My dear friends,

Today, 22nd September, is WORLD RHINO DAY. It is an opportunity for people all over the world to take a stand against rhino poaching and the illegal trade in rhino horn. It is all about spreading the word: Rhino horn has no medicinal value, despite the long held belief to the contrary, and is not a cure for cancer. However rhino horn is still sought after and mainly in the East. Rhinos are dying for nobody’s benefit – except that of the criminals involved in the poaching rings.

South Africa is custodian to over 80% of the world’s rhino. From 2000-2007 about 12 rhinos were poached each year in South Africa. Last year 333 were slaughtered. So far in 2011, about 300 rhinos have already been poached. Rhino poaching sees also sharp rise in other countries.

Extinction is not an option: Help Save Our Rhino!

Rhinos belong to all of us. Their survival is more threatened than ever before.

We need to raise awareness to fight the battle against their extinction.

Make your voice heard if you think that they are worth saving.

Some ideas to get involved:

1. Join one of the events today, e.g.

www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=224095080972284

www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=266471793371719

www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=163128317103866

2. Spare a thought for the almost 300 rhinos that have been viciously slaughtered for their horns in South Africa this year.

3. Make a poster (or several) and display today (or even longer). Put them up in your car windows, shop windows, schools, business - wherever they will be seen.

4. Communicate (e-mail, Facebook, twitter, blog, sms etc.) your objections to rhino being poached and spread the word that rhino horn has no medicinal value at all! The rhinos are dying for no good reason. Speak about it where- & whenever you contact people, again & again. People do not know (much) about it, particularly outside of Southern Africa.

5. There are lots of petitions online. Please sign & share them, at least the most important ones:

apps.facebook.com/petitions/6/moratorium-on-rhino-hunt-2011/

www.wildernessfoundation.co.za/index.php?option=com_proje... (PLEASE WATCH THE VIDEO ON THIS SITE & SIGN THE PETITION)

www.thepetitionsite.com/1/africa-geographics-stop-killing...

action.humanesociety.org/site/MessageViewer?em_id=24931.0...

6. Circulate this e-mail as widely as possible

7. If you are in South Africa:

Buy a “rhino” bag at your nearest Woolworths store. 10 Rand from the sale of every bag will go to the WWF for rhino conservation.

Get a MyPlanet card at any Woolworths store or online at www.myschool.co.za/schools/myvillage-myplanet .Choose EWT MyPlanet Rhino fund as your beneficiary. Every time you shop at Woolworths, or any of the partners, a percentage of your purchase will be donated to the fund at no cost to you.

8. Particularly if you are not in South Africa:

Inform your newspaper, radio station, local zoo, museum etc. – ask them to cover the rhino poaching crisis and to keep up with this issue

9. Take the rhino poaching crisis in the school. Here you find information resources for use by teacher/youth leaders: www.rhinos-irf.org/teachers/

10. Organise a fundraising event for rhino anti poaching. Some ideas: sponsored walk, bridge party, golf day, raffle, auction

11. If you want to donate money: Please be wary of potentially fraudulent fundraisers. Always look for a Non Profit Organisation (NPO) and Public Benefit Organisation (PBO) number, ask questions about how donations will be spent and what percentage of the donation goes towards actual conservation work.

Here you can find a selection of good organizations: www.facebook.com/notes/5050-community/these-are-a-selecti...

12. Stay informed, e.g. by checking the following websites:

www.stoprhinopoaching.com/

www.rhinos-irf.org/

www.savingrhinos.org/

www.rhinoconservation.org/

and/or the different rhino pages on Facebook

13. If you want to help the rhinos on a spiritual level, here is a prayer by my wonderful friend Anna Breytenbach that humans can say and intentions we can hold:

“Rhinos are ancient and wise, and have a rightful place on earth. They survive in the wild through patience, silence and solidity. They are invisible to those who would harm them. Rhinos and their young have the space and human understanding they need to thrive. They are held in peace and love. May it be so.”

Please do not stop getting involved before the rhino poaching has been brought to a permanent end and a sustainable population of rhinos is established for the benefit of current & future generations.

THANK YOU. For the Love of Rhinos!

I always loved school and learning, and I love learning up to now.

This essay from the 3rd Grade, mentions the word "Μαθαίνει" which I didn't spell correctly, so in order to memorize it I had to write it twice on the left side.

Στο σχολείο όλα τα παιδιά μαθαίνουν πολλά πράγματα. Εμένα μου αρέσει πολύ το σχολείο μου.

in this terrible building i've spent 4 of my school's years!

This happens in your worst dream: everyone has left the examroom, you are the only one left and you notice that you didn't make that exam.......

I finally tracked down the scale which I've been looking all over for. It's unfortunate that the only weight that's removable is the large one though. Bandai could have really knocked it out of the park if they were all separate pieces. I don't know what the meter thingy is supposed to be, it came with magnets, so it must measure something that's magnetic? And of course, what miniature collection is complete without a mini skeleton? LOL I think I have finally gotten all the science related minis I wanted. Until somebody comes up with something else. :-)

I'm not really sure of the name of this set, but I think it's one of the coolest ideas for a miniature I've seen. I wish the rocks were a little more realistic, but the fossil is great. I decided to use the Re-ment Elementary School set with it in the picture just because it's all scientific :-)

Everything is going well, and I will go to Chengdu as a Volunteer.

Grace Najjar on the set of the SAT-7 KIDS program 'My School'.

SAT-7 is providing the hope that education offers through an “on-air school” for children who cannot go to a physical classroom. Satellite TV is able to reach into refugee communities, educating an unlimited number of children in a way that overburdened states and aid agencies cannot.

Initially aimed at children aged four to eight, 'My School' (“Madrasati” in Arabic) broadcasts every weekday, providing engaging, interactive lessons in Arabic, English, maths and science based on the Syrian and Lebanese curriculums. Each episode is hosted by three fully-qualified Syrian teachers, who conduct lessons in an attractive and brightly coloured classroom setting using fun songs and animation to engage with their viewers.

Such beautiful colours.

Secondary school #3 in Neftekamsk, Bashkortostan. In 83-th century, last year I finished a decade of training in this school. At the time, it seemed to me that all the bad things were behind us...

Средняя школа #3 в Нефтекамске. В восемьдесят третьем году прошлого века я закончил учебу в этой школе. Тогда мне казалось что все плохое осталось позади...

This photo is not edited, taken with a canon g-11 about 1.5 years ago. My dad recently passed away of cancer and I miss him terribly. This is a fond memory that I remember him sharing with me. :)

My first school in America. My Junior High School. My first September here 28 years ago. I had never worked so hard in school before… 1 & 1/2 years down, first in pride key chains & certificates every quarter… poetry contests, writing contests, best essays in school, best math student, high 90s in every subject… everything came down to one disappointment… High School… Any distant school as a newcomer to the country, my family was out of the question, and every single one of my non-zone schools rejected me. I remember my English class when, after another 100 (grade), the entire class opened HS acceptance letters… Every single school I applied to rejected me… Mama said Stuyvesant High School was out of the question because in New York, just like in the Soviet Union, every school was the same.

To say that I felt disappointment and pain is not to say anything. To see me showing any sensitive emotions in public & tears was rare. There I was, “Tatyana,” the teacher’s pet, supposedly one of the smartest kids with seven rejections! Most of my feelings as a teenager came out in anger & sarcasm. And I cried in front of the whole class. After that, I developed the “I study when I feel like it " attitude.” When I liked a class, I did well. When I didn’t … I didn’t care. Now, looking back, I believe that the worst punishment we can get is punishment by ourselves. I take failures & rejections very close to heart. I feel as if nothing I do works out, and life is a mess. But there are also other sides when. I almost got kicked out of college, and 15 years ago (9/24/2008) I got my PharmD license not just by passing but also by getting almost the highest grade in New York State. I believe most of us feel that success comes after the first trial and give up after the first bump on the road. I’m the definition of many mistakes, but also I’m the story when one can go through povery, abuse, anxiety, depression, failure, failure in school and still finish as one of the best! If one thing I could make children see (and sometimes nowadays too) that one failure or unfortunate event or even does not define who you are… fall down, stay there as long as you’ll stay, get up and show (not the people or the world) but show yourself that this is your life and you can do better (not for your ego) but because you appreciate life & chances it has given you!

I have no idea how he knows when I need him. We can go weeks without speaking, and then, when my blue moods threaten to turn black, he will show up and tell me my moods are

cerulean

cobalt

and suddenly the blue will not seem so dark, more like the color of a noon-bright sky.

-The Realm of Possibility

It's been a while since I've added to this set.

I took this before school at my parking spot. Hahah.

Yeah, it's a walk.

A typical Portuguese house.

This was my school yard. We played here when we were not at class. In those years the rain was rare. So we played most of the year.

The old nunnery (convent) of the former Holy Trinity Parish… I am class of 1958. I do not have many fond memories of the Ladies that once lived here! The old school building is to the right.

Holy Trinity was one of the first Catholic churches built in Indiana. Built 1852 and destroyed by fire in 1975.

So last week my Headteacher was shortlisted AND WON, the Head teacher of the year award for the East of England.

Tuesday I got free champers, entertained by Rory here, (hes an impressionist) and to have dinner all because my school was shortlisted as Best primary School (in the COUNTRY) We didnt win (boo) but the judges gave us a special mention, saying they were very impressed, I think we gave the winners a run for their money, and anyhow, we are printed in the WINNERS booklet, so thats good enough!

It was a fabulous event, with some very great work being given high recognition. My head and only 5 of the (ahem key?) staff went along, well she took me, didnt she??
