Central Valley, California

The Central Valley of California is now mostly farmland. However, it still serves as a critical stop for birds who migrate through during the winter. Sandhill Cranes arrive in the Central Valley in late fall and stay until February/March when they fly back north to breed in northern California, Oregon, Washington and British Columbia.

This photo was taken at daybreak at Staten Island. Located in the heart of the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta, Staten is 9,200 acres located between the North and South Forks of the Mokelumne River. Staten Island has been a wintering destination for Sandhill Cranes moving along the Pacific Flyway for more than 40 years. The Nature Conservancy acquired the Island in 2001 to protect its important role as a place for wildlife-friendly agriculture to support conservation along the flyway. Staten Island’s assortment of crops provides both foraging and roosting habitat across the fall and winter seasons for wintering cranes.

From Wikipedia:

"The coyote is a prominent character in Native American folklore, mainly in the Southwestern United States and Mexico, usually depicted as a 'trickster' that alternately assumes the form of an actual coyote or a man. As with other trickster figures, the coyote uses deception and humor to rebel against social conventions."

I like that!

Birds and wildlife are busily collecting and storing food for the winter ahead. I watched the Redheads for about an hour this morning before deciding to get a few shots. Especially since one of the stops was on a branch close enough to get a decent capture.

I was just saying a few weeks ago on another post that I was DYING to photograph this tree in snow. :)

Well, I finally got my chance. Some more sugar-frosted goodness from my trip this weekend. I still can't get over how beautiful it looked. I nearly froze my hiney off on this shot--I stood in this spot for a long time waiting for the clouds to thin enough to just barely reveal Half Dome in the distance, but I think it was worth the wait.

The Nature Conservancy Trail to McCall Point was used to create the western firebreak for the Rowena fire.

Apparently, the trail itself was not damaged and the fire was kept to the eastern edge of the trail.

Winter rains and the lack of down slope vegetation make create new problems in the fall and winter.

NOTE: As of August 18, the McCall Point trail is closed.

I met this guy just a few weeks ago. He is the largest of three other Alligators that I know of in one of my particular spots in the Lake. I swear I could watch him all day.

Christmas time in the woods can be lovely. SOOC.

Nature does not exist to dazzle us with it's beauty or to fascinate us in all of it's complexity. The earth itself has not been created to sustain us, heal us, delight us, or entertain us. Yet nature and the earth do all of these things. Is it too much to ask for us to show a little appreciation and effort at conservation?

Managed by the Nature Conservancy, this 1,600-acre nature preserve is located in Preston County, West Virginia and Garrett County, Maryland. From the Nature Conservancy site - "A window into ice ages past, Cranesville Swamp is located in a "frost pocket," an area where the surrounding hills capture moisture and cold air that conspire to create a landscape more reminiscent of habitat found much further north in Canada. Given Cranesville Swamp’s lush forest and wetland, it’s not surprising that it is home to an exceptional variety of animals. In total, more than 50 rare plants and animals live at Cranesville." Did not see a ton of birds, mostly they were high up in the trees - along with the squirrels. But I did see a hairy woodpecker and a few butterflies. Still, it was a nice day to be in the preserve on my visit, Thursday August 10th, 2017.
