The "European praying mantis" (Mantis Religiosa) is the only representative of the order of mantis (Mantodea) occurring in Central Europe.

Females can grow up to 75 mm long, males are much smaller and reach a length of up to 60 mm.

The basic coloration ranges from pale green to brown.

The elongated neck shield and the large triangular, very mobile head are striking!

So it looks like the spring has come finally, it was about the time! I've got nothing against the winter, but it was little too long this time. It is nice to see some green around again. This picture is from last year autumn and has nothing to do with a spring mood. Meh, whatever:-)

Lower Falls Creek Falls, Gifford Pinchot National Forest, WA

What a beautiful waterfall. The hike had more elevation gain than I anticipated (I was missing my hiking poles after a while), but it was a great hike to a wonderful destination. The sunlight hitting the mist at the top really gave it a mystical feel. I bet if one timed it right one could really get some awesome sunburst action or morning mist magic.

Samwise and I arrived about 20min before a whole bunch of folks started to arrive, and by then we had turned around and were going up the other part of the Falls Creek Falls trail (WAY up), and there were some great places to pull over and watch the water and enjoy the sunshine. On our way back down we took the alternate route back to the parking lot, and I'm so glad we did. First off the forest was gorgeous; moss tufts clinging to bark, a carpet of green springy moss, light and shadows dappling the leaves and ferns, babbling creek sounds...oh so wonderful. And there were a lot of birds or insects making a sort of clacking sound (I imagined a bunch of tiny crabs in the trees clacking their pincers together, it's the best analogy I could come up with to describe the sound) that was entertaining. Secondly, I'm glad we went the other route because there were hardly any folks on that part of the trail, and when we got back to the parking lot it was overflowing with cars and people, meaning the main path would've been a clogged nightmare. Thank goodness the robins outside my window woke me up a little earlier than I originally planned this morning so I could get out and enjoy nature before being bogged down by other nature-seeking people.

Happy Memorial Day everyone.

Moisty fog leans from the green bushes and grasses, all different kinds of smells make the air thick and heavy. Earthy organic heat makes you sweat. Tops of the trees disappear somewhere far up in the haze. Strange noises begin to haunt the place, seems to sound somewhere from behind you. What bloodthirsty creature might that be? And where is it for the God's sake? Oh wait, it was just a lorry on the road right behind me:-) I'm in Central Czech Region, no jungle here anymore, just few little places like this one for nature seekers...

today I was reminded of the importance of patience, to Squirrels And Photographers. So after getting my exercise at Bass Ponds, I spent most of my time at Veterans park sitting on my backside. And it worked! This Greenie and a few others came to me. And I also had some nice conversations with a few other nature seekers.
