This is part of the Old Natchez Trace Road in Tennessee. No one travels the old road anymore. Most of the Old Road is no longer around; only signs that point the direction of where it once was or pathways of the past...

Bald Cypress trees in the swamp.

Natchez-Trace foot bridge. Mississippi scenery.

Many years ago, the Pearl River flowed here. The river changed course. A shallow area was created by the deposition of sediments as the river retreated. During periodic low water, seedlings of water-tolerant cypress and tupelo trees gained a foothold. The trees you see today are a result.

A bridge over the swamp leading to a trail. I did not have time to walk the trail this morning but will return with my tripod and do a little hiking in the near future. Will attempt for an improvement with the trees as well.

I've always wanted to drive the Natchez Trace, and was finally able to do so. Just north of Jackson, Mississippi this lone bald cypress in the water caught my eye. If you ever get a chance to drive the Trace, it's a two lane road of gorgeousness, actually through a national park, with a 50 mph speed limit. There are miles and miles of destruction, too, where a tornado tore through and left the forest stripped and haunting. And, you might also see the occasional deer. Make sure you have your favorite music available, sit back, and let the beauty feed your soul.

The Natchez Trace, again...it was while photographing leaves that I pulled my camera away from my face and found a big praying mantis on the front of my camera. Luckily I didn't drop my camera ;) but it was close!

This sulfur mushroom reminded me of the stage at the Hollywood Bowl, so let's raise the curtain on this new year. Frankly I don't understand New Year's as a holiday. You stay up all night and yell "Hurrah! It's tomorrow!" Shouldn't we feel like that every day? And if not, maybe it's time to reassess our outlook on things. All that aside, I wish you all many great adventures and happiness in 2023 and beyond. Duck River, Tennessee, USA, September 2022

Bald Cypress trees in the swamp.

Heading back to the car after photographing the falls, the morning sun was beaming through the trees. It was kind of funky how the two trees in the foreground had combined into one. Duck River, Tennessee, USA, June 2022

Fall Hollow

Mile 391.9

Natchez Trace Parkway, TN

06-01-25

I didn't drive across Highway 40 from Memphis to Nashville. Instead I decided to take the day driving the Natchez Trace Parkway, which begins in Mississippi and ends in Nashville. I picked it up in Tupelo, MS.

Before leaving for the trip, I made note of which turnouts I wanted to experience and photograph along the way. One was this waterfall (one of a series of them, actually) in Fall Hollow. It's advertised as a waterfall you can walk behind, and indeed you can, but I decided against that. The shots I took from nearer the waterfall aren't as interesting to look at as this view, showing the falls over the rocks. (I'm a lot more careful with each trip, and didn't want to imagine trying to call 911 without cell service if I happened to trip on the slippery rocks and break my hip!)

As it happened, I did hike all the way down to the falls to get this shot. A lot of folks just opt for the observation platform and don't take the perilous set of natural "steps" to the bottom of the falls. I ended up opting for the observation platform while visiting another waterfall (Burgess Falls) on the way to Gatlinburg a few days later, but there was an hour time difference and I wanted to get to Gatlinburg before nightfall.

I was hoping for a little better reflections. But I think this is all I'm gonna get with this much light pollution.

A different angle of Jackson Falls to split the frame between the flow and the foliage. With the recent lack of rain, I was lucky to get this much flow in the falls. Duck River, Tennessee, USA, June 2022

Got up early one morning while visiting my brother in Tennessee to see if there was any water flowing at Jackson Falls. As it turned out, there was a little despite the recent lack of rain. The air was very still,so I was able to get away with a long shutter speed and keep the flowers sharp. Duck River, Tennessee, USA, June 2022

After the Natchez Trace became a national road in 1800, George Colbert, a powerful Chickasaw Indian Chief and a brother to Levi Colbert at Buzzard Roost Spring, operated a ferry and stand at the river. Visitors at this exhibit can see where George Colbert's stand was located and an old photograph of the stand itself. George Colbert was a clever businessman, and it is said that he once charged Andrew Jackson $75,000. to ferry the Tennessee army across the river.

Happy Falls Friday. Fall Hallow in the twilight of the evening. Fall Hallow Falls is easily reached off the Natchez Trace Parkway. This fall is not the main fall, but is another interesting fall along the trail. A path and a set of wooden bridges take you across the small creeks before they begin their tumbling descent. The easy part of the path ends at an observation deck where you can look down at the largest waterfall. Lewis County, Tennessee, USA, October 2015

HFF ... could be fence Friday or falls Friday but either way, it's a happy day. Fall Hallow is off the Natchez Trace Parkway in Tennessee. The parkway is a very pretty and scenic drive. This is the foot bridge at the entrance to the area (the falls are farther down the trail). Their are two falls along the hike, and several nice little cascades flowing down the creek. Also known as Chicken of the Woods, although I thought the latter applied to people who are afraid to climb trees. My brother Rick and I went hiking in some local woods and came across a couple sulfur mushrooms. Their color are really interesting, and they are apparently edible ... but we didn't try them. They are supposed to taste similar to crab meat. This specimen was about the size of a head of lettuce, but they can grow up to 100 pounds. Duck River, Tennessee, USA, October 2022

Happy Falls Friday. Fall Hallow trail is on the Natchez Trace Parkway, a scenic drive a about an hour out of Nashville. There are several nice short hikes and picnic areas along the parkway. If you are interested in waterfalls, you will want to take a short walk on the Fall Hollow Trail at milepost 391.9. The trail has many cascades as well beside the trail. Gordon House

Natchez Trace

Near Williamsport, TN

A lot of the historic antique buildings I photographed when in Tennessee seemed to be lonely dwellings in the middle of nowhere. This one is a two story brick building in the middle of a field.

From our friends as Wikipedia: The house was built in 1818. It is one of only two remaining structures from the early history of the Natchez Trace located along the Natchez Trace Parkway. It was built by John Gordon and his wife Dolly, the main house of a plantation that included 1500 acres, a ferry over the Duck River and a trading post.

So interesting to note that the "surviving" buildings and homes I photographed were at one point in history surrounded by more buildings and were stops along roads where others traveled. Like in all the movies I've seen about the push west (and in this case, I guess, south) people would find an area they liked, homestead it, and then stay there for generations. According to the NPS website, John Gordon, being the operator of a river ferry, was pretty well off, and his home here was always full of guests and fellow travelers.

Jackson Falls on the Natchez Trace.

We're back at Jackson Falls with a slightly tighter view that before with some oakleaf hydrangea at the base of a tree. The air was nice and still, so the flowers came out pretty sharp on the 30 second exposure. Duck River, Tennessee, USA, June 2022
