Le Dressing d'Opale

Best viewed BIG.

My latest for the ECU School of Theatre and Dance. Not the illustration style I typically work in, but I'm still pretty thrilled about the way the illustration (and the overall poster design) came out.

Three years ago today my companion of 22 years was diagnosed with Glioblastoma Multiforme, a grade IV brain cancer. Following the surgery to remove the tumor, we were told that he only had, at best, 6 months to live. Still, every day for 7 weeks, we went to the hospital for radiation. He was on chemo drugs for 16 months until several tumors started to form in June of 2006. He definitely defied the odds!

He was the most intelligent and gifted person I have ever met. It was so sad to watch as the tumors ate away every sense of his being. He left me on November 6, 2006.

This ring is a melding of our wedding bands and the anniversary ring he gave me. It is a symbol of the love I will always hold in my heart for this dear man.

'Chartreuse' ... a color halfway between yellow and green that was named because of its resemblance to the green color of one of the French liqueurs called green chartreuse.

'Chanteuse' ... a woman who is a cabaret or nightclub singer.

I hope to sing with this pretty lady pictured here. :-) Why 'lady'? I don't know, really. But, somehow, it looks like a lady. And anyway, see that nice shiny black head? That's clear Sally Hansen "Hard As Nails" nail polish over black tying thread. :-) [Did you just get a mental picture of me going up to the cosmetic counter at Wal-Mart asking for Sally Hansen nail polish? LOL! Hope not. 'Cause it didn't happen.]

I have been tying my own flies now for many years, but recently I have been creating my own designs as well. If you think it's satisfying to catch a fish on a fly that you've tied yourself, let me assure you ... it pales in comparison to catching one on a fly that you've not only tied yourself, but created as well!

A number of years ago now, I tested the waters of the Pinware River in Labrador with my first creation. It has proved so successful ... not just there, but on any river I've fished ... that it's my 'go to' fly, my 'bread and butter' fly. Sorry, no pun intended. :-) I've been so successful with it, that some seasons that's all I use. Really! My fly tin ... and I usually carry at least three ... holds 196 flies ... four leaves, each of which has seven rows, and each row holds seven flies ... but at least 25 or 30 of those 196 flies are that fly I designed ... in various sizes. The ten pound fish I hooked and landed on opening day was taken on that fly, as a matter of fact.

It is not the fly you see here! :-) It doesn't even have a name. In fact, there's only one other fisherman besides myself who's seen that fly ... and used it. He's been almost as successful with it as me:-) And, I'm pretty sure he's not going to tell.

No. This fly you see here is hot off the drawing board ... just finished tying it. I've tied it in a couple of variations and I've got a really good feeling about it! It glows with an inner light. Uncharacteristically, I've given it a name before it's even hit the water. And, I've shown it to anyone who cares to look here on Flickr. Maybe I've jinxed it. :-) If so, no big deal. I've got at least a half dozen other brand new creations I can try.

This is not held in my tying vise, by the way. It's held in a pair of needle nose pliers with one hand while I took the shot with the camera in the other. No tripod. Just lazy, I guess. The backdrop is grey sky ... something that we seem to be stuck with this spring.

it was a labour of love in a way but also a pleasure to do I would like to do more but with beads introduced in to the design as well next time ....... I always leave the backs of dresses open as it makes dressing a doll so much easier and I never use the dreaded Velcro always clear snaps ^__^

... a good idea, two wonderful vintage craft books with tons of pattern, high quality wool, knitting needles, scissors (vintage from my granny), an assortment of sweet embellishments, jersey for the sleeves, sewing thread,... and time

I designed this & did the finish on it...it began as a scale drawing and came to

be real :-)

I thought I'd show you an old photo of an outfit I made many years ago for a 'swap'.

This long romantic coat and seperate hood (so not strictly a Hoodie) was only half of the outfit - there was also a dress and fairy wings. The brown yarn was a cashmere blend.

I participated in several 'swaps' but except for a few times, I never heard from the recipient and/or never got anything in return ... so I gave up doing 'swaps'.

Nothing ever turns out like you plan it in your minds eye. An early pen drawing that went through several manifestations before it passed the client and planning processes. What it will (I hope) look like is in the preceeding slide.

I made this bag for a fundraising raffle (in support of a local nonprofit). The weather has been super cold and crappy lately, and I ran out of time to fuss over the pictures as I usually do. I didn't bother with my tripod, just used a high ISO and said 'good enough!'.

The dark grey fabric is wool or a wool blend. The plaids are from cotton shirts that I cut up. All of these fabrics are from thrift stores.

I hand pieced the hexagons using the English paper piecing method. Each side measures 1 inch. After I removed the paper, I machine quilted the hexagon panel onto a scrap of muslin. Then I trimmed it square and pieced the wool around it.

I'm very proud of how it turned out! The plaids mesh really well and pop quite nicely against the grey.

Es una idea bastante peculiar que tuve a inicios de año para conmemorar el año chino del buey jeje

Some of you already know this - but my Blythe darlings live in a tall, Art Deco cabinet that has glass doors - we call it BlytheTowers.

Well BlytheTowers is in our 'living room' the main room of our house, where we spend a great deal of our time. So we are 'under dolly observation' quite a bit.

And here are Maddie and Edina in their room - discussing just how strange we people are.

Its all happening on site now! My firstborn passed planning and is now, eventually rising up from a big hole in the ground. They have been piling this week for the foundations. Im not saying this is what I ever hoped it would look like, but your first baby is always the apple of your eye.

Saddly I have little control over what happens to it at teh moment. Someone else in the office is dealing with it now, and it is a Design-build contract. At least I managed to set in stone some of the more important design features at planning approval stage.

April is now released at Dubai May Event.

This is a very old photo of my first Blythe - Lillian (on the left with her hair still perfect 'just out of the box') with BiBi - the first Blythe doll I met.

BiBi is a French Trench and was given to my daughter by a hopeful suitor - she is very much a mini-me of my daughter. The suitor was not successful but at the time, I'd been sewing very fancy clothes for a Barbie doll who had her own website and Barbie dolls are very difficult to sew for because they go in&out a lot ... !!

I found the Blythe body much easier to sew and knit for and started making clothes for BiBi ... but at the time both BiBi and my daughter lived interstate and so ...

...

I had to get a Blythe of my own ... and that is why Lillian came to live with me - and the rest is history ;-)
