Poetry in Translation (CLXXXIII: Jorge Luis BORGES (1899 – 1986), Argentina, Poet: “Noi suntem Epoca, Noi suntem Legenda”, “We are the time. We are the famous”
Jorge Luis BORGES (1899 - 1986)
Jorge Luis BORGES
(1899 – 1986)
We are the time. We are the famous
by Jorge Luis Borges
We are the time. We are the famous
metaphor from Heraclitus the Obscure.
We are the water, not the hard diamond,
the one that is lost, not the one that stands still.
We are the river and we are that greek
that looks himself into the river. His reflection
changes into the waters of the changing mirror,
into the crystal that changes like the fire.
We are the vain predetermined river,
in his travel to his sea.
The shadows have surrounded him.
Everything said goodbye to us, everything goes away.
Memory does not stamp his own coin.
However, there is something that stays
however, there is something that bemoans.
Noi suntem Epoca, Noi suntem Legenda
Jorge Luis Borges
(1899 – 1986)
Noi suntem Epoca. Noi suntem Legendara
Noi suntem fluviul inutil, preprogramat,

Biographical Note:
Ion Caraion
(b. 1923, Co Buzau, Romania – d. 1986, Lausanne Switzerland)
The literary path of Ion Caraion reflects the tragedy of the generation of Romanian poets, who finished school just as the war started (1942) and graduated from University as the Communist Dictatorship took over (1948).
Caroian was a promising talent however his beginnings were not without hardships as the fascist military dictatorship in Romania confiscated his first volume of poetry in 1943.
There is little wonder that such incident causes the poet to become, a year on, in 1944, editor of Communist Party Youth daily (Scinteia Tineretului).
However this is only a brief honeymoon as Caraion frees himself from the straight jacket of Marxist tennets and distsances himself from the Party. He was not the first man of letters to do this, as Panait Istrati did it before him, after his visit to Soviet Union, in the 1930’s when he became disenchanted with Communist practice.
But unlike Istrati Caraion went a step further when he stated that “Fascism is no other than a reaction to Communism’ and that “by destroying the reaction to Evil (Fascism) the Western powers have left unscathed the cause of Evil (Communism)”. But Stalinist Romania is no haven for dissent of any kind, even those of poets.
In the ensuing witch hunt Caraion is arrested in 1950 on the pretext that he tried to publish his poems abroad (a cardinal sin in a dictatorship, if one has not got official blessing). He is stripped of all civil rights, has all his property confiscated and gets a life sentence. to infamous Danube-Black Sea canal.
After five years Caraion is freed in 1955 only to be rearrested in 1958 this time for “high treason, spying, propaganda against communist culture, repeated attempts at publishing his poems abroad”. This second fall from grace brings along the series of the most severe prisons, which make Sozjenytsin’s Gulag look like a holiday camp: nothing is spared from the sinister Gherla and Aiud prions, to the copper mines of Cavnic and Baia Sprie, where prisoners’ flesh is disintegrating in the acid mineshafts.
Caraion comes out of this dantesque Infernum, eleven years later, in 1964, under a general amnesty of political prisoners, at a time when Krustchew was starting questioning Stalinist practices.
The poet is by now a broken man and ready to make a deal with his torturers. His literary career is restored and he is allowed to receive honours and more. This episode marks a new turning in Ion Caraion’s activity as the head of a government publication aimed at the Romanian exiles in the West. The period coincides with the infamous poisoned umbrellas, assassination attempts on the Pope, letter bombs, kidnapping and assassination of dissidents. A new twist in Caraion’s life comes with him being allowed to emigrate in 1981 as he asks for political asylum in Switzerland, where he dies five years later, isolated and mistrusted by his fellow Romanian émigrés.
This short biography is largely based on the entry in Florin Manolescu’s Encyclopaedia of the Romanian Literary Diaspora (1945 – 1989), Ed Compania, 2003 , Bucharest, pp 123 – 128.

This book started its life in my "library of Intentions" - well, it has since been "promoted" to current reading and I do not regret it. It makes for a gripping and excellently crafted historical novel with its central character Marie-Louise O'Murphy, painted by Boucher (see cover) - mistress of Louis XV, King of France: an absolute must!
Having lived in Paris a number of years and being fluent in French language and culture I found the narrative meticulously researched and immensely entertaining = a great page-turner! An author to watch out for.

Pauper’s Cookbook by Jocasta Innes from Abe Books came from the UK. I had no idea Innes, author of several decor titles, was known there for this cook book and its frugal recipes.
The $2.00 a Day: Living on Almost Nothing in America is a shocker to read....I never heard anything about it before I ran across it also on Abe’s website. “Families in extreme poverty” are mentioned in reviews as being well documented. A small book with a big impact.
Rafael Morales:
Collected poems (1943-2003)
MUJER DESNUDA
Rafael MORALES (b. 1919 Toledo region – d. 2005)
Hermoso cuerpo de mujer desnuda,
Territorio frutal,
Y port us brazos llega fluvial y prezosa la mañana,
Mientran cantan la saves
Por la clara elemeda de tu pelo.
NUD DE FEMEIE
Rafael Morales
(b. 1919, Toledo – d. 2005)

And if it was
(Carol RUMENS,
b. 1944, London)
If it was only for you
all along, all the time, all the way,
and nothing was left of our brightest exchange
of brain-light and blood-sugar; if
it turned out to be just for the flirt and the fling, the great luck
when it worked, when we came, and I caught
the whiff of your sweat, like human sweat,
and your glow, saw your feathers and hair
flare like an Inca head-dress, though
no more than a match-flame, over and out, not catching
anyone’s fire but mine, any time but now,
would you forgive me, words?
from: ‘Blind Spots’ (Seren, Bridgend, 2007), p. 97
Iar dacă …
(Carol RUMENS,
n. 1944, Londra)
