Portugal

Nazaré beach, with its mild climate and natural beauty, has already stolen my heart years ago.

The long sandy half-moon shaped beach, which is also the town’s sea front, is known for its grandeur and for the brightly-coloured awnings that decorate the sandy beaches, contrasting with the blue of the water and the sky.

The Nazaré Canyon is an underwater canyon, which, as its name suggests, is located near Nazaré, on the coast of Portugal. It is the largest in Europe, with an extension of 230 km and a depth of 5000 meters.

The depth of the Nazaré Canyon and its relative proximity to the coast causes very high waves. This makes Nazaré one of the best places to surf. The canyon creates constructive interference between incoming waves so it tends to make the waves much larger than normal.

On October 29, 2020, German surfer Sebastian Steudtner surfed a wave of 26.21 meters, being recognized in 2022 by Guinness World Records as the world record for the highest wave surfed.
