Chinese traveler, Buddhist pilgrim I-Tsing who arrived in India in 673, described the monastery at Nalanda as having eight halls and three hundred apartments. He said there was only one gate by which to enter the compound, which was in the south wall and attended by a gatekeeper. Strangers who came to the university were screened with questions by this keeper in order to determine the extent of their previous education before they were allowed to enter. I-Tsing reported that only two or three visitors out of every ten managed to pass this difficult test.
Although Nalanda is one of the places distinguished as having been blessed by the presence of the Buddha, it later became particularly renowned as the site of the great monastic university of the same name , which was to become the crown jewel of the development of Buddhism in India. The name may derive from one of Shakyamuni's former births , when he was a king whose capital was here. Nalanda was one of his epithets meaning "insatiable in giving."

Temple 3, Nalanda Gupta period, late 6th - early 7th century AD Temple 3 stands over 100 feet high. Its elevated stupa was accessed by a staircase, seen here, on the north side of the monument. Smaller stupas surround the platform, and original plasterwork is preserved on the NE and SE corners. The temple underwent seven stages of remodelling between 300 BC and 1100 AD. The great stupa was built in the Gupta period. It is this (fifth) layer that is mostly visible today, although traces of the other layers can also be followed.

Honorable Ladies M.L. Anong and Vichandra
Patrons of the World Tipiṭaka, Ladies and Gentlemen :
The Pāḷi Tipiṭaka is for we Buddhists the font of our religion. It is where we get our ethics, our world view and our philosophy from. Each Buddhist Culture reads the Tipiṭaka in their own language or at least in their own script. But with Buddhism now spreading to the West there is a need for an accurate and reliable edition of the Tipiṭaka in Roman script.
Of course the Tipiṭaka has been published in Roman script before but all these editions have various errors or drawbacks. For example, I was looking at the first volume of Fausboll's edition of the Jataka published in 1877 by the Pali Text Society and noticed that it has four pages of corrections and additions and that when this volume was reprinted in 2000 these corrections and additions had still not been included in the text.
This is not to disparage the dedication and hard work of earlier scholars but merely to point out that there is still room for improvements. And this edition in Roman script definitely is an improvement. Indeed it is a work of the highest order and a truly magnificent monument to Her Royal Highness Princess Galyani Vadhana in whose memory this gift is made to our and other societies and institutions, and to Mrs. Maniratana Bunnag, the founder of the World Tipiṭaka Project. In preparing this new edition advanced computer-controlling procedures have been used in several dimensions to ensure complete accuracy such as, double-cross checking, from the revision stage through to the artwork, layout and printing.
Most importantly, in the World Tipiṭaka Edition, the Pāḷi text with special diacritical marks has been printed by using an open-standard typeface which is user-friendly and easy to copy into any electronic format for references. I noticed also that the layout, design, binding and paper used in each volume are all of the highest quality. This new edition of the Tipiṭaka is not just a major achievement from the point of view of Buddhist scholarship,it is also aesthetically pleasing, which is only appropriate for an edition of the sacred scriptures.
In our society it will be treasured and used. On behalf of the Buddha Dhamma Mandala Society of Singapore we would like to thank Col. Suradhaj Bunnag, and all the Patrons for all the help you have given us and other recipients.

This man’s devotion or serenity enchanted me – I was watching him for a long time.
There’s a buddhist centre near my old house – the Nalanda – a centre based on sri lankan teachings. Different budhist practices from different countries have slightly different styles of workship – the Tibetian one is more similar to hinduism where Buddha is portrayed in various forms and devi plays a major role. I never found the time to go there till on Wesak Day, last Saturday.
It’s a very new centre and I was told it was started to offer students in the local univ (I live in a univ town) a place to workship and bond. What I liked about the place was they were very welcoming. Lights and flowers and food was given to all.
I’ve always loved the serenity of Buddha, I fell in love with one particular statue in chiang mai last year and was sitting in front of him forever. I’m also prone to sit and enjoy the chants of the workshipers – very soothing.
Few years back we had the opportunity to perform in a dance drama on Sidharta. Upon seeing our performance, the main buddhist vihara in KL invited us to perform again on the steps of their temple on a full moon day. It was one of our most memorable performance as there was just an amazing serenity to it facing the moon and performing to the world.

Located in Bihar, India, the ruins of Nalanda University mark the site of one of the world’s oldest residential universities, dating back to the 5th century CE. Once a renowned center for learning in Buddhist studies, philosophy, mathematics, and medicine, Nalanda attracted scholars from across Asia. The remains of monasteries, temples, and manuscripts reflect its grandeur before it was destroyed in the 12th century. Today, it stands as a UNESCO World Heritage Site symbolizing India’s ancient academic excellence.
