The name of the village of Lower Slaughter stems from the Old English name for a wet land 'slough' or 'slothre' (Old English for muddy place) upon which it lies. This quaint village sits beside the little Eye stream and is known for its unspoilt limestone cottages in the traditional Cotswold style.
The stream running through the village is crossed by two small bridges.

Spindle (so named because the wood was used to make spindles) makes a fantastic hedge plant (or small tree in a hedge) because of its unique fall color scheme. In autumn we can enjoy the opening flaps of the fruits, from which orange seeds emerge. The berries are poisonous but the birds love them!!

Onomastics & Santorini's Colours
She is so beautiful and has so many names.
*Calliste or Kallisti
The Island was first called Kalliste, meaning "the most beautiful".
*Thira or Thera
In antiquity the island's name was Thera. It was named after Theras, son of Autesion, who was the descendant of Polyneikes.
Theras brought with him Mycaenians from Sparta and made the island a colony of the Lacedaemonians.
* Strogili
Another ancient name referring to Santorini was Strogili. Strogili means "rounded" because of the round shape of the group of islands which form Santorini.
*Santorini
Santorini has a Latin root,it was given by the Venetians who after the Fourth Crusade,1204, had dominion over the island and named it after the Chapel of Santa Irini.

This charming little bird, despite its name, it is not actually a canary or a true flycatcher. It was long classified as a member of the Old World Flycatcher family, Muscicapidae. However, recent genetic analyses have revealed that it actually belongs to a distinct family, Stenostiridae.

The name 'Generalife' means 'garden of the architect'. The Generalife is located on the hill Cerro del Sol, adjacent to the Alhambra. Originally it was most probably an architect's house that later passed to the Arab kings and was remodelled. The Generalife is composed of a series of large gardens, where every corner holds a novelty and a pleasant surprise for the eyes, with a minimum of obtrusive buildings.
The Patio is the true heart of the Generalife. Here, Arab sensuality becomes sparse yet spiritual.
The most beautiful and striking features in the Generalife gardens are the plants, the water with its continuous interplay with light, and its sounds.
The name Gardenia is a girl's name meaning "Garden's flower". More uncommon and powerful than garden varieties like Rose and Lily. Named for Scottish botanist Dr Alexander Garden.

Though named "Common" this babbler is anything but common in our state. This is hard to find babbler whose habitat is grasslands and dry farmlands found scattered across the state. The bird doesn't sound like a babbler even whose calls are often a cacophony of coarse noises. Its behaviour too is unlike other babblers which are social birds and often found in groups of 3-4 or more. But this Common Babbler is often sighted alone or in a pair at best.
We sighted a pair of them on the edge of a hill on a dangerously steep slope and think there could be 2 of them in the area based on calls heard.
Thank you so much in advance for your views, feedback and faves.

"Named for naturalist Alexander Wilson, who first described it, Wilson's Warbler is a colorful, widespread, relatively well known warbler of riparian, meadow, and humid forest thickets. Its combined breeding, migration, and wintering ranges cover nearly the entire North American continent. It has become something of a flagship species for the conservation of neotropical migrants and is considered a priority in several conservation plans because of widespread population declines and threats to its habitat."

Thistle is the common name of a group of flowering plants characterised by leaves with sharp prickles on the margins, mostly in the family Asteraceae. Prickles can also occur all over the plant – on the stem and on the flat parts of the leaves. These prickles are an adaptation that protects the plant from being eaten by herbivores. Typically, an involucre with a clasping shape similar to a cup or urn subtends each of a thistle's flowerheads. The comparative amount of spininess varies dramatically by species. For example, Cirsium heterophyllum has minimal spininess while Cirsium spinosissimum is the opposite. Typically, species adapted to dry environments have greater spininess. The term thistle is sometimes taken to mean precisely those plants in the tribe Cardueae (synonym: Cynareae), especially the genera Carduus, Cirsium, and Onopordum. However, plants outside this tribe are sometimes called thistles, and when this is done, "thistles" would form a polyphyletic group. A thistle is the floral emblem of Scotland and Lorraine, as well as the emblem of the Encyclopædia Britannica. Biennial thistles are particularly noteworthy for their high wildlife value, producing such things as copious floral resources for pollinators, nourishing seeds for birds like the goldfinch, foliage for butterfly larvae, and down for the lining of birds' nests. 12710

It is a perennial shrub or tree, very popular in tropical landscaping, which has a woody, erect, branched and thorny stem.
The inflorescences are composed of red, orange-red, pinkish-red or yellow flowers, depending on the variety, all characterized by long stamens. Flowering occurs in spring and summer.
The fruits are of the vegetable type and appear in Autumn.
It should be grown in full sun or partial shade, but is tolerant of light cold, in subtropical or Mediterranean climates, becoming deciduous (loses its leaves in Winter). It is multiplied by seeds.
Some peoples use the plant as a medicinal plant, with anti-inflammatory properties, but care must be taken as it is a toxic plant, including abortifacient.

This is Phil (named after the late actor Phil Hartman) He and Philomena (female red-bellied woodpecker) are rarely in the yard at the same time but since the I have been placing peanuts in a few areas of the yard I have seen them here at the same time. I don't know if they are a couple, they don't seem to get along very well. The little Downy woodpecker that visits has also discovered the nuts and is visiting more frequently. I am a bit surprised but I have not seen a yellow-bellied sapsucker for several months. That does not necessarily mean they are not visiting, perhaps they are and I just have not seen them. Last year I saw as many as six sapsuckers in the yard at once.

Protea is both the botanical name and the English common name of a genus of South African flowering plants, sometimes also called sugarbushes or fynbos. The family is Proteaceae. In local tradition, the protea flower represents change and hope. The extraordinary richness and diversity of species characteristic of the Cape flora are thought to be caused in part by the diverse landscape, where populations can become isolated from each other and in time develop into separate species. The main vectors responsible for the transfer of pollen in protea cultivation are birds, insects, and wind. Some Protea species exhibit both self-pollination and cross-pollination as a method of reproduction. Cross-pollination is preferred, though, as a method of reproduction because it provides genetic diversity in the population. When cultivating proteas, breeders use hand pollination as a controlled method to transfer pollen from one flower to another. Proteas usually flower during spring. The general structure of their flower heads consists of a mass of flowers on a woody receptacle. The ovary is protected by the receptacle, thus is not seen when looking at the flower, but the anthers are present at the top of the flower, which can then easily transfer the pollen to the vectors. 48105
The appropriately named Steep Bank Creek originates in Oyster Creek more than 3 miles north as the Great Blue Heron flies, wends it way west, then east, passing by my subdivision 1 mile to the north where it drains Double Lake during heavy rains. It then flows on to Riverstone Wetlands where this photo was taken, then south for 4 more miles as that Heron flies where it joins the Brazos River, which flows into the Gulf of Mexico. That’s the optimistic scenario, of course. Speaking of that Great Blue Heron, here it is in Steep Bank Creek, Sugar Land, Texas.

The buzzard is usually spotted soaring through the sky on its broad wings, which can span up to 60 inches. It has a stocky frame with a body length of around 20 inches. The buzzard’s plumage is highly variable, with some individuals being dark brown, while others are almost entirely white. Generally, though, they are brown with a pale underside, and juveniles will be lighter. Info: Birdfact.com
