORK NIGHTS. ‪#‎storefront‬ ‪#‎disappearingfaceofnewyork‬ ‪#‎signgeeks‬ ‪#‎neongeeks‬ ‪#‎papaya‬ ‪#‎hotdog‬ ‪#‎type‬ ‪#‎typography‬

Lenny's #Pizzeria was founded in 1953 and has been run by Frank Giordano and his family since 1983. Lenny’s Pizza became famous after it was used in a scene for the movie where the character played by John Travolta is seen ordering two slices of #pizza from Lenny’s, and eating them “double-decker” style, one piled on top of the other 🍕🍕. We love their #vintage #neon #sign and their pizza is great too! Olympia Diner was manufactured by the Jerry O'Mahony Diner Company of New Jersey, which manufactured 2,000 metal pre-fab diner structures from 1917 to 1941. It is the longest stainless steel diner in the country. The current owners, the Gavrilis family have been there since 1974. Parkside Lounge in the Lower East Side has been in business since 1956. Before it was a ‪#‎bar‬ it operates as an icehouse. @denoswonderwheelpark The ‪#‎wonderwheel‬ was erected in 1920 and stands 150 feet high and holds 144 people at once. Its unusual design for a ‪#‎ferriswheel‬ incorporates sections of curved tracks connecting an outer wheel and a smaller inner wheel, with 16 swinging cars which roll back and forth between the two wheels. There are also 8 stationary cars. All of the cars give riders panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean. #July4th, Nathan's Famous in Coney Island will hold its annual #hotdog eating contest. This iconic #frankfurter store opened 100 years ago as a small 5-foot long counter selling #hotdogs for a nickel. Nathan and Ida Handwerker, #Polish immigrants, started the business insisting on selling quality specially spiced franks which came in natural casings and freshly fried potatoes. This weekend, this original location will sell an estimated 26,000 hot dogs! Photo and full text on the history of this #storefront appear in our book "New York Nights". This ‪#‎diner‬ had a great ‪#‎vintage‬ ‪#‎neonsign‬ on its roof but it was recently replaced by an LED lit plastic version. We are not sure why it was replaced but imagine it has somethings to do with the high cost of maintaining a ‪#‎neon‬ ‪#‎sign‬ in New York City, where it is exposed to all types of weather including blizzards and heavy rain, which typically "shorts out" a letter or two. We loved its ‪#‎script‬ and block ‪#‎lettering‬ in both blue and red colors. Photo from 2010 appears in our book "New York Nights".

Pitkin Grocery Store in East New York, Brooklyn is no longer in business. We loved this neighborhood #bodega with its worn facade and #handpainted #signage. Bodegas like this are often the only place locals can buy groceries because their neighborhood lacks big grocery stores. Dublin House is a family-owned #Irish #pub which has been in business since 1921. It was founded by John Carway, an Irish immigrant from Dublin who rented the space during Prohibition. We absolutely love its #vintage #neonsign in the shape of a #harp and its letters that say "TAP ROOM" and "BAR" which blink on and off. Carbone is an Italian-American restaurant on Thompson Street in Greenwich Village, which opened in 2013. Chefs Mario Carbone and Rich Torrisi took over the space where Rocco Ristorante operated for close to 90 years. The third-generation owner Anthony DaSilva told us when we interviewed him for our book "New York Nights", that he"lost the space because his landlord raised his rent from $8,000 a month to $18,000 a month." Although we are sad to see Rocco closed after so many years of serving #Italian food in the Village we are happy that the original #neonsign was repurposed for Carbone instead of being thrown away like many other #neon signs which have disappeared from NYC. #vintagesign #vintage #neongeeks #pasta #signgeeks #disappearingfaceofnewyork #trb_ipoft_signs #food #ipulledoverforthis

Pearl Diner in lower Manhattan has been in business since the 1950s. This gorgeous overhanging ‪#‎neonsign‬ is original and still manages to look great even when all of the ‪#‎letters‬ are not lit. The menu is typical ‪#‎diner‬ fare, including ‪#‎burgers‬, ‪#‎milkshake‬ and ‪#‎pancakes‬ but they also serve ‪#‎Greek‬ specialties as the owner is Greek. The diner is highly unusual in that it is located in its own single story building amidst the huge ‪#‎skyscrapers‬ of the financial district. We love their ‪#‎food‬ and their 50s style booths. We got word that the original ‪#‎vintage‬ ‪#‎neonsign‬ has been removed by the owner, Al Collazo, who has owned the store since 1984. Once an old-school ‪#‎pharmacy‬ complete with soda fountain counter, it operates as a ‪#‎diner‬ with a separate ‪#‎drug‬ store adjacent to it.
