CSX's splendid new "Honoring Our First Responders" locomotive looks good under the lights as it poses with NS's First Responders unit at the Barber Junction depot during a night photo session at the NCTM. Kudos to the CSX workers at Huntington on yet another excellent job.

The sunset shines on the side of the N&W 611 as she sits under steam at the North Carolina Trasnportation Museum. Once night fell, everyone's cameras would be clicking away for the night shoot, so it was nice to take a moment and get a sunset shot that not many others got. It was also nice to see her under steam one last time in 2019. Who knows what, if any, plans will be had for her next year.

With its first load of passengers for the day, the NCTM's beautiful ACL E3 runs by the front of the museum grounds with a non-homogenous mix of passenger cars behind it. The E3 does not come out much so I was glad to get the opportunity to photograph it.

Lionel682, aka me, takes a stint with the coal scoop while firing up the 611 at a Fireup Event at NCTM. Fascinating experience for those who enjoy trians but have never worked for a railroad. One of my uncles was both a fireman and later an engineer. And, apologies for stealing a line from Chattanooga Choo Choo.

A sight straight out of the 1950s, A 1940 Graham automobile waits for a passing train with a modern streamlined steam engine to pass by. In reality, it’s 2021 and thanks to NCTM/VMT and a generous car owner, scenes like this are still possible decades later.

Rain clouds are rolling out at sunset as the crew sends their power to the roundhouse. NCTM's FP7, Southern 6133, goes for a spin on the turntable in the day's last light. A twist on the typical pan shot, this was a long exposure done while following the turntable as it was in motion. It took a few tries to get it right, but manages to capture the motion of the world around the still locomotive.

Classic Southern - The Southern still serves the South at the NCTM. Southern GP30 2601 is seen passing under a classic Southern signal bridge as it powers the museum excursion train.

SOUTHERN SERVES THE SOUTH!

SOUTHERN GIVES A GREEN LIGHT TO INNOVATIONS!

By now, many of you have heard the Southern heritage unit was involved in a derailment near Pittsburgh, PA a few days ago . The most important thing is that the crew is ok and get to go home to their loved ones. Currently, the fate of 8099 in unknown but here's hoping that NS returns her to the way she looked in this shot back in 2012 at the former Spencer Shops in NC.

With the colorful Crepe Myrtle trees in bloom, Southern Railway GP30 #2601 leads the NCTM train around the property on a quiet Sunday afternoon.

One of the many shots from one of the NCTM Photo shoots. Sure did love the smell of that coal smoke most of the day. Sunshine and steam, too good. Click on the photo if you want to see a screen full of beautiful steam engine.

In 1939, the Atlantic Coast Line ordered two E3 models, numbered 500 and 501, for service on The Champion between NYC and Miami, Florida. The 501 remained in service until 1970, operating over 6 million miles. This distinction made the 501 the most traveled E unit in US history. Norfolk and Western Class J 4-8-4 number 611 has a short photo freight in tow on the grounds of the North Carolina Transportation Museum located in the former Southern Railway Spencer Shop complex. Here she is marching beneath a preserved and relocated former Southern Railway signal bridge.

Built by the Norfolk and Western in house at their East End Shops she was in the last of three batches of the class built totalling fourteen units. Entering revenue service on May 29, 1950 she had a short nine year revenue service career before being retired and donated to the city of Roanoke and placed on display in a park. In 1963 the Roanoke Transportation Museum was created around 611 as its centerpiece. The museum's original location was destroyed by a flood in 1985 and subsequently moved downtown and was renamed the Virginia Museum of Transportation. Restored by NS for their original steam program she would have her first excursion career spanning from September 1982 until December 1984 when she would be retired again for another two decade slumber.

In 2012 the city officially donated her to the museum and a year later the Fireup611! campaign began with a goal of raising $3.5 million for her second resoration. With NS contributing $1.5 million to the project she was moved here to NCTM only one year prior to this photo where her restoration began.

On May 9th less than a year after restoration began she made her first test run under her own power and on this day she finally performed in her first public appearance. Two days after I took this image she would triumphantly steam home to Roanoke over her old home rails unassisted with NS CEO Wick Moorman at the throttle as the culmination and conclusion of NS 21st Century Steam program. She led multiple mainline excursions the rest of 2015 and the next two years though in recent times she has been relegated to only operating on museum grounds here and on the Strasburg's 4 1/2 mile route that she has visited twice now for extended periods.

Spencer, North Carolina

The NCTM's resident Southern E8A in Crescent livery makes a few test runs around the property as shop forces work out some bugs. Couldn't ask for a more beautiful day to grab a few shots of this classic as it makes a rare appearance outside of the roundhouse.

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas...everywhere you go

A seemingly rare sunny day in the Piedmont region of North Carolina finds NCTM's freshly repainted N&W GP9 teaming up with Norfolk Southern's First Responders GP38-2 to shuttle passengers around the historic Southern Railway property. Upon arrival at Spencer after retirement from NS, the 620 was repainted into to N&W's tuscan red passenger scheme in which it would stay until late 2018, when shop forces gave it a much needed dip into its original black freight livery.
