A peatbog...
An excursion to Lake Pratignano, a peat bog in the Apennines, offers a unique natural experience, particularly for those interested in unique flora and fauna. The area is known for its diverse plant life, including carnivorous plants like the round-leaved sundew, and is a resting spot for migrating birds. Visitors can enjoy walking trails, explore the surrounding plateau, and potentially discover the "Grotta delle fate" (Fairies' Cave).
Until the last century this high mountain marsh lake was home to rare species of newts
Copilot summary:
Lake Pratignano sounds like a hidden gem tucked into the Apennines — a place where nature whispers old legends and rare species thrive in quiet harmony. 🌿
Here’s a deeper look at what makes this spot so enchanting:
🌾 A Living Peat Bog
Unique in Northern Italy, Lake Pratignano is one of the few high-altitude peat bogs in the region.
The Drosera rotundifolia, or round-leaved sundew, is a tiny carnivorous plant that thrives here, luring insects with its glistening, sticky tentacles.
The bog’s slow-moving, cold waters support a delicate ecosystem, once home to rare newts and still a haven for amphibians and insects.
🐦 A Birdwatcher’s Retreat
During spring and autumn, the lake becomes a rest stop for migrating birds, offering a peaceful spectacle for nature lovers.
Trails & Legends
The surrounding plateau is ideal for hiking, with trails leading through beech forests and open grasslands.
On the Bolognese side lies the Grotta delle Fate (Fairies’ Cave), steeped in local legend. It’s said that mysterious fairies lure wanderers into the lake on foggy days — a tale that adds a mystical layer to the landscape.
🌳 Notable Landmarks
A centuries-old beech tree stands sentinel near the lake, adding to the area’s magical atmosphere.
The Becco dell’Aquila (Eagle’s Beak), a rocky spur overlooking the lake, offers breathtaking views — though not for the faint of heart or those with vertigo.
If you're planning a visit, the best way to reach the lake is on foot from Fanano or Ca’ del Vento, making the journey part of the experience.
The Grindjisee is a lake of mysterious beauty. It is still surface mirrors the Matterhorn and a pair of larches. This small stretch of water with its abundance of moorland flora is a magnet for biologists and botanists and a treat for all nature lovers. The lake lies behind the former lateral moraine of a retreated glacier, and its shores offer a habitat for many rare plants.

(Globe thistle) Echinops are one of those plants that you either know or you don’t. Popular with gardeners who have space and big, deep herbaceous borders, they tend to be ignored by those who have smaller gardens. This is because most Echinops can be big. If this is a problem for you try Echinops ritro ‘Veitch’s Blue’ as it is ideal for smaller gardens

With this image and a few earlier posts, I am just inviting you in for a glimpse inside my humble abode. As well as expanding my personal knowledge while I play with settings etc. on the camera.
I want to give a shout out to the group “Smile on Saturday” for getting me out of my comfort zone when it comes to taking photos. The group is a themed group and it has been challenging for me to follow along with the theme since I joined three weeks ago.
I have wanted to try taking selective color images for a long time and just never took the time to figure out how to do it. I sure can use some more practice with this technique but I’m happy with this image since it’s my first of its kind.
I hope you smile a lot today and every day. Happy snapping.
I want bright spring colors, a warm spring breeze carrying the aromas of spring flowers...
I would like to listen to the quiet splash of oars on the mirror-like surface of the river, to listen to the squeak of kingfishers flying low, low over the river...
and the cries of flocks of birds returning home...
it's still cold and gray here :(
there are a lot of these lovely wildflowers in the meadow by the river (unfortunately, I don’t know what they are called)
I really like how the setting sun paints everything in warm honey tones.
The trek down the steel mesh steps or the abseil isn’t for the faint of heart, but it is absolutely worth it to enjoy the awe inspiring feat of engineering and the vista alike, with the dam wall already towering at a mammoth 140 metres and holding 30 times the water of Sydney Harbour. Gordon Dam is one of many dams used for Tasmania’s hydroelectricity. Despite man’s influence on the area, it’s still a beautiful place for nature lovers and the broader public to visit.
