A male Green Thorntail Hummingbird extracts nectar. This wide ranging hummingbird is small and will frequent feeders. There are many of these shimmering green hummingbirds at Rancho Naturalista, Costa Rica.

I am pretty sure this is a female ruby-throated hummingbird. I have had 6 around lately. I am taking advantage of the time they have left before they fly south for the winter. It would be fascinating to know where this one chooses to spend the winter. I love listening to them chatter to each other.

I captured this extreme closeup of a honey bee on the Ligularia in the front yard. It looks like the bee is having to contend with a large structural component of the flower - like a fallen beam - in its quest to get some nectar. I like the little grains of pollen and the compound eye of the bee.

The sunbirds are a group of small Old World passerine birds which feed largely on nectar, although they will also take insects, especially when feeding young. Flight is fast and direct on their short wings.

Small Tortoiseshell : Aglais urticae

I captured this image a few seasons ago during an afternoon visit to the farm fields in the Texas Hill Country. From the moment we stepped foot onto the farm property, we encountered a variety of butterflies. Monarchs, Queens, Fritillaries, and multiple species of swallowtails — including the beautiful one in this picture, a Pipevine Swallowtail (Battus philenor) — to name a few. This zinnia flower field was particularly bustling with all kinds of pollinator activity. It was amazing to observe. But the flashes of bright metallic blue on the underwings and abdomens of these swallowtails were especially mesmerizing. I patiently waited for one of these blue beauties to sweep down to a red zinnia and after a few chances I was able to successfully capture an image with some rich primary color harmony just as I had envisioned. ❤️💙

Collecting nectar

While enjoying nectar from a tassel flower (her compensation), this female wasp is in the perfect position for the male wasp to move in and mate with her (his compensation) which, by the way, he was successful at after a few attempts of her fighting him off!
