My entry for this week's Macro Mondays theme of "Perfect Match": a needle and thread.

These two photos were taken at the same place, a little less than an hour apart. For the second photo, the sun had come out and you can see the pine needles.

A Needle in the Haystack is a nice saying for something extremely well hidden and virtually impossible to be found. Have you ever tried to find a Needle in the Badlands?

These are one kind of needle I actually like! These spire shaped mountains in South Dakota shoot straight up towards the sky and are quite impressive to see. They were definitely more of a challenge to photograph than I expected because they are nearly vertical and I when you are close to them they can appear distorted. Nonetheless, it was still a fun experience as my wife and I found tons of fresh raspberries on the trail which was an added treat to the beautiful scenery in front of us! God is truly so good to us!

For 'Macro Mondays' theme of 'Needle and Thread'.

Went into the basket that contains all sorts of bits and pieces that I think might be useful for a photograph, but invariable are not. However, there was a sparkling piece of ribbon that had been used to wrap a present. Of course, it was far too wide to go through an eye except one for a Giant's needle!

Out came the scissors and I cut a thin strip which I threaded through this darning needle - that was fun because the strip began to unravel, most went through but not all.

The needle was stuck in a polystyrene block to hold it steady and lit with a couple of lights, nothing special. To add a little colour I waved a piece of red ribbon in the background.

I use this glass darning needle to weave in the yarn tails at the end of a knitting project. This task is my least favorite part of knitting, so I decided to make it more enjoyable with a beautiful darning needle. It is handmade, of glass!

Went to the Space Needle with my family from out of state. After having a few drinks, I'm surprised this turned out as well as it did!

Pinnacles on the skyline reach out to streaming cirrus in the Needles District of Canyonlands National Park. This group of pinnacles forms the northern border of Chesler Park- a small part of the trail leading into the park is visible in the lower right corner.

The Needles are made of Cedar Mesa Sandstone, the product of a large dune field that formed at the edge of a shallow ocean that stretched toward the west around 200 million years ago. The red bands are from sediments that washed out of mountains to the east.

The clouds mark the advance of a polar jet that was making its way into the Great Basin. Windy days make for great skies in this area.

This is another photo of the Iao Needle, a famous landmark in Maui, Hawaii. It is a vegetation-covered lava remnant rising 370 m (1,200 feet) from the Iao Valley floor. The "needle" itself is an illusion, and is in reality a sharp ridge that gives the appearance of being a spire when viewed end-on. The needle is an extension of and surrounded by the cliffs of the West Maui Mountains, an extinct volcano.

one of the possibilities that i didn't use for the theme of safety at macromondays for 12/17.. maybe this is for sewing on a mesh? counted cross stitch? have no clue why i have it ~grin~

The needle, Apeldoorn

De Naald (English: The Needle) is an obelisk-shaped monument at the side of the Zwolseweg road in the Dutch city of Apeldoorn, near Het Loo Palace. It is built of stone and surrounded by a low iron fence.

The monument was an idea of the Mayor of Apeldoorn, H.P.J. Tutein Nolthenius. The project was funded through a collection campaign under the residents of Apeldoorn. The monument was intended to be a gift from the people of Apeldoorn to Queen Wilhelmina and her fiancé Prince Hendrik on the occasion of their marriage. Formally it was dedicated to Queen Wilhelmina's mother Queen Emma the Queen Regent and her late husband King William III.

When Queen Wilhelmina and Prince Hendrik were married on 7 February 1901, the needle was not yet ready. It was dedicated just over a month later on 9 March 1901.

On April 30, 2009, a driver who attempted to attack the Dutch Royal Family, leaving eight dead and injuring nine, drove into the monument at high speed. The fence and some of the low stone bollards around the monument were heavily damaged.

The only native evergreens in this part of Alaska are white spruce and black spruce. So the patterns made by the needles on the non-native evergreen specimen trees at the Georgeson Botanical Gardens are a novelty to me and I love the way they look.

Haven't picked up a camera in two weeks... I'm glad I shot 4 rolls in my last photo excursion or I would have nothing to post...

On the plus side, Getty Images have selected some of my photos for their Flickr Collection. Does that mean they are good or just 'commercially viable'?

Hope you're all well :)

Needle ice is a needle-shaped column of ice formed by groundwater. Needle ice forms when the temperature of the soil is above 0 °C (32 °F) and the surface temperature of the air is below 0 °C (32 °F). Liquid water underground rises to the surface by capillary action, and then freezes and contributes to a growing needle-like ice column. The process usually occurs at night when the air temperature reaches its minimum.

The ice needles are typically a few centimetres long. While growing, they may lift or push away small soil particles. On sloped surfaces, needle ice may be a factor contributing to soil creep.

The last part really is a bit unstable, but the view is quite rewarding.

Nature's needles, sewing pins and moss for a pincushion.

I think Seattle can boast that it has the world’s biggest Christmas tree. Alright, it’s not a “tree” per se, but there is a tree made of lights on top of Seattle’s famed Space Needle. The thought of having to hang them makes me very queasy so I try not to think about it.

The Space Needle stands 605 feet tall and weighs 3,700 tons. As you might imagine, the unique structure required some creative construction techniques, including bending three 90-foot, 90,000-pound I-beams to form each leg. The Needle was built to withstand earthquakes and winds up to 200 miles per hour; in such high winds, the structure itself sways up to 1 inch per 10 mph. Three capsule elevators take you up the Needle’s legs to the Observation Deck, which is 520 feet above the ground. During the 43-second elevator ride, you will get a view through three sides and a brief introduction to the structure.
