A behind the scenes photo of my Yellow Flower Study series of close up photographs of a yellow flower in a floral arrangement.
Two Canon 580EX Speedlite flashes mounted on stands and difused with Gary Fong Cloud LightSpheres, to the right and left of the camera right off the camera lens. Flashes set in manual and triggered by a Canon ST-E2 Wireless Transmitter on the hot shoe of a Canon 20D with a 100mm f/2.8 macro lens attached and remote shutter release cable.
NOTE: This photo made it into Flickr's 'Explore" as one of the top five hundred most interesting photos on a particular day, which makes me somewhat sad as the actual resulting photos didn't make it, ha! You can see all of my photo's that have made it into the Flickr Explore pages here.

Old man Wrigley lived in that white house
Down the street where I grew up
Momma used to send me over with things
We struck a friendship up
I spent a few long summers out on his old porch swing
Said he was in the war when in the navy
Lost his wife, lost his baby
Broke down and asked him one time
How ya keep from goin' crazy
He said, "I'll see my wife and son in just a little while"
I asked him what he meant
He looked at me and smiled, said
I raise my hands, bow my head
I'm findin' more and more truth in the words written in red
They tell me that there's more to life, than just what I can see
Oh I believe, hmm
Few years later I was off at college
Talkin' to mom on the phone one night
Gettin' all caught up on the gossip
The ins and outs of the small town life
She said, "Oh, by the way son
Old man Wrigley has died"
Later on that night, I laid there thinkin' back
Thought about a couple long-lost summers
I didn't know whether to cry or laugh
If there was ever anybody deserved a ticket to the other side
It'd be that sweet old man who looked me in the eye, said
I raise my hands, bow my head
I'm findin' more and more truth in the words written in red
They tell me that there's more to life than just what I can see
I can't quote the book, the chapter or the verse
You can't tell me it all ends in a slow ride in a hearse
You know I'm more and more convinced, the longer that I live
Yeah, this can't be, no, this can't be, no, this can't be all there is
Lord, I raise my hands, bow my head
Oh, I'm findin' more and more truth in the words written in red
They tell me that there's more to this
Than just what I can see (just what I can see)
I believe
Oh, I, I believe
I believe
(I believe) hmm
(I believe) I believe
(I believe) I believe (I believe)
(I believe) oh, I believe
(I believe,)
(I believe)

My set up these days when wandering around. I don't use that chart on the back any more since realizing that my instant film Fuji FP-100C is self-terminating and I don't have to time the development, just leave it until later.
Chris arrived right as Clint was in the middle of determining the kHz sample rate of various AVI files of X-Men:TAS (1990s) commercials. I'm using my "allfiles mv" script, which creates a text file that is the names of all files in a folder. It also runs them through a 1600-line perl script that executes hundreds of regular expression-driven (and file inspection-driven) rename rules, and then has the user edit the text file. Often with many files in the same set, you can use the macro function of your text file to do a complex renaming with one keypress (or less, if you hold it down for multiple files) per file. You just can't beat that efficiency when it's happening. But I never figured out how to get the kHz audio sample rate myself. And WinXP can't figure it out either -- only Win2K. So I get to either violate my naming conventions forAVI files (I don't do this for MKV files nowadays), or open every file up and look and see. Fun. Anyway, after editing the filenames, the allfiles mv script compares the 2 text files, and automatically renames them. It gets a little hairy if you accidentally use the same filename twice, but you can fix it in another window. This script has saved me 100s of hours. Or, to look at it another way: In equal time, my files are superiorly named. Of course a lot of this gets ruined when you deal with the filename limit on burned DVDs...

BACKSTORY: Chris H came to visit. We had made tentative plans to hang out on Thursday. Chris ended up drinking all day and had to take a cab to our house because he was so drunk. He had just bought a camera that day, so he was taking a lot of pictures. It was a good thing, because he didn't remember most of the evening, and the pictures helped fill in the blanks.
Here's my art kit. I think it's worthwhile to note what isn't in it. There's no ruler in here, no eraser (mostly because I lost it, actually), no geometry tools. I think I feel the lack of geometry tools pretty keenly, but it's not a bad kit, as is.
Upgraded the kit lens to the 18-105mm lens for a set up that provides more scope....it looks a beast on the little D3100 though! Especially at 105mm like this!

Yep, I can play Sup Com on the Home Theater. The projector is an HD model, and my new HTPC has an X6800 and a 8800GTX video card, so plenty of horsepower there. :)
The Penny Arcade art was a gift from Mike Krahulik and Jerry Holkins. But this isn't just static art -- it's a fully functional set of DDR pads.
Netherlands, Rotterdam, Maasboulevard, along the route of the last Wednesday Night Skate of 2007.
This is the setup with which I intended to make at least one interesting photo of the long queue of skaters passing by this photogenic spot. However, let's not beat around the bush: I failed miserably. I made a whole series, but all shots were horribly blurred.
What you see is my modified Telesteps telescopic photo ladder. It has a modification (not clearly visible here) that allows me to screw a Manfrotto ballhead onto it, making this a very high 'tripod.' An engineer friend of mine designed and constructed the mod.
For this occasion, I had also taped my Manfrotto monopod (right) and tripod (left) onto the top part of the ladder. My old manual Metz flash in the softbox on the left, the Canon Speedlite 580EX on the right. Both flashes triggered with a dual ETTL cord from the 1D (the first) in the middle.
I received great cooperation from the skaters when they passed by. Many cheerful faces and waving. So my sign seemed to work. People really enjoyed that somebody was taking their picture at this location, almost near the finish.
My intention was to make shots with the dusky, cloudy sky in the background and the skaters lit by the 2 flashes in the foreground.
This setup seemed to work. The 2" LCD of the 1D showed quite evenly lit takes.
However, what I did not notice during the shoot was that I had chosen an exposure time (1/60), which was WAY too long for this type of action.
At 9pm, tt had gotten dark much faster than I had hoped, also because of the overcast sky. ISO 800 and aperture 5.6, and 1/60 seemed to be the only option for the shot I wanted to make. When I got home and reviewed the photos, I had to hang my head in shame. The results were disastrous. Every single take was terribly unsharp from extreme motion blur.
Skaters (like e.g. marathon runners) go very.fast. I could and should have known this, but was too eager to realize my original idea for the shot.
A series of shots of the skater parade taken one hour earlier with 1/250 already showed unacceptable motion blur.
This was the story of my failed (first) attempt to make a cool Rotterdam Wednesday Night Skate photo. I shall not give up. Next year, I want to give it another try. With more experience, a hopefully bit more light and exposure times of 1/800 or shorter.

Long lens shot of the Gadget Sub Station and part of my desk (took it this way to flatten out the lines -- less pin and barrel with a long shot like this).
My setup:
1. ExploreScientific ED127 Apo Triplet Refractor

TiVo, Xbox360, iPodVideo, Lord of the Rings, Return of the King, Halo 2, two wireless Xbox360 controllers, moderately large television; a.k.a. my happy place ;)
Hero shot of the console shelf when I first built it. I've since then gotten an Elite 360, and retired the rest of the crew.
This is a PSP stand that I designed and built from scrap aluminum when the PSP was first released. This is the prototype. There are actually 4 others that I build for various friends in different materials and finishes. (check my sets if you are interested)
This collection of shots includes the new HP BlackBird 002. Pictured here is an early prototype that I helped field-test. It looked fantastic, even for a prototype.
