Le musée a été créé à l’initiative du général Dubail, Grand Chancelier de la Légion d'honneur, et financé grâce à une souscription ouverte parmi les légionnaires et les médaillés militaires, dont le succès fut particulièrement vif aux États-Unis. Il a été inauguré en 1925. Au noyau initial des collections, composé du fonds de la Grande Chancellerie, de dépôts des musées nationaux, se sont ajoutés, au fil du temps, de nombreux dons de collectionneurs [coll. Maurice Bucquet (1860-1921), coll. La Tour d'Auvergne Lauragais, coll. Pierredon], mais également des dons effectués par des États étrangers afin de compléter les collections existantes [Fédération de Russie, Pologne...], enfin d'achats prestigieux et dations [écrin des décorations de Cambacérès en 1982, collier de l'ordre royal des Deux-Siciles d'Achille Murat en 20021]. À noter depuis 2008, le dépôt par Antonio Benedetto Spada de sa collection au Musée : cette collection est sans doute la plus importante en main privée.

Muse are an English rock band from Teignmouth, Devon, formed in 1994. The band consists of Matt Bellamy (lead vocals, guitar, piano, keyboards), Chris Wolstenholme (bass guitar, backing vocals, keyboards) and Dominic Howard (drums, percussion).
Muse released their debut album, Showbiz, in 1999, showcasing Bellamy's falsetto and a melancholic alternative rock style. Their second album, Origin of Symmetry (2001), expanded their sound, incorporating wider instrumentation and romantic classical influences, and earned them a reputation for energetic live performances. Absolution (2003) saw further classical influence, with orchestra on tracks such as "Butterflies and Hurricanes", and became the first of five consecutive UK number-one albums. The album has a noticeably darker and heavier tone musically, with a lyrical focus on the theological and apocalyptic concepts.
