The mausoleum of Atatürk was created as a result of the common desire of the Turkish people to build a “monumental mausoleum” that would befitting of Turkey's founder and first president, and its great leader in the Turkish War of Independence. The site that was considered most appropriate was Rasattepe, a hill overlooking Ankara, the Turkish capital.

The earthquakes had taken place in October - November 2011. The seats look uncomfortable at any time.

At that time, one year after the earthquakes, there were still many people housed in 'container cities' around Van.

Anıtkabir (literally, "memorial tomb") is the mausoleum of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the leader of the Turkish War of Independence and the founder and first President of the Republic of Turkey. It is located in Ankara and was designed by architects Professor Emin Onat and Assistant Professor Ahmet Orhan Arda, whose proposal beat 48 other entries from several countries in a competition held by the Turkish Government in 1941 for a "monumental tomb" for Atatürk.

The site is also the final resting place of İsmet İnönü, the second President of Turkey, who was interred there after he died in 1973. His tomb faces the Atatürk Mausoleum, on the opposite side of the Ceremonial Ground.

The mausoleum was depicted on various Turkish banknotes during 1966-1987 and 1997-2009

Detail of a large statue, in Gallipoli National Park, of Mustafa Kemal "Ataturk" aiding a fallen soldier in WW1's Battle of Gallipoli. The Park, a many acred memorial reserve on the hills and shores of the Gallipoli Peninsular, encompasses all the significant battlefield sites and is a memorial to the fallen, both Turkish and Allied. Ataturk is the revered father of Turkish independence and became the first president of The Republic of Turkey.

Atatürk Kalbimizde Yaşıyor

His life full of wars for independence of Turkish country and revolutions to raise the Turkish nation to level of modern civilization, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the leader in the Turkish War of Independence and Turkish Revolutions, and founder of Turkish Republic, died on November 10th 1938.

Mustafa Kemal Atatürk was a great leader, who turned Turkey into member of modern civilization, with all institutions. To build a mausoleum that would represent his eminence, and thoughts about principles, revolutions and modernization, emerged as a common idea of the Turkish nation, during the great sadness following the death of Atatürk.

BUILDING ANITKABİR

In the first stage on starting construction, the nationalization procedure was initiated. The construction of Anıtkabir was started in 9th November 1944, with a magnificent ceremony. Construction was completed in 9 years, in 4 stages.

Anıtkabir is placed in the Peace Park, which is created with saplings from several foreign countries and from several regions of Turkey, that is inspired from the epigram of

Atatürk; “Peace at home, peace in the world”.

29 Ekim 1923 (83. Yıl)

Ataturk diyor ki:

"Bugun vasil oldugumuz netice, asirlardan beri cekilen milli musibetlerin intibahi ve bu aziz vatanin, her kosesini sulayan kanlarin bedelidir. Bu neticeyi, Turk gencligine emanet ediyorum."

"Ey Turk Gencligi!

Muhtac oldugun kudret, damarlarindaki asil kanda mevcuttur! "

Cumhuriyet devrimlerine sadik kalacagimiza, Buyuk Onder'imizin bize verdigi gorevi gurur ve azimle yerine getirecegimize soz veririz.

Conservatism both socially and politically becomes mainstream in the society of Turkey today, according to a recent survey published in October 2012, by Istanbul's Bogazici University.

People who insist on liberal and secular ideas account less than 20 percent of the Turkish population now, representing a major drop down in the last decade.

The survey further shows that the majority of the Turkish public would evaluate political leaders by their religious identity. In the survey, 71.9 percent of the voters claimed they took party leader's religious conviction into consideration during the election.

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, a pious Muslim himself, has kept pushing Islamic principles into various public discourse through his speeches and is trying to restore Turkey's Islamic root by building more mosques, introducing religion education into school system and advocating for a new law to ban abortion.

Erdogan often openly comments on main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) leader Kemal Kilicdaroglu's Alevi identity to attract the public attention. The Turkish government supports and privileges a certain interpretation of the Sunni Turkish-Islam normatively and intends to exclude other heterodox religious and cultural practices.

Religious or ethnic minorities (Kurds, Alevis, and other non-Muslim minorities like Jews, Greeks and Armenians) have been represented as threats or suspicious aliens to be cautious about. However, religious people all around the country favor and support the government and its policies.

Turkey, a secular state, has always been struggling between liberal ideas and religion conservatism, modern and tradition, and now it seems like liberal and modern face of the country is rapidly becoming out of date...
