On April 14, 1921 the first Fokker F.III of the KLM entered service. At that day eight Fokker F.IIIs were delivered and registered as H-NABG to H-NABN. With the Fokker F.III, H-NABH the English pilot Gordon Olley inaugurated the air service Amsterdam – Rotterdam – London.
Ivan Smirnoff lost his Fokker F.III, H-NABH after an emergency landing on Goodwin Sands on October 19th, 1923. It was caused by an engine failure and the only solution was an emergency landing on the Goodwin Sands, but the tide was coming in. Seen by the crew of a passing coal cargo ship "Primo" the four were rescued at the very last moment, but the aircraft was engulfed by the waves. Smirnoff was solemnly granted the honorary title "Count the Goodwins'.
