One of the favorite modes of transportation in the Philippines. Jeepneys were patterned from US military jeeps during World War 11 excellently used on rough roads. This photo was taken along Magsaysay in Naga City while passing by a relative of my wife.

This is the original image of the Nuestra Senora de Penafrancia commissioned by Miguel Robles de Covarrubias in the 1700s. A dog was killed to obtain blood to be used to paint the image . The dead dog was thrown in the Naga River but later was seen alive swimming in the river towards his owner's residence. This was the first miracle in Nueva Caceres which happened during the Spanish period. One would notice that the face of the child Jesus is already erased. This resulted after the image was stolen in the 1980s. It is said that the image was buried in the ground without any protection.

English: Capiz Window

The outer shell of the windowpane oyster, Placuna placenta, is called the capiz shell. Today it is used, primarily in the Philippines, in the manufacture of lampshades, trays, mats, and bowls.* But during the colonial period, the most prominent use was in windows such as this one: Villafrancia Ancestral House in Naga City.

The image of the Divino Rostro at the Peñafrancia Shrine, Naga City, Philippines.

History: The Divino Rostro painting depicts the legendary Veronica, clad in gold, holding a white veil on which is imprinted Christ's face. In 1882, cholera struck Manila, while Casimiro Herrero was bishop of Caceres. Before the year was over, cholera had spread to Bicol. The vicar Pedro de la Torre, a native of Osa de la Vega in Spain, suggested to Herrero to enshrine an image of the Divino Rostro in his posession in the Metropolitan Cathedral of Naga for the duration of the epidemic. The bishop agreed to the vicar's suggestion and ordered also that prayers to Nuestra Señora de Peñafrancia be made. On August 26, 1882, both images were enshrined in the cathedral. Since then, the two images (Nuestra Senora de Penafrancia and the Divino Rostro) were inseparable and were carried aloft in the Peñafrancia procession.

The Divino Rostro in the posession of the vicar is a copy of the painting enshrined in the parish church of Osa de la Vega in Spain. The inhabitants of Osa de la Vega turned to the Divino Rostro for protection specially in 1834, 1853 and 1855 when the cholera epidemic struck Spain.

The feast of Our Lady of Peñafrancia is celebrated on the third Saturday of September in Naga City, Bicol Philippines. All roads and routes will lead to Naga City in Camarines Sur where six million Bicolanos from here and abroad will flock to that progressive city to pay honor to the Virgin of Peñafrancia, miraculous patroness of the Bicol Region. Bicolanos from all walks of life will be in Naga City to meet their relatives and partidarios, share food, drinks, and prayers with them, and most of all, to pay homage and make thanksgiving to the Virgin of Peñafrancia, whom the Bicolanos fondly call Ina. Viva la Virgen, they will shout to high heavens. The feast day is headed by a novena, nine days of prayer, in honor of the Virgin. On the first day, the image of the Virgin, a copy of the Madonna in Peñafrancia, Spain, is brought from its shrine to the Naga Cathedral where the novena is held. On the last day, the image is returned to her shrine following the Naga River route. The colorful evening procession is lit by thousands of candles from followers in boats escorting the image. When the flatboat reaches its destination, the devotees shout "Viva la Virgen" (Long live the Virgin!) and the image is carried back in a procession to the cathedral.

Millions of Bicolanos will once again show to the whole Christian world their strong faith and loyalty to their Heavenly Mother. amongst triumphant sounding shouts of Viva la Virgen , Bicolanos and pilgrims, with lighted candles in their hands, will kneel on the ground and bow their heads in prayer as the colorful fluvial procession carrying the Virgin plows through the Bicol River in downtown Naga.

A multicolored pagoda carrying the images/icons of the Virgin of Peñafrancia and the Divino Rostro will pass through the Bicol River. Male, sunburned devotees of the Virgin will adhere to the huge pagoda in a heartwarming display of faith and devotion. Actually, the fluvial procession marks the return of the Virgin from the Naga Metropolitan Cathedral to her home shrine at the Basilica. Upon its arrival, the Virgin will be received in formal religious rites by Roman Catholic dignitaries of the Bicol Region led by Cardinal Jose T. Sanchez.
