In this photo, the young Albino Tree Swallow is being fed by the parent. Notice the young bird's red eye, pinkish bill and legs. Both parents have normal coloration.
I'm thrilled that I'd managed to capture some record shots of the feeding action. It might take quite a while before another such opportunity would come my way.

It is a lotus leaf that undergoes a genetic change, commonly called a genetic mutation. This mutation is not immutable and is not inherited.
Foxglove (Digitalis purpurea) is a common wildflower, with its tubular bell-shaped blossoms running up a single, tall stalk, so I was startled to see one today with an additional blossom on TOP of the stalk. After some research, it turns out that a genetic mutation called peloria sometimes makes zygomorphic flowers - symmetrical in one plane, like foxgloves and orchids - bloom actinomorphically - symmetrical in all planes, like roses and dandelions. Very cool to see!

Last year, I noticed a fascinating change in some of my cosmos flowers. I saved and replanted their seeds, and this year, the unique trait reappeared! Instead of the usual single row of petals, these cosmos have multiple layers, creating a fuller, almost ruffled look. Could they have cross-pollinated with my zinnias?

As this discussion goes on I can see people fall on one or the other side of this complex issue. It's intriguing. My guess is that the extent of the transformation would matter. Is the original observable?
