Overshadowed by her marginally higher neighbour, Bidean Nam Bian, to which she is connected by means of a col just a few meters too high to give her Munro status, Stob Coire nan Lochan is most often just used as a stopping point with a nice view for Munro baggers trying to bag Bidean and Sgreamhach in a wee round.
Too bad, in my opinion, as this mountain, still one of the tallest in Argyll, offers lots of interesting climbing on it's north face, and short walk-in times from the main road. The crags start at around 830-850 meters, and go right up to the pyramid-shaped summit.
Rock around here is mainly rhyolithic/andesite lava, with a granite core because this used to be the centre of the Glen Coe caldera. Because the centre of this ancient supervolcano (think Yellowstone) lies right around the Three Sisters, anyone interested in geology as well as climbing is going to have the time of their life here. The summit of Stob Coire nan Lochan consists almost entirely out of rare Andesite pillars, and the bottom of the coire itself cuts into the granite of the old magmachamber.
Nam Tso གནམ་མཚོ།
salt lake The lake lies at an elevation of 4,718 m, and has a surface area of 1,870 square kilometres. It is the highest salt lake in the world, and largest salt lake in the Tibet Autonomous Region. However, it is not the largest salt lake in the Tibetan Plateau. That title belongs to KokoNor མཚོ་སྔོན་ མཚོ་ཁྲི ་ཤོར་རྒྱལ་མོ་ (almost twice the size of Namtso). Namtso has five uninhabited islands of reasonable size, in addition to one or two rocky outcrops. The islands have been used for spiritual retreat by pilgrims who walk over the lake's frozen surface at the end of winter, carrying their food with them. They spend the summer there, unable to return to shore again until the water freezes the following winter. "Brothers Point" is a headland on the Trotternish Peninsula on the Isle of Skye. The Cottage we rented for this week was at the top of the path that led down to this enchanting place. There are dinosaur footprints embedded in rocks on the beach discovered here in 2018. We had a lovely daily walk with the dogs to this point with seals and lots of sea birds being the only company we found during our stay here.
I am surprised that this place is not really highlighted as a visitor attraction as the cliffs, views and setting would be seen as a real jewel elsewhere! The rocky table top of Brothers Point is the site of an ancient Fort. From the summit there is an excellent view in all directions particularly looking North to Kilt Rock and Mealt Falls.

Der Titel hätte auch lauten können: Das Schloss auf dem Mond...
Schloss Eisenberg (Zámek Jezeří) am Fuße des Erzgebirges zählt zu den faszinierendsten und gleichzeitig erschütterndsten Motiven Nordböhmens. Das Schloss erhielt seinen deutschen Namen nach dem Dorf Eisenberg, über dem es 1365-67 errichtet worden ist. Ein mittelalterlicher Eisenerzstollen am Besucherparkplatz kündet noch heute vom namensgebenden Bergbau. Interessant ist dabei, dass der heutige tschechische Name "Jezeří" (von tsch. 'jezero' = 'See') direkt Bezug auf die mittelalterliche Burg "Alt Seeberg" nimmt, die etwas mehr als ein Kilometer südlich des Schlosses auf einem knapp 700 m hohen schroffen Bergsporn lag. Der Name Seeberg stammte wohl daher, dass man hier eine faszinierende Sicht über das Nordböhmische Becken hatte, in welchem sich unterhalb der Burg weite Wiesen und Felder erstreckten, in denen zahlreiche Wasserflächen lagen. Der Name "Die Seewiesen" und der (inzwischen leider im Braunkohlentagebau verlorene) Ort Seestadtel kündeten davon, dass diese Wasserflächen zu bestimmten Zeiten vielleicht eine beachtliche Ausdehnung erreicht haben. Kurios ist allerdings, dass die tschechische Bezeichnung der Burg "Starý Žeberk" lediglich eine phonetische Umwandlung des deutschen Namens "Seeberg" ist, während der Berg selbst "Jezeří" genannt wird. Die Burg in der spektakulären, aber wohl nicht sehr wohnlichen Lage, wurde nach Mitte des 14. Jahrhunderts durch die Herren von Seestadtl (Ervěnice) aufgegeben, da nunmehr in günstigerer Lage über dem Dorf Eisenberg eine neue Burg erbaut worden war. An dessen Stelle wurde im 16. Jahrhundert durch Nikolaus Hochhauser von Hochhaus ein Renaissanceschloss erbaut. Nachdem dieses im Dreißigjährigen Krieg massiv beschädigt wurde, kam es ab 1690 durch die Familie Lobkowicz zum Neubau im Barockstil, wofür der Baumeister Giovanni Battista Alliprandi engagiert wurde. Das prunkvoll ausgestattete Schloss verfügte auch über ein Schlosstheater, welches ab Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts zahlreiche Kunstinteressierte aus Nah und Fern anlockte. Zu den Besuchern zählte neben dem mit dem Schlossherrn befreundeten Beethoven auch Goethe, nach welchem der im Bild zu sehende Aussichtspunkt "Geothesitz" (Goethovo sedátko) benannt wurde.
Nach der Enteignung der Familie Lobkowicz gehörte das Schloss dem tschechoslowakischen Staat, der bei den Planungen für die Eröffnung des Tagebaus auch eine Sprengung des Bauwerks erwog. Eine Bürgerinitiative konnte dies glücklicherweise verhindern und ab 1988 konnten sogar Restaurierungsarbeiten erfolgen. Seit 1996 ist Eisenberg wieder im Besitz der Familie Lobkowicz und das Schloss ist zu den Öffnungszeiten für Besucher zugänglich. Faszinierend und erschreckend zugleich ist der Blick über das Schloss in die Mondlandschaft des Braunkohlentagebaus, wo sich eins blühende Wiesen und Felder erstreckten...
So ist der landläufige Name der alten Pfarrkirche im Bergisch Gladbacher Ortsteil Refrath.
Der verputzte Bruchsteinbau aus der Zeit um 1200 steht auf einem ummauerten, aufgelassenen Friedhof. Im Kern ist er ein Rechtecksaal mit flacher Decke und stark eingezogenem Triumphbogen. In der ersten Hälfte des 13. Jahrhunderts wurde ein größerer Chor in der Breite des Schiffes angefügt und ein gedrungener Westturm angebaut. Bei der Erneuerung von 1765 bis 1766 wurde im Chorscheitel eine Sakristei errichtet. Nach dem Bau der neuen Pfarrkirche von 1864 bis 1871 verfiel die alte Kirche und wurde von 1907 bis 1909 wiederhergestellt. Im Schiff befinden sich neben den nachträglich eingebrochenen Rechteckfenstern noch jeweils zwei der ursprünglichen winzigen Rundbogenfenster. Reste gotischer Wandmalereien aus der Zeit um 1430 bis 1440 wurden 1908 im Chorraum freigelegt und zuletzt 1983 restauriert.

Cette ville aujourd’hui peuplée de 20.000 habitants, était considérée jusqu’au milieu des années 1990, comme l’un des paradis terrestres. Je n’y suis malheureusement pas venu lors de mon premier voyage dans les années 1990.
De paradis terrestre, Vang-Vieng s’est muée en enfer touristique en moins de deux ans, sous les assauts des investisseurs chinois et vietnamiens, attirés par un décor de rêve autour de la rivière Nam-Song, cernée de majestueuses montagnes calcaires truffées de grottes plus ou moins sacrées.
Le tourisme de masse s’est abattu du jour au lendemain sur cette jolie vallée qui attirait depuis quelques années tous les junkies du monde. Conséquence, ce un lieu est devenu peu fréquentable avec un fort taux de criminalité.
Vang-Vieng a vite été rebaptisée " le cancer du tourisme " dans les années 2000. Mais en 2012, après avoir largement profité de la corruption, le gouvernement laotien à été obligé de mettre un terme à cette débauche, peu compatible avec l’image qu’il voulait donner du pays.
Aujourd’hui, la région est redevenue plus apaisée et sécurisée. C’est toujours un haut lieu du tourisme avec ses quads pétaradants, perturbant la tranquillité des campagnes environnantes. Mais il est possible de pratiquer un tourisme plus respectueux de l’environnement en parcourant la région à pied ou à vélo.
Vang-Vieng, the lost paradise

This city, now populated by 20,000 inhabitants, was considered until the mid-1990s as one of the paradises of earth. Unfortunately, I did not stay there on my first trip in the 1990s.
From earthly paradise, Vang-Vieng has turned into hell in less than two years, under the onslaught of Chinese and Vietnamese investors, attracted by a dream setting around the Nam-Song river, surrounded by majestic limestone mountains dotted with caves more or less sacred.
Mass tourism swept over this pretty valley overnight, which for several years had attracted junkies around the world. As a result, this place has become infrequent with a high crime rate.
Vang-Vieng was quickly renamed "the cancer of tourism" in the early 2000s. But in 2012, after having profited greatly from corruption, the Laotian government was forced to put an end to this debauchery, which was hardly compatible with the image he wanted to give of the country.
Today, the region has once again become more peaceful and secure. It is still a hotspot for tourism with its backlashing quads, disturbing the tranquility of the surrounding countryside. But it is possible to practice more environmentally friendly tourism by exploring the region on foot or by bicycle.

Rubha nam Brathairean, also known as Brothers Point, is a hidden treasure on the Isle of Skye. It is a dramatic headland marking the easternmost point of Trotternish. Nobody seems certain of the origin of the name, but it is most often said to have been a place where monks lived and worshiped in safety more than a thousand years ago.

In diesem befindet sich das sogenannte "Akazienwäldchen", einen lichten Robinienhain, der schon vor der Anlage des Parks vorhanden war. Unter den Bäumen wachsen an vielen Stellen Winterlinge, die hier genügend Sonnenlicht bekommen.
Der Name des Parks leitet sich von einem stehenden Gewässer ab, eigentlich zwei kleinen Teichen, die aber durch einen Graben miteinander verbunden sind. Um dieses im mittleren Bereich von Marzahn gelegenen Gewässer herum wurde ein ausgedehnter Park geschaffen. Unter den Bäumen wachsen an vielen Stellen Winterlinge, die hier genügend Sonnenlicht bekommen.
The name of the park is derived from a standing body of water, actually two small ponds, which are connected by a ditch. An extensive park was created around this body of water in the centre of Marzahn. It contains the so-called ‘acacia grove’, a sparse robinia grove that already existed before the park was created. Winter aconites grow under the trees in many places and get plenty of sunlight here.
