給一個心碎的女孩

5.05.16: Despite early reviews about the weight factor, the lure of the 600 is compelling me to order one. B&H actually has them in stock, but are restricted by Sony from shipping to Canada! So pre-orders here may be available anywhere from mid-May til the end of May.

If I can get one before a trip to Alaska this month I can test the cam for the weight factor as well as the range ( I gave up on DSLR cams because of the lens changing and weight around my neck, plus travel hassles).

Pre-ordered today.

11.05.16: Noticed that B&H are showing that their next shipment is expected July 1st. Still no indication from local shops other than mid-May to the end of May. Oh well, the M2 will get a workout instead.

21.05.16: The cam shipped a few days after embarking to Alaska, and has been sitting at Post Office:(

Borowed my wife's E-M1 and lens for long shots. Further confirmed my shooting includes landscapes @ 600.

Off to the Post Office.

Interesting re IS:

www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/4004612.

Yes it is heavier, but I can live with the added weight considering this lens, from what I have seen so far. Weather permitting, I will be RVing next week and this cam will get a workout.

22.05.16: Posted test shots OOC Raw. Tripod, monopod and handheld. Comparison shots with the OM-D + 75-300 (150-600). RX Sharper IMO. 70 year old hands = more shake, so monopod will be used more often than not when at long end.

23.05.16: Pixel peeping on 27" screen = very good IMO.

Ordering circ pol and Sony case. Applying screen protector today. The RX1 staying home. 100m4 as backup.

30.05.16: Got back yesterday, Got about 100 shots in between rain, sun and showers.

1. Several times I found that I had moved the focus mode from S to C, when holding the lens with my left hand.

2. The cam underexposes by 3.

3. Found Expand Flexible Spot interesting.

4. Does not allow to view shots or menu unless fully on (a feature that I like on the RX100M3/4.

I am happy with the 600mm shots, especially when sunny. Posting last week's shots, having processed them in C1.

All uploaded shots are full size.

15.06.16: Last Saturday I shot about 50 soccer photos with most as keepers. While not a fast paced game, I found that continous focus worked well for the most part.

www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/4016022

17.06.16: RVing next week and both the RX10M3 and RX1 will be with me.

1.07.16: While shooting in the Squirrel Bay area I heard the first jet behind me. By the time I turned around, needless to say it was long gone. However, there was a second jet, and I managed to shoot 3 shots, one of which was a keeper. I have to say that the cam lens fully extended, focused and captured this shot faster than I thought it would. Particularly since I had/have problems while focusing on white clouds.

I pixel peeped (?) at 200% and cropped @ 1:1 (next Shot).

24.01.17:

22.02.17: Currently using a Roots RM090 bag which just fits the camera (including) a filter and and Nissan i40 Flash. I use the roots strap for the camera if I am not using my monopod.

22.06.21: Decided not to wait for 13 this Fall and upgraded from the 11 Max Pro.

While charging and downloading the iCloud backup, the top right side got really hot. After some research, I decided to unplug and continue with the download. No heating problems since, including 100 F. yesterday.

Screen protector and a Gear4 Crystal Palace snap case - compatible with MagSafe.

24.09.21: Kickstarter: As a backer of Shiftcam ProGrip, still waiting for 'fullfillment'.

Moment lenses (11 Max Pro) remain on the shelf so far (I would have to buy a another case to fit them.

www.alessandromichelazzi.com/night-mode-iphone-12-pro-max...

12.12-21: Managed to spend 1.5 hours rainless touring The Butchart Gardens Holiday Lights Display. Oped to use this iPhone and leave the heavier kit @ home, but did take the opportunity to use the ProGrip SHIFTCAM (Kickstarter - almost 2 years [Covid-19] from start to finish. I was surprised by the quality overall) for the first time.

It was 3 degrees C, so gloves where on, and I had no problem using the ShiftCam’s shutter button.

3.10.18: Returned the A7RIII and 55 f/1.8 and ordered the A7II + kit lens (28-70 f3.5-5.6) + Sony 35mm f1.4. For now I will keep the RX10IV for it's long lens, and sell the RX1. I will visit the question of buying the 24-105 f/4.0 next year (it might be in stock by then in Canada).

4.10.18: Camera and lenses delivered today - inserted the Sony SDXC UHS-II 64gb card. The battery is the same for the RX10M4, so I used my spare..

5.10.18 It was sunny yesterday and raining today, so lucked-in ,on late afternoon test shots outside (default factory setup - which = jpegs only - I shoot raw). all shots were darker so my default may have to be +.7.

Attached screen protector and Leash strap system. Tested both lenses with my NISSIN i40 flash.

7.10.18: Selling the kit lens and holding out for the 24-105 f/4.0. Sold.

9.10.18: In the absence of any info re next shipment to any Canadian dealers, ordered the 24-105 f4.0 from Adorama late in the evening. Shipped via Fedex.

Waiting see how time line is with Customs.

10.10.18: Scheduled delivery: Fedex - Thursday 10/11/2018 by 5:00 pm

11.10.18: Delivered just before 5. Test shots around the house (available natural light) - very happy with this combo - sharp!

19.10.18: Foggy day @ Beacon Hill Park. 24-105 shooting. Happy with bokeh. Many raw shots better than camera processed jpg.

22.12.18: I elected to take the RX1 and RX100M5 to Hawaii ( but I really would have preferred taking the a7ii and lenses ) but today's travel by air (security) and reduced carry-on sizes, at least for me, the smaller the better.

My saga from Aperture to Lightroom (I still prefer the workflow, but not the rendering of Sony raw) and finally to Capture one: Capture One Pro is way to much tech for me, and they now want $200.00 USD ( CDN $272.00 ) for an upgrade to Capture One Pro 12!

The current version of ON1 is closer to Lightroom than what I have seen so far, is fast and closer to the Sony colours, but not IMO, the same C1's Sony colours.

I waited for Luminar 3 to come out with their version of a DAM, but so far it seems to me to be an unfinished product, besides it keeps on crashing for me.

Bottom Line is that I have opted to start using C1 Express for Sony, which is free, and which meets most of my processing needs. I will continue to monitor and use ON1 for family shoots.

The weather since we got back has been pretty stormy, and I am adverse to shooting in wet weather with 'moisture and dust resistant" gear. So I will give myself a season gift of a Manfrotto Pro Light Camera Cover: Elements E-690 PL #MB PL-E-690 - currently on pre-boxing day sale.

11.02.19: Processing: Changed from Aperture to Lightroom 6 and then to Capture One( several years before their conversion t the 'Cloud' as Sony colours and processing were/was better in my opinion). C1's annual upgrade fee doubled in the last year so I opted for Capture One Sony instead. I have copies of both Luminar 3 (I prefer the latter to ON1, and ON1 (I really thought that ON1 would replaceLightroom for me, but Raw shots had colour fringing while the other apps did not, but I am sticking to C1 Sony for my Catalog, while processing as needed with Luminar 3 and Aurora 19 (more so than with Topaz).

I hope I will not regret the fact that the mount on this cam only has 4 screws as opposed to the III which has 6.

For now I will keep the RX10IV for it's long lens, and sell the RX1. I will visit the question of buying the 24-105 f/4.0 next year (it might be in stock by then in Canada) 4.10.18: Camera and lenses delivered today.

27.01.19: Present Kit - RX10M4 to Wife, RX1 as well as RX100M5 retained. Long shots for now with the OM-D EM1 and 70-300 (140-600 ).

Re: 24-105 f/4.0 - really happy with this lens, with the exception of some purple fringing.

1.08.19: Deciding whether or not to travel with this cam + the 24-105 (heavy) vs. the RX1 - 35mm f/2.0 (light). In addition to the latter I will have the RX100M5 & an iPhone Xs Max. In addition to the Peak Design Straps I will also use their Cuff as well.

15.09.19: Regreted somewhat not taking the ILCE-7M2. The RX1 viewfinder kept falling off in crowded conditions, tour buses, security etc..

FYI: I am just another amateur photographer, not that interested so much in the technical side of things, just rambling on about my kit.

28.06.14: Received the M3 yesterday (raining most of the day) and spent some time reading the guide and reviewing the settings. Far better Menu and Fn options than in the M2, somewhat faster to focus in low light (indoors), and the VF surprised me after reading forum opinions and hands on impressions. I wear trifocals and shoot with my left eye, but found that the glasses keep my nose off of the lcd, and that the VF is not too shabby. I made the mistake of handing the M3 over to 'the boss' so she could appreciate the built-in VF, with the Zebra setting of 70. I found the VF a bit of getting used to in terms of remembering to 'pull' it out, but I found that the adjustment arm to be firm enough so that I could calibrate it for my eye without much pushing and pulling.

IMO, the travel charger is very good in terms of speedier charging, so with two extra batteries, I will not worry about running out of power (one reason would be because of leaving then LCD on high - because I either forget to reset or by preference). I await now for the grip (Franiec), filter adapter (Lensmate) and the LCD protector (GGS-USA). Sunny skies today, so off to test shooting :)

29.06.14: Not so sunny after all. Found the VF to be useful but with my glasses (no eyecup) and sunny I found that I had to use my ball cap to shade the VF for a clearer view. I also found that my nose does touch the screen (I use my left eye) - more noticeable outdoors than inside, so will try with my right eye next outing.I had entered my memory setting from the M2 on a trial basis, but will have to adjust as I get used to the cam. I found the focusing a bit better than the M2 (noticeable with grandkid shots as well as with video), and that 2.8 sure makes a diff indoors.

30.06.14: Yesterday I experimented with the ND filter on and off, as well as with Exposure Comp. With the M2 I usually had to shoot -0.7 on a sunny day, but found that with the M3 it was either 0.0 or +0.3 depending on the time of day (i.e.: Noon). I usually shoot with a Rodenstock 52mm Circ Pol filter, and shot some on the M2 with varying results, but will have to wait for the Lensmate kit to arrive to see how the M3 shoots with this filter.

The flash is just as good as the M2, with the added bonus (IMO) that it is centered, and can be pulled back for a bounce shot. The latter requires some dexterity and medium to small hands as well as a few seconds to make sure one does, in fact, have the middle finger on the Shutter Button. For me this flash is better than the Oly Pens and XZ-1/2 (perhapos, even the EM-5) that I have had/have, but not the E-M1.

A user on Dpreview had a simple chart showing his assessment of the M3 and gave a 2 out of 5 for shooting kids. So far the M3 had done well enough with our 17 month old twin girls (grand-daughters), that I do not walk out of the house regretting leaving the E-M1 home. Is the latter better for that type of shooting, yes, but cumbersome when carrying out one's babysitting duties :) - so for me at least a 3.5/5. The M3 is there in your pocket for quick access, point and shoot.

So Aperture to be replaced with Photo in new OS, and Cloud storage changes. Not happy. Aperture will not open M3 files, but Lightroom 5.5 does, however:

Adobe says: "Customers using the Sony RX100 M3 and capturing images at ISO 125 may find the default rendering in ACR and Lightroom too dark. This is a known issue and we are working to improve this in a future update."

That explains a few things. Sony's Mac software used to convert to tiff and then try to import to Aperture - no go.

Corel AfterShot Pro 2 V2.02.10 X64 will render M3 raw as per bldg. shot posted in this album.

2.07.14: Shot with both the M2 and M3 yesterday while at the Gorge Waterway Canada Day picnic ( 11 am to 2 pm, clear skies, sunny and hot ). The M2 with a 52mm Rodenstock CP and the M3 in ND mode. Minor irritant re both cams, is the zoom when reviewing a shot, as it goes full zoom by default, and one must step backwards. The pop-up VF, when used, was very useful both for composing and stabilisation. It was a smoother process the more I took it out of my pocket, popped it up, pulled it out, and framed the shot with the added advantage of the cam turning off when I pushed it back into place. Re the latter, I shoot landscapes for the most part, so if shooting whatever else strikes me as interesting, I would keep the VF out.

Played with the remote control feature (using an iPad Air), which has limited camera controls, but useful none-the-less.

6.07.14: My low available natural light test for all lens and cameras over the years. Tripod mounted, IS off, ingested and export by LR5.5. Still have the problem of too dark on rendering, but auto tone applied more like it. A bit disappointed with the noise, and wondering if Olympus applies some processing to their Raw whereas Sony does not? I will have to grab back the M2 from my wife in order to compare noise, as I am thinking that the M3 is noisier under the same conditions.

Yesterday decided to shoot some macro, tripod mounted macros, and while no bad results, not surprisingly no contest with the OLY 60mm or the Panasonic 45mm mounted on the E-M1.

7.06.14: Dropped by Butterfly World, my wife shooting with the M2 and me with the M3. We both were not happy with the focusing of either cam, my wife more so than me. We both would have been better off bringing the E-M5 and the E-M1.

Both cams, shooting in Raw, are noisy in low light/shadows, for us at least. I think that we both have been spoiled by the Oly IS system, especially when. using the LCD for composing. The RX10 was ordered at the CDN price of $1099.00, but cancelled due to more than a few reviewers experience with it's focusing, as compared to the FZ1000. We were also told that there might be another price change in the offing for the RX10.

11.07.14: RX10, no more price reduction here in Canada, but it will include a spare battery and camera case. My wife is now trying out the M3 as she does not like using the M2 VF, so the latter is in my pocket. As for the RX10, previous travel cropping results of E-M1 shots is not something I would expect from the RX10 or M3 without noise (RAW). Now, having sold my 100-300, the FZ1000 is interesting.

13.07.14: Lot of review and opinion reading re the FZ1000. Found one that confirmed my concerns re quality past 200/300. Old school maybe, but I have never seen sharp shots from an all in one lens, although some full resolution shots on line appear to be pretty good when viewed on a 27" Mac monitor. Long story short, I opted for the RX10 (reduced price @ 1099.00 cdn + Sony Case + spare battery + LR 5.0. an aprox. value of $300.00 cdn). The later 3 free items included by special promotion, and appears to be limited to this one dealer. Out of stock for now, but worth the wait.

Spent the afternoon on Friday shooting two of my grand kids, one just crawling and pulling herself up, and the other a 3.5 yr old boy. The latter is a going concern, and I shot both of them with the M2, M3 and E-M1, both indoors and outside and clear sky 80 degree + weather. It was no contest when shooting fps with the E-M1, but both the M2 and M3 still resulted in some very good shots in the same mode. The video was also pretty good on all 3 - with him running back and forth under a sprinkler, as well as water-gun fights with his grandmother.

We have 12 grandkids, and the eldest of them have grown up seeing me with a camera in my hand, and as they get older start ducking when the cam comes out. I find that with the M2 and M3, they are not so quick to duck, and the young ones are intrigued by them them.

As I may have mentioned earlier, when traveling I usually have the 35-100 mounted on the E-M1 and the 12-40 mounted on the E-M5, the XZ-2 and DMC-TS5 when going on shore (tours, beach, snorkelling etc.). If I go anywhere this Fall/Winter it will be with the RX10, RX100M2 or 3 if my wife gives up on it :), and the TS5. The 35-100 has been listed F/S on line, although it is a great lens, I rarely use it.

Dpreview Sony Cyber-shot forum member's take on the M3:

www.dpreview.com/forums/post/54008433

23.07.14: WiFi transfers to iPad down pat, with the added bonus that one can review shots without extending the lens, and open the Menu to activate WiFi.

25.07.14: Set up memory settings (re the RX10, but some applicable to the M3) to include the following submitted by a DPreview Sony Cybershot forum member:

"I had pre-focus off, got terrible results, turned it back on, back to great results. pre-focus is what it does/needs to do in both AF-S and AF-C to accomplish such quick auto focus.

turn WiFi OFF until you need it.

If you are confident in your focus, turn auto review off. You can always check a shot by hitting play button.

you can use EVF, lcd off"

27.07.14: Excerpt from my RX10 notes - The RX100M3 will travel with me with either the RX10 or the E-M1 (my main problem will be not caving in and taking all three).

29.07.14: Trying out these settings in Memory - RX100M3:

forums.dpreview.com/forums/post/42043249

and

forums.dpreview.com/forums/post/50459449

2.08.14: What with LR going to the 'Cloud', and IMO, not rendering my raw files to my satisfaction, Aperture being replaced by 'Photo', Capture One not really dovetailing to my work flow, I am in the hunt for a compromise app. Years ago I purchased Bibble which was in turn merged with Corel and named AfterDark Pro. I upgraded to their latest version recently, and although the flow is not along the lines of Aperture (which was my favourite), it surprised me with it's rendering of RX10 (and RX100M3) shots, in particular one raw shot of the twins using the on board flash. It also appeared to me to render previews of a 3000+ catalog at a speed that is acceptable to me. Corel also seem to be keeping abreast of new camera updates a lot sooner than Aperture and other suggested Aperture replacement options.

I am keeping my Aperture catalogs up to date just in case Apple surprise us with 'Photo'.

18.08.14: 18.08.14: Some more shooting with the grand-kids yesterday. RX100M3 was by far the best cam indoors (1.8) than than the RX10 (2.8) (shooting Raw). The M3 flash pulled back for bounce works well depending on the height of the ceiling, but obviously not as well as a proper flash unit. I just plain got frustrated with the noise with the RX10 ( I know I was shooting raw and could/will deal with it in PP, however, Olympus (E-M5 and especially the E-M1 produce far better raw, which most of the time do not require PP). Net result is that the E-M1 goes back to primary, while the M3 will be day to day. Under similar conditions today, the E-M1 (pixel peeping in camera) the E-M1 shots are better (less noise), but wether or not it would make a difference when traveling (use the RX10 for outdoors and the M3 for indoors, etc. is my question to ponder.

20.08.14: Playing a tourist in my own town (in preparation of photo op road trip) I dropped in to Fisherman's Wharf @ Victoria's Harbour and shot away amongst all of the real tourists. Using my typical workflow (Photo Mechanic, Aperture & Topaz) I settled on 5 shots that I will post. A few shots were taken (using Cont. Shooting mode) of a couple of harbour seals being fed herring by kids, not many of which were in focus or sharp enough for me - the problem being guessing when the seal would pop up to grab the offered herring. I know that I had other options (such as shutter speed), but no time to setup.

21.08.14: I guess you can say that I am committed with Sony as I have just ordered a Sony Travel DC Charger Kit (for HX50V) [ not that one can find it on the Sony site, otherwise I would not have bought the wall charger] and the Portable Lithium Polymer Micro USB 7000mah.

30.08.14: A firmware update from Sony - yes, and updated today.

17.09.14: Back from 11 day road trip (2500k) around the Provinces of B.C. and Alberta. I left the E-M1 at home and used the RX10 and RX100M3 for all my shooting. I duplicated shots with both cams for caparison purposes, but used the M3 for mostly for interior shots and the RX10 for landscape. I was very happy with the combo and was able to review shots while on the road, with my Macbook Air, but preliminary views on my Apple 27" screen (pixel peeping, what can I say) ingested by Aperture and Photo Mechanic, appeared to me to be noisier than I would have expected if using the E-M1 and 35-100 /f2.8.

More later as I review and PP.

21.09.13: Posted 3 shots so far with marginally more PP than the E-M1 might have, but Topaz was used for landscape shots as my typical workflow. I will more than likely opt for the E-M1 + 35-100 /f2.8 and RX100M3 combo for local and traveling shooting, and turn the RX10 over to my wife who, while she has the E-M5+12-35 /f2.8 and the RX100M2, she misses the range of the C8080 for travelling. The E-M1+ 17mm /f1.8 is my go to combo for indoor grandchildren shots, although the M3 is no slouch.

24.09.14: Did I mention that the option to bounce the flash works for me (conventional ceilings). I can look through the viewfinder and hold the flash in the bounce position with one finger (I use my left eye). This works, IMO, to supplement natural light, but not so much with conventional indoor lighting, at least without some adjustments.

13.10.14: Canadian Thanksgiving dinner last evening - Decided to leave the E-M1 with the 17mm f/1.8 at home and take the RX10 to video along with the RX100M3 for candid family shots (no posing, etc). Forgot the M3 in my other jacket which resulted in some video, and very few shots with the RX10 - the older kids in particular are hard to shoot at a large family gathering. The grand-kids are far easier to shoot in that they have seen a camera in my hands since the day they were born, so they are used to it. The M3 would have done just fine for video and shots indoors.

18.10.14: Sold my pany 35-100mm/f2.8 today. Our recent trip convinced me that the RX10 will suffice for travel and at home (most of the time for now). My E-M1 gets little use these days so I have to ask myself whether or not to sell it and lenses. As I grow older, the O-MD IS system is something I must consider, however, both the M3 and RX10 are good enough for the present.

6.11.14: Shooting indoors a lot due to the rain so the grand-kids are the subject matter. The -E-M1 plus the Fl600r+12-60mm/F2.8 are not my favorite combo indoors (I admit I am lazy and do not want to spend a whole lot of time programming the 600r which it seems to require [Never had that problem with Canon or Nikon flashes], and I also have to make sure that I use 2500mAh batteries or I get the dreaded yellow light and Auto Check flashing lights ( no warranty, a so called repair as nothing changed ). So what do I resort to? The M1 flash bounce and f/1.8 works for me every time, bar a high ceiling, although the E-M1 and 17mm/F1.8 + top notch IS, render better shots for me where motion is an issue.

I am really intrigued about the RX10 and Nissin i40 combination, in that the RX10 with it's built-in flash is not too bad (no bounce option),so will have to wait for some reviews.

25.11.14: Pulled the plug today and passed the E-M1 and 12-40 lens onto my wife, an OM shooter from way back. I am now 100% over to Sony in that the replacement will be a RX1 - I expect it to take me back to the days of shooting landscapes with the D700. The A7 Black Friday advertised prices at London Drugs intrigued me, as well as the new A7r in particular, but the Sony lens road map + $ made up my mind. I am very happy with my RX10, RX100M3 and now I will add FF to my kit - no more lens's to carry around and change as required, to say nothing about the weight and inconvenience when traveling, etc.

14.12.14: Sony soft skin effect problem in video ( and stills? )

29.01.15: Interesting re switching from Aperture to C1:

www.phaseone.com/Imaging-Software/Capture-One/Testimonial...

2.03.15: 2.03.15: So that now that I can travel camera 'light' (RX100M3, RX1 and/or RX10) I am preparing for a trip next month. I have traveled the area in question several times, and photo ops, at least for me, will be far fewer, unless I am testing the cams vs the E-M1+12-40mm/f2.8 and XZ-2 combo last time. I should be taking only one, but the RX100M3 and RX1 would do just fine, but the RX10 with it's zoom would also come in handy. Decisions, decision......

7.04.15: RX1 and RX100m3 it will be.

4.05.15: Finally back with a nasty case of bronchitis (which I attribute to the passengers getting on in San Diego for a 4 day cruise to Vancouver). The RX1 was with me most of the time while on shore except for snorkelling or what I considered not to secure areas. For instance we took a tour to La Antigua Guatemala and I had the RX1. RX100M3 and iPhone6+. High noon sun, but that is the way these tours off of cruise ships work of necessity. Back on board shots were reviewed on my iPad Air 2 and cards backed up to a small portable HD. I found the iPhone 6+ to be on me most of the time, while post processing and uploading to Flickr was a lark. Back home, I now get to review 3 weeks worth of shots.

My wife opted take my RX10 instead of the OMD-E-M1 , and I think that will become permanent. I missed the versatility of the RX10 for travelling, so if a RX20 shows up, I guess the E-M1 is on it's way out.

14.06.15: While travelling I found that I posted most shots to Flickr from the iPhone 6+ and a few RX1 shots from the iPad.

Most of my shooting was done with the RX1 (with VF) and the 100m3 for long shots. Although, an RX1 crop was pretty near the equivalent IMO. I have just about completed this trip's culling and PP. Am I happy to be back agin into FF shooting!

The short of it for me is: The RX1 for most of my type of shooting, the RX100M3 for interiors and for pocket only, and the RX10 for all around shooting ( although no where near as fast and stabilised as the E-M1 - I rarely need either option).

3.08.15: As luck would have it, a shot taken with this cam in the Manor House's trophy room of the Fintry Provincial Park, has been published in the British Columbia Magazine's Summer Issue.

Not planning on replacing the 3 with the 4 as the VF and 4k are not a must upgrade for me, as was the RX10.

18.10.15: Changed my mind (sold some kit and will be selling this cam) and ordered the M4 today, along with a screen protector and grip CD$1099.00. The latter not much over the price in US$'s (by comparison to Apple's nearly 35% exchange rate).

Scribd is batch & broken?

Summary

Exporting a quick news.yc post from my blog engine to Scribd. I found adding to Scribd is batch & broken? Or is it?

I write a lot on startups, badly some say. [0] I also like using my own tools that allow me to write something quickly, then export to external sites like Scribd.

'... I also want to use some sort of online 'editor' to write markup and edit ...'

I really want to be able to post in real-time, preferably using my toolset . I don't know if I'd tolerate using other toolsets but I'll take a peek to see if this is possible. I also want to use some sort of editor, preferably online to write markup and edit online. I realise that not everyone wants to write text online. Scribd appears to be geared to pre-written, edited and formated information in different formats. I accept this. [1] My initial impression is Scribd does not appear to be geared towards real-time, information generation.

So I decided to test my impressions and try to generate information in real-time at the server. Here's what I've found.

Upload

Because I have control of my ng blogging engine [2] I can do tricky things like export content to other sites. The only way I could upload a quick post [3] to Scribd is via an upload form. [4] While you can upload existing files in lots of different formats creating a document online is difficult. In fact I have come to the conclusion that the way scribd has been structured, this may not be possible at all.

Editor

I selected the upload link [5] and found you could either publish a document OR ... edit text in a box. I was surprised by this. I would have thought a more comprehensive option for editing online. There are plenty of tools around. The ideas and technology behind this is well understood. Coming from a slashdot, flickr sort of background I'm used to having tools you can just edit information and get an instant response.

So I added a post by adding an existing post I created for news.yc. The first thing I found was you could not enter any markup. In this case XHTML. It was simply rendered, tags and all. So I drop back to plain text. No tools for adding emphasis, bold, etc. In terms of markup this is pre-historic. Eventually I did find a rich text editor in a link right next to the plain text box. I simply missed this the first time. Why this is not default I'm not sure? My only suggestion is it takes more resources. You certainly need this type of markup to improve the readability of the content.

Editor take 2

Sometimes it is possible to leverage better tools to your advantage. So it was of no surprise that I found the addition of a Facebook application using the newly created API. Facebook is mature, polished and has some slick editing tools so I wanted to see if Scribd had leveraged Facebooks editing tools ? [7] MyNotes in particular. But could not find anything beyond a upload on the Facebook Doc homepage. [8]

Despite the fact I couldn't find a way to create content in Facebook and export to Scribd does not mean it's not there now or in the future if enough users request it.

Editing

I continued. Saved the content, added a title, summary and tags (looking good) and hit enter and go to edit. What, "you can't edit the saved file?". You can edit the title, summary and tags. What about the content? Now that's a bummer. I happened to make a simple mistake so I could find no way to make changes once saved? [6]

Save, view, oddities

I also noted some oddities in the final saved document with URL links. I would have thought links would be converted to clickable urls. This problem can be avoided using the rich editor and only applies to the basic editor. Another oddity is saving the document. A document is recorded with title + summary + tags and other meta data. Finally the document itself. So I didn't bother adding the title, summary or any other references to the document. Why? I've already added them once. But I got a surprise when I find no title, summary or tag information in the downloadable text file.

No DRY storage of information here [9]. There is an assumption the document or information uploaded is discrete and contains all required meta information. A duplication. I'll have to be more mindful of this for future uploads. To me adding the title, summary again in the text will initially look funny to the reader who will see two titles, two summaries and then the content.

Things I like

There are some aspects of Scribd I really like, including

* unique url for a document

* text metrics (text statistics)

* view metrics (traffic analytics)

* selective licensing

* various download formats

* community feedback (view information, comments & voting)

These alone make Scribd useful both users and authors. Especially the feedback loop from logged in readers.

Real-time ready?

At the moment the focus appears to be on pre-existing documents and wisely so. I initially thought the tools are a little primitive but quickly found some alternatives. I'm still confused about the inability to edit saved documents. This one for me is a bit of a killer. For small snippets of information the inability to import the added meta data (title, summary and tags) may cause confusion when reading. If left out confusion in downloaded documents. I'm also surprised there is no upload for XHTML or any path to import HTML like documents at all. The one thing I really miss is an API. With an API I could simply create the text, export it dispensing with the UI supplied altogether.

Will I use Scribd? Yes. But the question is I will have to adapt my approach taking into account the short comings I've discussed. [10]

19.04.17: I had planned to wait until the V6 edition, but while the V4 is operating normally except for the damaged control ring (not interested in sending it in for repairs back to Ontario), I decided to upgrade.

Scheduled for delivery on the 21st, with the grip on the 24th.

20.04.17: Delivered this afternoon along with screen protector. Grip ordered from Sony. Debating whether or not to order filter adapter ( 21.04.17:ordered) or try to remove it from the V4.

1/05/17: Lensmate filter adapter attached as well as Sony grip.

Shooting with this cam and RX10M3 yesterday. What a diff in the focusing. Trying to capture a seaplane against a white (Overcast) background, at 600mm (with monopod), was frustrating to say the least. The RX100V5, IMO, would have nailed it.

The 100V captured the shots I was going for in the midst of passengers coming out of Customs, that I would not have with the V4.

My combo for traveling depending on the area (Alaska cruise). For air travel the RX100m5 and the RX1.

I have copies of both Luminar 3 (I prefer the latter to ON1, and ON1 (I really thought that ON1 would replaceLightroom for me, but Raw shots had colour fringing while the other apps did not, but I am sticking to C1 Sony for my Catalog, while processing as needed with Luminar 3 and Aurora 19 (more so than with Topaz.
