I needed to take some pictures so I could go get new knobs. I recently decided it was long overdue for me to start playing again so I've been busy getting this guitar back in shape. (That is part of the reason for my hiatus from flickr) I added F-spaced DiMarzio Air Norton and Super Distortion pickups. I also got a full Mockingbird electronics kit from the Moser Custom Shop (Neal Moser designed this guitar and the famous electronics.) to replace the sub-par and no longer working Mock electronics it came with. Hardware and electronics are the usual corners cut on imports. I replaced the Kahler Flyer with a Kahler Pro soon after I got this guitar back in the late '80's. This guitar was made in 1984 so it's a real NJ. NJ isn't New Jersey as was commonly believed back then. It's Nagoya Japan. As a teenager I couldn't afford a US handmade so this was as good as it got. I now have a Jackson USA Select KE2 Kelly on order so I'll have my two dream guitars even if neither is custom built and only one comes from the USA. I'll change my tune if I win the World Series of Poker some day:)

An image of finally's

Finally my icon shows one of my own guitars. Finally I have this guitar. I've wanted this guitar since 1985. That's when I saw Chris Hager of Rough Cutt playing the guitar I had been waiting for. Something like a Gibson Explorer with an attitude and that famous Jackson neck. Of course Chris was playing what is now called a King Kelly cutout. Kelly's were custom shop only for years and I could only dream about them (custom shop = $$$$). During my hiatus from guitar Jackson started the USA Select Series. USA Select guitars are made in small batches with standard options in the custom shop. You get Jackson custom shop quality for about half the price of a true custom, one-of-a-kind guitar. Even during the years when I couldn't play I dreamed of this guitar. I ordered it in Oct. 2007. It took 7 1/2 months to get here. I'm happy to say it plays like a dream.

I still dream about ordering a custom King Kelly made of mahogany and a high grade quilted maple top. I'd probably try to keep the shape, but get a little more room for upper fret access. I have some ideas on that just not the money for a master built CS one-off;-)

The highlights:

Alder body, neck-thru-body quatersawn hard rock maple neck, compound radius ebony fingerboard, 24 jumbo frets, mother of pearl sharkfins and logo, bound fingerboard and headstock, 25.5" scale, original Floyd Rose, Acapulco Gold finish.

You'll see in the coming photos Acapulco Gold is a cool finish. Based on the angle of view it is many shades of gold, green, grey, and a bit of blue. I'll post a video or two to really show the color flipping at some point.
