Bled is known for the glacial Lake Bled, which makes it a major tourist attraction. Perched on a rock overlooking the lake is the iconic Bled Castle. The town is also known in Slovenia for its vanilla-and-cream pastry called kremna rezina or kremšnita.

Naturopath Arnold Rikli (1823–1906) from Switzerland contributed significantly to the development of Bled as a health resort in the 2nd half of the 19th century. Due to its mild climate, Bled has been visited by aristocratic guests from all across the world. Today it is an important convention centre and tourist resort, offering a wide range of sport activities (golf, fishing, horseback-riding) and is a starting point for mountain treks and hikes especially within the nearby Triglav National Park.

A small island in the middle of the lake is home to the Assumption of Mary Pilgrimage Church; visitors frequently ring its bell for good luck. Human traces from prehistory have been found on the island. Before the church was built, there was a temple consecrated to Živa, the Slavic goddess of love and fertility. One can get to the island on a traditional wooden row barge called Pletna. The island on Lake Bled has 99 steps. A local tradition at weddings is for the husband to carry his new bride up these steps, during which the bride must remain silent.

Bled Castle (Slovene: Blejski grad) is a castle built on top of a 130 meter cliff overlooking lake Bled, located in Bled, Slovenia. It is one of the most visited tourist attractions in Slovenia, second only to Postojna Cave.

The castle was first mentioned in 1004, which makes it one of the oldest in Slovenia. The oldest part of the castle is the romanesque tower. In the Middle Ages more towers were built and the fortifications were improved. Other buildings were constructed in the Baroque period. The buildings are arranged around two courtyards, which are connected with a staircase. There is a chapel on the upper courtyard, which was built in the 16th century, and renovated around 1700, when it was also painted with illusionist frescoes. The castle also has a drawbridge over a moat.

What is Pulsed Electromagnetic Field (PEMF) Therapy?

Pulsed electromagnetic field therapy is a non-invasive cancer therapy that is increasing the length and quality of life in patients with stage 1 to stage 4 cancer. PEMF therapy brings health benefits to treated patients by enhancing the patient’s prognosis and increasing effectiveness of conventional cancer treatments, such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy and reducing drug dosage. Pulsed electromagnetic therapy is an approved therapy for brain cancer in the US. Many other cancers have been shown to be effectively treated by PEMF as well. PEMF as well also treats many symptoms experienced by cancer patients, including pain and swelling (lymphedema). We have treated many cancer patients using high gauss Health Canada approved PEMF devices at our cancer clinic with great success.

Pulsed electromagnetic field devices provide both magnetic and electrical stimulation that is pulsed onto the affected area of the human body for several minutes. The duration and intensity of PEMF therapy are individualized on a case-to-case basis. Our clinic uses high powered PEMF units that are able to deliver very strong pulsed electrical fields so treatment time is at a minimum.

How Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy Works

Pulsed electromagnetic fields induce multiple mechanisms within the affected area of the body that work to eliminate cancer cells either individually or in conjunction with conventional cancer therapies.

The side of the body closest to the pulsed electromagnetic field device will get the highest amount of nerve stimulation and magnetic exposure because the intensity of the field decreases as it moves through tissue.

How Has Pulsed Electromagnetic Therapy Been Tested?

Numerous studies using pulsed electromagnetic field therapy on human cancers have provided promising results which led to human therapy development. The findings regarding PEMF therapy use on human cancers are noted:

Magnetic fields enhance chemotherapy effectiveness

Colon and breast cancer tumour growth is inhibited

Inhibited lung metastasis in breast cancer

PEMF influences free radicals, which influence cancer

No harm to normal cells is found

Tumour metastasis is reduced

Ability to affect advanced and early tumours

Early death of breast cancer cells results from increased mitochondrial activity

Reduced blood flow to tumours, which is the nutrient source for growing tumours

Increases some cancer cells susceptibility to radiation and chemotherapy agents

In a study of 151 cancer patients with either stomach, lung, or breast cancer, lymphoma or melanoma, medium-intensity PEMFs were used on the patient’s whole body. Fifty-two patients received PEMF therapy preoperatively and 50 of them reported pain relief and improved appetite with no adverse side effects.

Forty-seven patients received PEMF therapy days after surgery which was noted to provide pain relief and decrease weakness. Lymphedema, the buildup of lymph fluid in tissue, was seen in the arm of 19 patients post mastectomy. Compression therapy combined with PEMF therapy completely eradicated lymphedema. PEMF therapy helped improve recovery in 31 patients with stomach cancer. These patients had reduced stomach acid, improved white blood cell count and immune function. Followup with these patients saw that only two had metastases post-operatively. The study was able to show that whole-body PEMF therapy has a positive effect on cancers in patients pre- and post-operatively.

Pulsed Electromagnetic Therapy and Specific Types of Cancer

Cancer is a leading cause of death in Canada with few being treatable past stage 2. PEMF therapy and other advanced natural therapies, alongside the expertise of naturopathic doctors who focus on cancer therapy, is working to change that statistic. PEMF therapy is best used in conjunction with other cancer therapies as a safe and beneficial method to rid cancerous growths and reduce negative consequences of chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery.

Breast Cancer

A study on 73 women with breast cancer (stage 1 to 3) provides results that show PEMF therapy, used in combination with conventional therapy, can improve outcomes. The study concludes that the use of PEMF therapy in conjunction with radiation before tumour removal helps maintain cellular immunity, lymphocyte count and hormone production.

Surgery causes oxidative stress to the body, but PEMFs were able to reduce the damage. Women were followed-up post-surgery and those without PEMF therapy had appearances of metastases; however, in the group with PEMF therapy, only 8 per cent of women saw metastases. PEMFs did not have adverse side effects in patients.

Another study analyzed the use of PEMFs for 60 minutes per day on 20 women with stage 1 or 3 breast cancer. Tumour samples were extracted during surgery. Results revealed cancerous cell death and stunted tumour development.

A group of women with stage 3 breast cancer were given medium-intensity PEMF therapy before radiation. X-ray machines were used after treatment to identify alterations in the tumour and lymph nodes in the area. It was found that the PEMF-treated patients had better tumour arrest than those without PEMFs. Just over 40 per cent of the PEMF-treated patients had total tumour regression and almost half had partial tumour regression. Post-surgery biopsies also found greater tumour damage in PEMF-treated patients than those without PEMF therapy.

A common problem after a mastectomy is improper lymph drainage which can delay recuperation for the patient. When PEMF was used, drainage time decreased from 13 days to only eight. PEMF wellness devices are beneficial for the patient’s recovery and allow them to be discharged from the hospital sooner so they can continue to heal in the comfort of their own home.

Liver Cancer

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is an advanced liver cancer that has limited treatment options. Due to impaired liver function, many people with HCC cannot endure intrahepatic treatment or chemotherapy. Evidence has shown that low-frequency pulsed electromagnetic fields alter the growth of liver cancer cells and is well tolerated by patients and no side effects were seen.

Lung Cancer

Research from study including 20 patients with lung cancer who were treated before surgery using PEMF therapy showed that lung tumour tissue was more responsive to cancer treatment via desirable changes to lung cancer cells, showing PEMF has an anti-tumour effect on lung cancer tissue. Results were noticeable in patients after about 25 sessions. Adenocarcinomas, a fairly aggressive cancer that makes up 40% of all lung cancers, reacted most sensitively to PEMF therapy.

Oropharyngeal (Head and Neck) Cancers

Radiation and surgery are the mainstays of head and neck cancers and can be disfiguring and cause disabilities. Help for these side-effects can be helped with the use of PEMF. In small studies, PEMF devices were shown to promote better tongue mobility, speech improvements, chronic pain relief and a softer tongue consistency in patients with squamous cell cancer of the tongue. PEMF therapy was given to patients for seven weeks before surgery which resulted in surgery needing to be less invasive. Biopsies of the tissue could not identify any tumour cells after PEMF therapy was provided. After these successful encounters, 11 more patients were treated with PEMF before radiation and chemotherapy. PEMFs were found to increase tolerance to these conventional treatments and minimized skin and mucous membrane alterations.

Treatment and operations for cancer of the larynx are typically followed by inflammation of the larynx and trachea. PEMF therapy was shown to reduce inflammation in 65 per cent of patients in the study and reduce swelling induced by radiation.

Ovarian Cancer

Five patients with stage 4 ovarian cancer received PEMF therapy 20 minutes per day for two weeks alongside chemotherapy. PEMFs were successful in reducing instances of nausea, loss of appetite and weakness which are common side effects of chemotherapy without interfering with chemo.

Stomach Cancer

A study involving 18 patients with precancerous tissue and peptic ulcers were given whole-body PEMFs for 15 sessions at 20 minutes each. Post-treatment evaluation revealed a pain relief effect and found 14 patients had full ulcer healing while only four individuals had no change. PEMFs increase the number of T-lymphocytes that help reduce inflammation. This immunomodulating effect is beneficial to patients with stomach cancer while they receive conventional cancer treatments. Extended PEMF treatment could show widespread changes in pathologies.

Stage 4 Cancer

Advanced cancer, such as stage 4 cancer, could benefit from PEMF therapy as it has the capability of extending the life of patients without negative side effects. High-intensity or high-gauss PEMF devices would need to be used for this purpose.

Some advanced cancers cannot be treated with conventional therapies such as chemotherapy and radiation. In one study, a total of 74 patients had various stage 4 cancer and were treated with PEMFs for one hour, three times per day. Followup included X-ray machines, MRI, CT, and quality-of-life evaluation. No clear tumour response was seen in any of the patients, however, severe chronic pain from tumour growth was relieved via PEMFs and reported quality of life increased.

High-intensity PEMF therapy (400mT) was used in 137 patients for two hours per day for an average of 40 days. Sixty per cent of the advanced cancer patients benefited from the therapy and their lives, in many cases, were prolonged.

Metastatic Cancer to the Brain

Here, PEMF therapy was paired with radiotherapy to study its effect on metastatic cancer to the brain considered inoperable. In this study, radiation every 48 hours was followed with 12 hours of PEMF exposure. Thirteen patients who experienced this combination treatment were followed-up by evaluation of the metastasis. Eight patients had partial remission and two patients had complete remission of their cancer. No negative side effects were noted. The study shows how PEMF therapy can be used after radiation to improve desired outcomes of metastatic remission in the brain.

PEMF Therapy Decreases Chemotherapy Complications

Patients commonly report complications from chemotherapy. PEMF is useful for reducing the amount of time it takes to heal after chemotherapy. PEMF can mitigate the local injury that results from an intravenous chemotherapy injection, such as inflammation, clot formation, and hardened veins.

Breast cancer cells were exposed to both PEMFs and various chemotherapy agents. This exposure caused additional decreases in cancerous mitochondrial activity compared to chemotherapy alone. With decreased mitochondrial activity, cancer cells are unable to carry out functions related to growth and metastases.

PEMF Therapy Decreases Radiation Complications

The use of PEMF therapy prior to radiation can increase cancer cell sensitivity to the conventional treatment. Amazingly, PEMFs do not subject the surrounding normal cells to radiation damage and may preserve regular function of surrounding tissue.

An example of successful PEMF therapy prior to radiation is seen in patients with cancer of the larynx. Moderate-intensity PEMFs were used on and around the larynx which effectively reduced inflammation and edema of the larynx. Complications after radiation included laryngitis and damage to the cartilage in the area; PEMF therapy was able to show clinical improvement in 65 per cent of the patients with these complications.

After radiation, PEMF use may support normal cell recovery with reduced damage.

PEMF Therapy Mitigates Pre- and Post-Surgery Complications

Bone pain relief can become hard to achieve for patients as a tumour presses against the bone before it is able to be removed. Nerve pain and neuropathy is common as a result of chemotherapy. Soft tissue pain is harder to identify and occurs via damage to ligaments, fascia, tendons, and muscles. PEMF therapy can provide pain relief in patients with cancerous tumours, improve chemo-induced neuropathy and maintain cellular muscle function.

Tumor removal from bone leaves the bone with defects that are exacerbated by chemotherapy. PEMF therapy can decrease the amount of bone healing time from nine months to 6.7 months.

Plastic surgeons have used PEMF therapy to decrease bruising and inflammation after surgery and assist in a speedy recovery by improving circulation to the damaged area.

PEMF therapy, as is used at our clinic, helps cancer patients in many ways. If you wish to book a session, please call our front desk at (204) 775-4539.

The aim of Clinical Naturopathy is to detail key treatment protocols

and “evidence-based” complementary medicine interventions for

use in naturopathic practice. The book is written by leading practitioners in the field, exploring naturopathic treatments (herbal, nutritional, dietary, lifestyle) for a range of medical conditions that are commonly encountered in modern practice. The unique perspective of the book is that it combines clinical experience with evidence-based substantiation from rigorous research.

Case study examples at the end of chapters manifest the author’s clinical knowledge, contextualising theory into relevant clinical application.

The book is a landmark guide to naturopathic practice.

Clinical Naturopathy initially outlines an introduction to Case Taking

Methodology, as well as Diagnostic Techniques used by naturopaths,

and then details treatment protocols and prescriptions to treat major health conditions within individual body systems. Special sections on naturopathic treatment at various stages of the life cycle (paediatrics, pregnancy, aging), and complex health conditions (e.g. HIV, Cancer, pain management), are also covered. Comprehensive appendices provide additional clinically important material, including reference levels for laboratory medical tests, nutrient food values, traditional Chinese medical diagnosis, and drug-CAM and chemotherapeutic

and drug-CAM interaction tables.

This text will be essential reading for courses preparing 3rd and 4th year (or post graduate level) naturopathic students for practical application of their skills in a clinical setting, in addition to advancing their knowledge of evidence-based complementary medicine interventions. The book will also enhance the knowledge of clinical naturopathy of Allied Health and medical practitioners.

“As part of continued unemployment benefit conditions, Frank was required to undergo vocational training or actively seek employment. In order to support himself through his chosen reflexology massage diploma, he hatched upon a plan that utilized his vast experience watching downloaded episodic medical dramas.

The premise of his show was simple; the execution was where it got interesting for the audience. Prior to the warm-up act “Doctor Innoculator” would appear dramatically from behind the curtain with a beaker of unmentionably disgusting effluent, quaff it to calls of “scull, scull, scull”, take a bow and exit in time for the tap-dancing. During Act 1, “The Doc” would introduce, explain and demonstrate his signs and symptoms, as they emerged, often in what many an audience member would say was way too much detail. This was followed by a brief intermission, where the audience broke for complimentary sultana cake and cold coffee whilst Frank wrapped himself in a space blanket to allow the mounting infections to fast-track.

Act 2 would open with calming classical music to accompany increasingly frantic and desperate attempts to diagnose his condition and treat the symptoms using a variety of naturopathic, homeopathic and aroma therapy tinctures, ointments, potions, dilutions, essences, balms, salves and powders. According to the programme, Act 3 was allocated to question time, but more often than not resulted in an ambulance ride, often unconscious, to the emergency ward for a stomach pump and round of antibiotics.

Frank had to abandon his act as it was increasingly difficult to find a venue with compulsory third party insurance packages he could afford that included adequate emergency medical cover. His firm grip and boyish good looks, however, ensured he was in high demand in foot fetishist circles for his invigorating appointments and happy endings.” - biography by wonko

Lovely white flowers ( I think are Gymnema Sylvestre) photographed in pair on Chaturshringi Hills in Pune-India.

From Wikipedia:

Gymnema sylvestre R.Br. is a herb native to the tropical forests of southern and central India where it has been used as a naturopathic treatment for diabetes for nearly two millennium.

Sanskrit Name : Meshasringi, Madhinasini or madhoolika,

Marathi: मेष शिंगी, लोखंडी, Hindi: Gurmar, Tamil and Malayalam are Sirukurinchaan(சிறுகுரிஞ்சான்), Amudhapushpam, Chakkarakkolli.

The Hindi word Gur-mar (Madhunaashini in Sanskrit, Chakkarakolli in Tamil), literally means sugar destroyer. Meshasringa (Sanskrit) translates as "ram's horn", a name given to the plant from the shape of its fruits. Gymnema probably derives from the Latin word meaning naked and sylvestre means from the forest.

Biography:

Joseph H. Pilates was born in Düsseldorf Germany, in 1880, to parents of Greek and German ancestry. His father was a prize-winning gymnast of Greek origin and his mother a naturopath of German origin.[1] His name was originally spelled by its Greek derivation "Pilatu" but was changed to Pilates. This caused him much grief because, as a child, older boys taunted him calling him "Pontius Pilate, killer of Christ". A sickly child who suffered from asthma, rickets and rheumatic fever, he dedicated his entire life to becoming physically stronger. Joe began studying body building and gymnastics and by the age of 14 was fit enough to pose for anatomical charts. He came to believe that our modern life-style, bad posture, and inefficient breathing were the roots of poor health and ultimately devised a series of exercises, training techniques and engineered all the equipment, specifications and tuning required to teach them properly.

In 1912 he moved to England earning a living as a boxer, circus performer and self-defense trainer. During World War I he was interned with other German citizens in a camp in Lancaster where he trained other inmates in fitness and exercises. It was here that the beginnings of the true Pilates Method began to take shape.

After the War, Pilates emigrated to the United States. On the ship to America he met his future wife Clara. The couple founded a studio in New York City and directly taught and supervised their students well into the 1960’s. Pilates and his method, which he and Clara originally called "Contrology", refers to the way his method encourages the use of the mind to control the muscles. This method focuses on the core postural muscles that help keep the body balanced and are essential to providing support for the spine. In particular, Pilates exercises teach awareness of breath and alignment of the spine, and strengthen the deep torso muscles, which are important to help alleviate and prevent back pain. Together they soon established a devout following in the local dance and the performing arts community. Well known dancers such as George Balanchine and Martha Graham became devotees and regularly sent their students to them for training and rehabilitation. Pilates practiced what he preached and lived a long healthy life. He died in 1967 at the age of 87.

He also wrote several books including "Return to Life through Contrology" and "Your Health". Joe and Clara had a number of disciples who continued to teach variations of his method or in some cases focused exclusively on preserving the method and instructor training techniques they learned during their studies with Joe and Clara.

The unique training regimen Joe and Clara devised has now proven itself for more than 80 years as an effective and safe method of exercise, when taught and applied by a qualified instructor who understands how to develop and tailor a "Contrology" workout specific to your body and capabilities.

A couple weeks ago I got stung by a bee and had severe systematic swelling and hives. I did not have any swelling in my throat or tongue but I did spend a few quality hours in the emergency room in the scenic coastal town of Tillamook, OR. Yeah, where they make the cheese :)

The IV injection of prednesone and antihistamines along with an oral course of prednesone took the swelling away and got me back on my feet. It did not, however, address any underlying issues with my immune system so I made an appointment with a naturopath. This is the lunch I took that day :)

We talked and she is having me get a blood panel done and keep a food diary and all of that good stuff. She also recommended I start a regular regime of cod liver oil (already doing it!) and quercitin with bromelain, an herbal supplement that is supposed to normalize histamine production. I'll see her again later this month for more follow up.

I'm an outdoorsy kinda girl and having to be careful and/or scared about going outside is not my idea of fun. I hate having mixed feelings about the bees visiting my garden, or about walking across a field to harvest blackberries or about going off on a hike by myself with my dog. Hopefully we can get my immune system normalized and have some hope that the next time I get stung will not be a life threatening event.

Bad posture can cause many problems. The majority of problems we see come from bad habits such as slouching in couches. More info, visit:

Well-coiffed and well-dressed American actress Barbara Britton (1920-1980) co-starred opposite some of Hollywood's most durable leading men, including Randolph Scott, Joel McCrea, Gene Autry, Jeff Chandler and John Hodiak. Later, she became known as TV's Revlon Girl.

Barbara Britton was born Barbara Maureen Brantingham in 1920 in Long Beach, California. Attending Polytechnic High School, Barbara eventually taught Sunday school and majored in speech at Long Beach City College. She intended to become a speech and drama teacher, but she decided, against the wishes of her ultra-conservative parents, to pursue the local stage. As a Pasadena Tournament of Roses parade representative of Long Beach, she was seen on the front pages of the newspaper, scouted out and signed by Paramount agents. The surname Britton was a cherished family name, and Barbara picked it as her stage name when Paramount complained that Brantingham was "too long to fit on a marquee." She made her film debut with Secret of the Wastelands (1941), a Hopalong Cassidy Western, and continued in bit parts for a time before finding modest but showier roles in such films as Louisiana Purchase (1941), Zij die wij vereren (1943) and Till We Meet Again (1944). Gary Brumburgh ast IMDb: "She eventually earned higher visibility as a lead and second femme lead but was underserved for most of her film career, confined as a pretty, altruistic, genteel young thing in such durable but male-oriented films as The Great John L. (1945), Virginia (1946), The Return of Monte Cristo (1946), Albuquerque (1948), and Champagne for Caesar (1950)."

In the 1950s, Barbara Britton turned to the stage and television. She made her TV debut on an episode of Robert Montgomery Presents in 1950. In her Broadway debut, she co-starred in the short-lived Peggy Wood comedy 'Getting Married' (1951). A couple of seasons, she co-starred with Richard Denning in the TV program Mr. & Mrs. North (1952). Then, Barbara earned major attention as Revlon's lovely pitchwoman and remained on view in that capacity for 12 years. She appeared in Revlon commercials live for several programs, including The $64,000 Question, The $64,000 Challenge, Revlon's Big Party and The Ed Sullivan Show. In between Barbara appeared in several drama series and co-starred in such B films as Bandit Queen (1950), De stoutmoedigen (1952), Bwana Devil (1952), Dragonfly Squadron (1953) and Night Freight (1955) before ending her film career with The Spoilers (1955) opposite Jeff Chandler and Rory Calhoun. She starred in various Broadway shows, including 'Wake Up, Darling' (1956), 'How to Make a Man' (1961), and 'Me and Thee' (1965). As time passed, she became more and more devoted to her family. In the 1970s, Britton sometimes appeared with her two children in such regional shows as Best of Friends, Forty Carats and A Roomful of Roses.

In 1945, she married Eugene Czukor, a naturopathic physician at the time. He later became a psychiatrist when the family moved to New York City in 1957. The couple raised two children, son Theodore, who appeared on the Canadian Shakespearean stage and later became a yoga instructor, and daughter Christina, who grew up to become a model, actress, opera singer, music therapist and romance novelist. Both used the surname Britton in their careers. One of Barbara's last roles was on the daytime soap One Life to Live in 1979, but she was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer not long after. Barbara Britton died in 1980 at age 60.

Naturopathic Doctors and Cancer Care

Cancer has been one of the deadliest diseases known to man. In the year 2017, there are an estimated 1,688,780 new cancer cases diagnosed, and 600,920 deaths caused by Cancer in the United States alone. Cancer patients range from young to adult, and the deadly disease has many sub-categories that can be breast, colon, bones, brain, and many more. In fact, there are more than 200 different types of cancer inexistent and continually affecting millions and millions of people all over the world. Naturopathy offers alternative cancer treatments to help strengthen the immune system and assist in healing.

We’ve all heard about Cancer, and probably know someone who has suffered or has succumbed to the disease but what is it really? Well, Cancer is a class of diseases that are characterized by “out-of-control cell growth”.

It usually starts to harm the body when cells that are altered divided uncontrollably to form lumps or masses of tissue that are commonly known as “tumors”. When the tumors grow, it can affect the digestive, nervous, and circulatory symptoms to malfunction.

Over the years, there have been tons of studies made in order to help cancer patients. Thanks to Science, we have developed new treatments, systems, and instruments that can help lessen, and sometimes cure cancer. However, hospital treatments today does not guarantee a cure. Even up to this day, millions of people around the world succumb to the illness.

Orange County Naturopathic Cancer Doctor

Naturopathic Supportive care can be a good adjunctive therapy to patients who want alternative cancer treatment and are going through conventional cancer treatments. When we say Naturopathic medicine, it is a type of a health care approach that utilizes non-toxic therapies to treat the whole of a person, and “encourage” the self-healing process.

While Naturopathic cancer care is the utilization of naturopathic medicine to oncology and cancer treatment. Just like any other doctors, Naturopathic Doctors bring their innovative knowledge, perspective, and different kind of training to both cancer research and treatment to help the patients have the best possible outcome for their sickness.

Naturopathic cancer care is gaining its popularity among patients due to its reduced side effects, it helps increase their quality of life, change their perspective into something more positive and hopeful, and reportedly improve outcomes in overall cancer treatment.

If you or anyone one you know decides to seek naturopathic help, then expect that as a part of the intake process, some patients may be required to meet with a naturopath in order to know the different treatment options available for the patient and his/her case. The patient’s health history will also be reviewed and taken into consideration in order to come up with various recommendations for a variety of natural therapies according to your specific situation.

Many Types of Alternative Cancer Treatments

The treatment consists of many methods. It utilizes a number of therapies such as fasting, meditation, acupuncture, herbal and nutritional supplementation, holistic practices, and homeopathic treatment. Keep in mind that the goal of naturopathic therapies is to not only help overcome cancer but to also help the patient as a whole person. This comprehensive approach to healing cancer includes a minimum of eight factors:

Proper nutrition and clean water

Detoxification

Immune building

Oxygen therapy

Natural chemotherapies

Lifestyle changes: adequate sleep, sunlight & exercise

A positive attitude

Spiritual Cleansing

Overall, naturopathic doctors observe and study the patient’s environment and situation that creates susceptibility to cancer and use treatments and recommend lifestyle changes that will reduce the potential growth of cancer.

Patients, themselves, are encouraged to work with naturopaths to determine the best-individualized treatment method according to their specific condition.

“Some things are worth waiting for” – While true, this statement is problematic for patients suffering from excruciating pain while waiting to have knee or hip surgery. Fortunately, there are procedures you can entertain while counting down the days (or even months, or even years) until you are seen by the surgeon.

Depending on where you live, the health-care system could be overloaded. In reality, it likely is. Having a years-long waiting list is not uncommon in some communities. Mix in a deadly pandemic and all bets are off when it comes to being treated in a timely manner. Hospital beds are full, surgeries are cancelled, rehabilitation offices are closed – and suddenly fixing a knee or hip is not a priority. The problem is the pain does not go away by itself.

It is ideal to consider alternative therapies leading up to knee or hip surgery that provide comfort in the short term or eliminate the need for surgery altogether.

Many patients consider pain relievers while suffering through the discomfort. These might provide temporary and minor relief, but do not get to the root of the issue. They are not designed to fix or heal, but rather ease the pain and suffering. In a sense, they mask the actual problem. Truthfully, NSAIDs or Advil can make arthritis worse, for instance.

Permanent healing is possible for sufferers using a natural and non-surgical technique involving injections of the body’s own platelets. Known as platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections. PRP decreases a patient’s pain and also heals and regenerates his or her damaged body tissue in joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles and menisci.

It works when we draw the patient’s blood, spin it in a centrifuge, and collect its platelets and plasma. The platelets are combined with a portion of the plasma and this mixture is injected into the damaged area. The entire treatment takes about one hour to perform.

Growth factors derived from platelets encourages DNA synthesis, stimulates the growth of new cells and increases collagen deposits. It is one of the alternative medicine field’s most promising treatments for injuries to the human body.

Another treatment to consider while seeking relief from hip or knee pain is prolotherapy injection therapy. This benefits patients who are suffering with a tendon/ligament injury. The process involves strengthening the ligaments and tendons by the injection of a proliferative agent.

The injection therapy includes the use of ozone gas. This further stimulates chondroblasts to produce more connective tissue for the joint. It begins to ease the pain on the joint and begin to repair it. Patients usually encounter brief soreness for one or two days following the injection but also experience less tenderness.

Nerves run within the ligaments and tendons and can be stretched if they are weak. This results in muscles working overtime to compensate for loose ligaments. The pain occurs when the nerves are stretched by the muscular strain. Strengthening those ligaments and tendons can help alleviate the pain.

It should be noted that research shows a ligament that has been injured will recover only 70 per cent of its prior strength without treatment such as prolotherapy.

Patients have positive responses to prolozone therapy and some even avoid hip or knee replacement surgery altogether.

The questions patients need to ask: Can I live with the pain and discomfort until my surgery? Should I consider alternative treatments and therapies in the meantime?

Prolotherapy and/or prolozone might be effective in treating:

Upper and lower back pain

Arthritis

Avoiding hip or knee replacement surgery

Loose joints

Frozen shoulder

Damaged knee ligaments

Sciatica

Pain of the foot, plantar fasciitis

Tennis elbow

Sprained wrist

Chronic ankle sprain

Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ)

Lumbar disc herniation

Rotator cuff injuries

Fibromyalgia

Sports injuries

Neck pain

Tendonitis

PRP treatment might be ideal for treating:

Whiplash injuries

Low back pain

Neck pain

Migraine headaches

Sciatica

Pain related to osteoarthritis

Degenerative disc disease

Temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMJ Disorder)

Knee arthritis and meniscal injury

Carpel tunnel syndrome

Tendinopathy, tendonosis

Joint capsular laxity

The Chronic Lyme Disease Epidemic

Until recently, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) stated that approximately 30,000 cases of Lyme disease were reported each year. However, in September 2015, the CDC revised their estimates, indicating that more than 329,000 new cases were contracted annually in the US — an increase of up to 10 times what was previously believed. Populations of the ticks that transmit the disease continue to grow and spread, and the number of victims increases.

Lyme is now considered an epidemic in more than 15 states. Healthcare practitioners report increased virulence in the disease, and some speculate that symptoms are amplified by diverse factors such as environmental mold, electromagnetic fields produced by wireless systems and the microwave radiation from mobile phones, general immune deficiencies caused by chronic problems such as poor dental health, and the nutrients missing in our diet. Some doctors also believe that Lyme provides a hospitable environment for opportunistic bacteria that invade the body and choose the weakest areas to survive for as long as possible. And patients may still suffer from symptoms even following chronic lyme disease treatment — a phenomenon the CDC calls PTLDS (Post-Treatment Lyme Disease Syndrome). Symptoms can include diffuse pain, difficulty concentrating, shallow breathing, incapacitating fatigue, seizures and brief bouts of paralysis. Intense inflammation and difficulty controlling it can cause an autoimmune reaction, as with Lyme arthritis.

Lyme disease remains a mysterious, confounding and elusive illness, difficult to diagnose and presenting a range of debilitating symptoms. More funding is needed for the extensive research necessary to develop improved diagnostic testing and comprehensive treatment options. Patients’ testimonials also affirm that the road to recovery can be long and difficult, even after the initial infection is resolved. Despite these challenges, there is no reason to lose hope. If you’re facing the struggle of living with Lyme, you are not alone. Treatment protocols are being refined by expert professionals who work tirelessly to provide patients with the help they need. There is also a worldwide Lyme community, online and off, that can provide support and understanding. The battle can be won with the right team around you, which must involve skilled medical practitioners who are familiar with Lyme and its challenges.

Living with Lyme Disease

Lyme disease is a bacterial infection caused by the bite of the black-legged tick. Borrelia burgdorferi, the most common Lyme bacteria, is an organism with a remarkable ability to mask its presence, so that it won’t be attacked by the immune system. When presented with an immune response, it repeatedly changes its expression and genetic appearance to thwart the attack, so the immune system can’t keep up. In addition, each tick carries an array of microorganisms including viruses, parasites and sometimes fungi. Each tick bite is as unique as a fingerprint. This may account for the array of different symptoms reported by patients, which can include:

Joint pain

“Brain fog”

Fatigue

Muscle pain

Dizziness

Flu-like symptoms

Paralysis and other neurological damage, especially following longterm exposure to Lyme\

Since these symptoms can be caused by any number of other ailments, it may be very difficult for traditionally-trained doctors to identify tick-borne disease and its different manifestations. And Lyme may qualify as an “invisible disease”, making it challenging for a patient who “seems well” to educate friends, family and coworkers about his or her condition. Between coping with symptoms, the quest to obtain appropriate treatment from medical professionals, and lack of understanding from the people around us, living with Lyme can seem like a full-time job, and not an easy one. Fortunately, it is possible to live with Lyme and overcome it. Proper support for one’s overall health and wellbeing are essential to winning the Lyme battle.

Battling Lyme Disease

The first challenge is to find a Lyme Literate Medical Doctor (LLMD). Patients often go to great lengths to navigate treatment options and connect with practitioners who understand their needs. They must learn to manage naturopaths, nutritionists, physical therapists, mental health counselors, and a wide range of other specialists in the quest for relief from the symptoms and consequences of Lyme. They may even travel abroad, since the most compelling research regarding the treatment of Lyme has been conducted overseas. However, the popularity of innovative scholarship and treatments, such as the Klinghardt and Jemsek protocols, means that comprehensive therapy plans are becoming available closer to home.

Which treatment to choose? The default recommendation of an antibiotic regimen may not have the desired effect. Depending on type, stage and exposure to Lyme disease, the results of antibiotic treatments vary, may only provide benefits in the short term, and sometimes cause more harm than good. The complexity of the disease requires a comprehensive treatment approach that addresses and supports the body’s own resources, in addition to attacking the infection itself.

Ensuring overall wellness is vital to the fight against Lyme. Any medical treatment, no matter how high-tech and cutting-edge, will not have the desired effect unless the patient is otherwise in the best possible health. Proper nutrition is necessary to support healthy gut flora, and provide cells with nutrients and basic building blocks so they can function correctly. Supplements may be required to address deficiencies. Professional guidance is strongly recommended when implementing any dietary change or supplemental regimen.

Alternative treatments include supplement protocols, detox regimens, oxygen therapies and natural anti-microbial treatments. Stem cell therapies, an exciting and innovative option for repairing and replacing damaged tissues, have become more widely accessible. Mental health support is vital, to combat the stress and anxiety that may arise from being a warrior for one’s own wellbeing. And a foundational approach to treatment – one that emphasizes changing the environment within the body, to make optimal health more achievable – has been shown to be very effective in combating not only active Lyme infection, but also its lingering aftermath.

Bottom line: The human immune system and its ability to heal are among nature’s most sophisticated and complex designs, and any outside interventions should always support and not disrupt that healing process. There’s no “one size fits all” – everyone’s case is different. Therefore, once you have found your trusted practitioner, have him or her provide you with a personalized road map of treatments and supplements, ideally employing the best methods of both traditional and alternative medicine, while remaining as non-toxic as possible and as non-invasive as possible.

Does Lyme disease stay with you for life?

Yes and no. The answer to this question depends on the duration of the infection prior to treatment, and on the vast array of complex activity within a body affected by Lyme. But it also depends on you. Being vigilant and taking care of yourself conscientiously goes a long way towards living symptom-free for long periods of time, if not for the rest of your life.

Many Lyme patients reported that the healing phase from tick-borne disease took them up to 12 months or more. Patients who opt for cellular therapies and foundational medicine methods have found that the reward of a sustainable result and a therapy approach that syncs with the body’s own healing process comes with the downside of slow recovery. During the recovery phase it is recommended that patients manage symptoms with home remedies and a natural supplement regimen, to control histamine reaction, inflammation, sleeping disorders, pain ‘flare ups’ and so forth. Again, it is also very important to care for oneself in a broader sense, with special attention to proper nutrition, mental health care, a sustainable exercise program, and community support. Lyme is a debilitating disease, but it need not be a life sentence.

Can you live a normal life with Lyme Disease?

What do patients say?

Fontaine, a “Lyme warrior”, says the following: “Yes, for the most part. But Lyme is a chronic, degenerative condition — a multisystem inflammatory attack that must be intermittently battled on myriad fronts. There will be times of normality and times of distress. Peaks and valleys. It’s critically important, then, that you guard your well-being and take good care of your body. Prioritize this and don’t feel self-indulgent.”

Another Lyme patient said: “Think of food as medicine. Become better-informed in this regard, and always be mindful of what you eat. Poor diet, stress and a sedentary lifestyle can wreak havoc. And being attentive to mental health is every bit as important. Be kind to yourself and try to cultivate patience. Attitude and emotions color everything.”

Andrea, who has been battling Lyme for over a decade, says: “Chronic illness can be highly inconsistent symptoms-wise. Symptoms also vary from patient to patient and therefore can be additionally stressful. Recognizing this will help you move through difficult episodes and forward on your path to healing. I have started writing a blog to track and share my experience. That way I can inform, comfort, and help other ‘Lymies’ in the online community. I also know of many that keep a private journal, which may be therapeutic in your case. I think, above all, its important not to isolate yourself.”

These patient experiences show the drastic impact Lyme can have on one’s life. Living with Lyme affects the way you live your life, your sleeping and eating habits, and sensitivity to your body’s symptoms. It can also affect you emotionally, and require a strong mental makeup to continue coping with the rollercoaster of symptoms. Despite these obstacles, there is no reason to lose hope. The battle against Lyme can eventually be won, with care, courage and the right support group around you, which must involve skilled medical practitioners who are familiar with Lyme and its many challenges.

Managing your chronic illness can feel like a full-time job, but what if it only took a few small changes per day to make your life easier?

Imagine making it through an entire day without feeling fatigued, or being able to recalibrate quickly when a bout of depression overwhelms you. More energy, stronger muscles, less pain and exhaustion – it sounds almost too good to be true when you’ve been living with chronic degenerative illness for so long.

What if small tweaks to your daily routine could be a more effective treatment than taking a pain pill?

Here are some evidence-based lifestyle tips if you live with a chronic disease – like diabetes, MS and so many others – so you don’t have to waste time wading through what’s fact or fiction.

Stay Hydrated

It’s no secret that your body depends on water to survive, but did you know that drinking less water can aggravate your symptoms? According to some studies it even lead to an increased number of certain conditions and a higher risk of fatality.

Water does more than just quench your thirst. It also carries more nutrients to your cells, flushes bacteria out of your system, and increases your energy levels so you can function better overall.

Drinking more water is one of the most important lifestyle tips out there, but how much water is ideal? Harvard Health suggests drinking 30-50 ounces per day, but you might say that’s easier said than done.

Not so fast. Drinking more water can be as easy as:

Setting timers on your phone to remind you.

Keeping a water bottle near you that’s the 30-50 oz.

Drinking a glass before every meal and right when you wake up in the morning.

Eating water-rich foods like salads and fruits.

Adding broth-based meals to your diet, like soup.

Keep Your Environment Clean

Your environment directly affects your quality of life and too often we don’t realize how many toxins are in our homes and the products we use.

Do you know how much damaging bacteria and chlorine is in your shower head? It’s not pretty, which is why making a simple change by using a chlorine filter in the shower head can go a long way, especially when living with autoimmune disorders.

And that’s only one of many easy modifications you can make.

You can try buying an air purifier to reduce mold issues, or use non-toxic products around the house or on your skin. Luckily, more companies are turning toward healthy non-toxic products, which makes finding them much easier.

You can also regularly clean your washing machine or switch to glass food containers to avoid the chemicals that enter your food and water from plastic.

Some studies have even found that interventions to stop further exposure or detoxify the body can be life-changing, especially with chronic illness.

Experiment with Nutrition

Most chronic diseases are often linked to vitamin deficiency and bad nutrition, which means you have more power than you think to affect your symptoms by getting intentional about the foods you eat. Some helpful changes include:

Eating organic and choosing foods that haven’t been treated with pesticides, which have been linked with various disorders and cancers.

Intermittent fasting to help cleanse your body, reduce inflammation and increase energy overall.

Trying out vegan, Paleo, or histamine diets.

Shoot for balance over complete elimination. If you try to completely eliminate things your body is used to, there’s a better chance the lifestyle change won’t stick around. It’s okay to be good only 80 percent of the time and cheat the other 20 if you still enjoy your food and life. What’s most important is listening to your body, so consider working with a nutrition specialist to develop the ideal plan for your lifestyle and make sure you’re getting everything your body needs.

Practice Self-Care

Mental health is as important as physical fitness when living with chronic diseases like depression or MS, so adding non-spiritual meditation, taking a break from social media or even spending time in nature can be just what the doctor ordered.

Self-care can be effortless, such as taking a long shower or bath, spending time reading before bed or even journaling. A journal is an excellent method for tracking your progress, too.

The activity doesn’t have to be big or time-consuming to work.

Sleep with Low Interference

Bad sleep can you leave you feeling groggy and unwilling to do anything, but it’s also a major factor in the risk and worsening of chronic conditions.

Without good sleep, your body and brain don’t have time to restore its lost functions from the day, process memories or knowledge, and recalibrate for the next morning.

On the other hand, getting enough quality sleep can lessen the symptoms of chronic conditions, reduce fatigue and improve your overall mood. If you deprive yourself of sleep, you’re putting your immune system at risk, and increasing safety risks and the possibility of other diseases, too.

Do you feel like your sleep might not be the best? Try:

Keeping lights low at night.

Sleeping in a dark room without the TV or phone – so your brain can relax.

Avoiding screen time an hour or so before bed.

Indulging in that self-care we mentioned earlier during that extra hour.

Investing in a comfortable mattress, since you spend a third of your day on it.

Keeping bedtime around the same time for a better routine and healthy circadian rhythm.

Remember the easiest changes are the ones you don’t have to think twice about.

Exercise Regularly

We know exercise improves mood, helps you lose weight, boosts your ability to fend off infection and lowers risks of disease, but how do you start without it overwhelming you?

Find an exercise you love that doesn’t require a lot of effort. The best kind of exercise is something that’s fun for you and/or doesn’t require much discipline making it easier to do it. Regardless of what you choose, it’s always best to consult your physician before engaging in physical activities.

You might try yoga, pilates, step aerobics, dance, weightlifting or barre in your neighborhood. One of the easiest exercises is walking, and by adding nature to the mix, you can positively affect both your physical and mental health. Some of the best exercises for you, according to Harvard Health are:

Swimming

Tai chi

Strength training

Walking

If another task isn’t ideal you can always try these low effort exercises:

Standing/sitting crunches where you tighten and release your abdominal muscles.

Take the stairs instead of the elevator.

Circling your arms as you sit.

Squats as you brush your teeth or toe lifts when you’re cooking.

Exercising during a single song.

The goal is to try adding small exercises in the routine you have now. Remember, it all comes down to something you’re willing to show up for.

Join Support Groups

Chronic disease can make you feel like your body is turning against you, causing sudden shifts in energy, mood swings, general discomfort or limitations in function. It makes it difficult to know how your body will react each day, making socializing difficult.

Some of your friends or family members might not understand why symptoms cause you to cancel plans at a moment’s notice or even be selective about where you go. It can put a strain on relationships, leading to lost friends or even secluding yourself, and eventually loneliness can set in.

It’s important to know that you’re not alone.

Chronic illnesses – like lupus, COPD, multiple sclerosis and many others – are more common than you think and support groups can offer you a safe place to connect with others who are going through the same thing. When you’re surrounded by people who understand what you’re going through, you don’t have to put in any extra effort and their support can go a long way, even helping you find new ways to manage day to day.

Set Small Goals for Success

We know you’re tired and overwhelmed, so adding more to your plate might seem counterintuitive, but living with chronic illness can be a whole lot easier if you set yourself up for success with smaller goals.

If hydration is first on your list of lifestyle changes, set up a goal to drink enough each day. Maybe it’s going to a support group once a week or simply taking time to journal each night before bed. Whatever you choose, challenge yourself to stick to it and remind yourself daily how to good it feels to accomplish even that one thing. Setting up small goals can go a long way.

Another great tip is to track your progress of a goal in a visible place everyday, maybe on a corkboard or hanging on the wall. It’s a great way to see your progress, remind yourself why you’re doing it and reward yourself, without having to remember it. Whenever you check off one goal, you can bask in the feeling of accomplishment and celebrate your win.

Chronic illness management works when you make small changes that complement your life, instead of completely overhauling it. While living with chronic conditions can make it more difficult to function, these changes can reduce the symptoms and give you more power back, especially when it all seems out of your control.

It doesn’t have to feel like a full-time job when you have small goals and better support in multiple areas, such as your social life, nutrition, sleep, self-care, environment, exercise and water consumption. Even one of these daily shifts can make enacting the others much easier, too. Make winning the day a regular experience with these 8 chronic illness management tips.

I went to a Naturopathic doctor today - first time since I was ill back in March/April as (touch wood) all has been well :-) and my supplements had run out (things basically to help digestion without going for the tradtional medicine / pharmacology - just my personal preference if possible)

And (touch wood again) I have had zero pain since then which is absolutely brilliant and I am sooooo happy about.

I want to make sure it stays that way so I went back. All good (fingers crossed) and I'll be ordering some more natural supplements (but less) this afternoon.

At the end of the session, the naturopath gave me a little bit of reflexology too. Right at the end of the session, she took both my feet and legs and from the feet she wiggled them. That's the best way i can think of describing it. She wiggled and wiggled until it made my spine - she described it as how a fish's body moves when it swims - zig zagging. The idea is to get oxygen/movement/energy into you spine.

Well. when she stopped, it was like having bubbles emanate from my spine. It was lovely! Like drinking champagne in your spine. Aaaah.

This drawing depicts the upas tree as metaphor for the effects of smallpox vaccination as seen by naturopathic and possibly homeopathic practitioners and anti-vaccinationists in the early 20th century. The upas tree is itself poisonous. Date unknown. Lantern slide.

Because I'm on so much medication and supplements with my assorted "issues" - at the very least taking 15 assorted vitamins, minerals and meds each night - my naturopath suggested I undergo a detox program to flush out my liver, kidneys and adrenal system which have all been pretty much exhausted over years of abuse. If it makes me feel in any way closer to "fresh and clean" inside, I'm all for it!
