A Siberian Jay (Perisoreus infaustus) backlit by the sun whilst some snow is coming down from the branches above. Few other Siberian Jays were having an argument there... lucky me.

Spent a lot of time during this year's trip at the Kitka river (Kitkajoki) to photograph White-throated Dippers (Cinclus cinclus) . The circumstances were perfect; many Dippers, fresh snow, and thick ice. The only downside were the cold temperatures, up to -29 degrees Celcius, causing a haze above the water. The result was a fair amount of hazy pictures, but thank God also enough photos without that annoying haze. This is one of them, and a few more will follow.
Focused mainly on shots with a longer exposure and used only a 70-200mm lens for that, just to get enough of that silky water in each shot.
This remains one of my favorite places to photograph birds in their natural environment. What a wonderful place this is.

Driving around in the wider area of Kuusamo during an early morning usually results in a couple of good photographic opportunities; Black Grouse, Hazel Grouse or then in this case a few Western Capercaillies (Tetrao urogallus). Happy Days!

The last image from the tour to Kuusamo. There I spent a lot of time at the Kitka river (Kitkajoki) to photograph White-throated Dippers (Cinclus cinclus) . The circumstances were perfect; many Dippers, fresh snow, and thick ice. The only downside were the cold temperatures, up to -29 degrees Celcius. It wasn’t always easy.
Focused mainly on shots with a longer exposure and used only a 70-200mm lens for that, just to get enough of that silky water in each shot. Experimented a lot, high key, low key, composition, and more.... it’s so much fun that you forget the cold temperatures rather fast.

Always hoping to see a Siberian Tit (Poecile cinctus), whilst being in the greater area of Kuusamo. Have seen this species several times in the northern parts of Finland, and every time I see them again its a highlight. They are small and quick and thus a great challenge to photograph.

Standing on top of Ristikallio. Ristikallio can be found on one of the most popular hiking trails in Finland, the legendary and amazing Karhunkierros Trail, in the Oulanka National Park, close to Kuusamo. The trail offers many sweat-breaking kilometres, though above all superb sights, such as the view from Ristikallio. Thanks to route alternatives, the trail is also suitable for day trips, and that's exactly what we did when visiting Ristikallio; 5km towards Ristikallio in daylight and 5km back to the parking lot during the dark hours of the day. In one word, spectacular. Happy Days!

Riisitunturi National Park. The park's humid climatic conditions contribute to its natural beauty. In winter the spruce trees that cover many of the park's hillsides are clad with a thick coating of condensed frost, creating a photogenic white forest.

Well technically Kuusamo isn't Lapland, but it's just a stone throw away. This was one of the last images I took during my 2 week visit to Kuusamo and surroundings. Lots of action, lots of images, and many of those will be uploaded during the next few weeks to come.
