GOLDEN BRUSHTAIL possums, adorable and rare, are an unusual form of the common brushtail possum that get their fluffy golden coats from a genetic mutation that results in low levels of melanin in their skin and fur; this is the same pigment that gives human skin and hair its colour and makes you look tanned.
Unfortunately for these little guys, their colour is more of a bane in the wild because it makes them conspicuous to predators. It’s hard to hide among the leaves when you’ve got bright golden fur! Because of this, the golden brushtail possum is a rare sight in the wild, being found mostly in small pockets around Tasmania where they have fewer wild predators.

These may be two different plants. They were in a neighbor's flower pot. I suppose that some sort of somatic mutation is responsible for the spots of missing pigment.

It is a lotus leaf that undergoes a genetic change, commonly called a genetic mutation. This mutation is not immutable and is not inherited.

Last year, I noticed a fascinating change in some of my cosmos flowers. I saved and replanted their seeds, and this year, the unique trait reappeared! Instead of the usual single row of petals, these cosmos have multiple layers, creating a fuller, almost ruffled look. Could they have cross-pollinated with my zinnias?

Contrary to popular opinion White Peafowl are a colour mutation of the Indian Blue Peafowl, not albinos. The lack of colour in the White Peafowls feathers is determined by pigment and structure. With White Peafowl their unusual lack of colour is due to a missing pigment. The missing pigment is dark and interferes with light. These are the most popular Peafowl within the UK after the Indian Blue Peafowl. White Peafowl were the first recognised colour mutation and can be found in the wild in India. The birds are completely white with blue seeing eyes. There is a very slight discolouration to the ocelli on the White Peacocks tail. Both the male and female White Peafowl are very similar until they are 12 months old. Then it becomes easier to distinguish the male as the peacock has slightly longer legs than the peahen.
The peacock also develops slightly longer feathery tail coverts at about 12 to 14 months. The peacock is also slightly larger build than the white peahen.
The White Peachicks are born with yellow down and blue seeing eyes. Within days the white peachick develops white tips to their wings. As they mature the yellow down is replaced by pure white feathers.
White Peachicks are hard to sex prior to reaching one year old. At this stage the White Peacock will develop feathery coverts, sometimes the male has slightly longer legs. White peafowl breed true. Indian Blue or Black Shouldered bred to White will be White split to Indian Blue or Black Shouldered. The White split peachicks will look like and Indian Blue Peafowl but will develop white wing tips. Some times a split white to Indian Blue peacock will have a white throat latch. White peacocks bred to Indian Blue peahens will occasionally hatch a white peachick.
