This is one of a pair of Pumas that guard the entrance to the new Museum of Natural History at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Originally, they were made in 1940, composed of terrazzo painted black, and installed on either side of the entrance to the original museum. After 60 years the statues became quite worn, so molds were made from the originals, and new statues were cast in bronze in 2007. The originals were restored and placed in storage.

The Michigan-born sculptor, Carelton Watson Angell (1887-1962), was the Museum Artist, and worked at U of M for 30 years.

Crystal forest, Petrified Forest National Park, Arizona, USA

Petrified Forest National Park is a fantastic park in northeastern Arizona, home to some of the finest collections of petrified wood in the United States.

It features rolling hills covered in barrens, flat mesas, and hills that look as if God dropped candle wax on them. The terrain here ranges from stripes of desert brown to marbled blue, culminating in the deep desert reds of the Painted Forest. Many of the park's landmarks are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

As Arctic permafrost thaws, the landscape begins to shift—subtle at first, then unmistakable. Soil creep nudges the floodplain into motion, carving out a network of shallow, interlacing channels. These micro braided streams reflect the sky in fractured ribbons, winding through tufts of golden tundra grass, dappled with Arctic Cotton.

Over the years, successive spring freshets scour the terrain, washing away fine sandy materials and leaving behind only large cobbles and boulders. The stream channel widens and becomes shallower, slowing the flow and allowing the water to warm under the long Arctic summer sun. It’s a quiet transformation, where geology, climate, and time converge to reshape the land in slow, deliberate strokes—a living mosaic of water, earth, and change.

These spectacular coloured hills are painted by the palette of nature.

The "Painted Hills" near Cache Creek, British Columbia, are a visually striking geological feature characterized by vibrant yellow and orange hues, located on the Marble Range of mountains. These colors are due to the presence of iron and quartz within the serpentinite and dolomite outcroppings. The hills are situated along Highway 97, about 15 km north of Cache Creek.

Minerals enrich the soil, producing this phenomenon of rich coloured hues of yellow and gold.

** Please note - higher up the mountain, if you look close you may notice trees that have been burnt as a result of a forest fire.
