More mistiness from the weekend. I quite liked the narrowboat disappearing off into the mist.

On the Erewash canal at Hallam Fields.

For those unfamiliar with name, it is pronounced "Erreh-wash" The canal runs more or less alongside the river.

From Wiki:

Etymology

The approximate meaning of the name is not in doubt, but there is room for debate about the precise derivation and its connotations. Brewer[1] gives the commonly accepted explanation that it comes from the Old English words irre ("wandering") and wisce ("wet meadow"). This is accepted by Cameron, a leading place name expert, and a Derbyshire specialist, who interprets the name as "wandering, marshy river".[2] Gelling, who specialises in seeking precise topgraphical equivalents for toponymic elements, confirms that wisce signifies a marshy meadow[3] but gives only southern examples. She conjectures that there is an element, wæsse, perhaps Old English, that signifies very specifically "land by a meandering river which floods and drains quickly",[4] and her examples are primarily Midland and northern. This seems to fit the Erewash perfectly. A good example of the meandering character of the river will be seen around Gallows Inn Playing Fields, Ilkeston, where rapid flooding and draining occur frequently.

I liked the way the rising sun lit up this narrowboat on the Wey.

Planters galore on this narrowboat on the Calder and Hebble Navigation at Brookfoot, Brighouse in West Yorkshire.

A visit to Skipton this morning brought freezing murky weather as can be seen here. All narrow boats including these two named Jack and Jill were stuck fast in the ice of the Leeds and Liverpool canal.

This narrowboat "Pacific Gull" from Gailey Marins was seen heading backto Gailey Marina after a weekend hire.

With a calm day it was great for reflection photos.

The term 'narrowboat' (one word) has become widely accepted to describe modern purpose built steel craft of a beam to fit on the narrow canal system. It is generally more accurate to refer to historic working boats as 'narrow boats' (two words).

These days a wide variety of narrow boats can be found on the waterways – from preserved historic working boats, purpose built hire boats, hotel boats, camping boats, and privately owned boats of every kind from scruffy to the immaculate floating 'country cottage' with all mod cons. The boats in this photo are all commercial vessels.

Another shot from my recent excursion to the Wey at Pyrford.

A family day out on the canal in October. there's nothing like messing about on the canal.

Regent's Canal, Islington, North London.

At this point, we are near to the old Chester town wharf...industrial past meets gentrified area, with new apartments for bright young things living and working in Chester. Two more to come in this series.

At Ellesmere Port Boat Museum.

Working narrowboats that in their time were the homes as well as the working environment for canal dwelling families....delightfully preserved and presented by skilled volunteers.

Nice narrowboat seen on the Stratford upon Avon canal

Worcester and Birmingham canal Worcester.

The River Wey at Godalming and a couple of Narrow Boats tied up for the day - or may be longer . Some of the moored boats along this stretch looked as if they were at a permanent mooring . A nice stretch of the River Wey here at Godalming and not far off shot to the right is a 90 degree left turn for the boats to keep the helmsmen on their toes - and a good stop off point to stock up on supplies with a Saisburies Superstore there .
