Pictures of the demolition of the former Motown Records Headquarters located at the Donovan Building.

Our mayor couldn't stand the broken windows and marred facade so he got it to be torn down for 15 or so spaces for the Super Bowl. What's sad is that this historic building designed by Albert Kahn is in great condition, and they left everything inside, lobby details, motown papers, marble, etc.

A new portrait tribute to Pop icon, Elton John by expressionist artist Stephen B. Whatley .

Sir Elton John's biographical film, Rocketman has its premiere in Leicester Square, London tonight.

The painting was inspired by the singer's image of the 1970s and songs across the decades; with a particular inspiration coming from the song Philadelphia Freedom - lyrics of which inspired the title.

Stephen B Whatley - whose portrait of Barack Obama was published in TIME - is noted for his vibrant contemporary paintings, for Buckingham Palace, the BBC and the Tower of London (where there is a permanent walkway of his series of 30 paintings at Tower Hill). His work is in private collections worldwide and other public collections including the London Transport Museum and Westminster Cathedral.

LET MERCY LEAD: Rich Mullins (1955-1997) - 20th Anniversary Tribute. 2017

A new portrait tribute of the American contemporary Christian singer and songwriter, Rich Mullins (1955-1997) painted at the beginning of September 2017. Rich Mullins was tragically killed in an auto accident on this date, September 19 in 1997.

The oil painting was commissioned by a new American collector of mine, whose heartfelt and perceptive appreciation of my expressionist work has made her a dear friend too; and indeed I feel I know - have always known - this great singer and man of faith, like a friend.

I was touched to learn that his birthday was October 21 - also the date that the first native American Indian, Kateri Tekakwitha was made a Saint by the Catholic church in 2012 - so fitting, as in the late 1980s, the singer worked as a music teacher on a Native American Indian Reserve in Arizona.

The art of Rich Mullins was his music - through which he constantly expressed his unwavering faith in the Mercy of Jesus Christ - though he was far from a traditional Christian. Whilst he had a great devotion to the traditions of Christianity, through his deep innate faith - and indeed was moving towards the Catholic faith (with a great affection for Saint Francis of Assisi & Saint Elijah), at the time of his tragic passing - his early life was immersed in The Quakers testimonies of peace and social justice - that later inspired many of his lyrics.

He refused to hide the many personal life battles and struggles he encountered and indeed they became the foundation of many of his poetic lyrics; and the contemporary 'sermons' - often sprinkled with self- deprecating humour - that he felt lead to share at his concerts - all with the heartfelt aim and belief to share the message of the Mercy of Jesus - for all.

Jesus did not exclude anyone in society: His was - is - the most Unifying Heart - and this message resonates from the heart and soul of Rich Mullins - as is vividly evident from the quote from the man himself, with which I end this tribute.

This painting was as much about capturing the soulful essence of the man, through a selection of photographs (ranging from portraits to captures of him playing at his concerts) as about his music - so much of which I absorbed, in the build-up to the creation; and during breaks when painting over the duration of 3 days. Indeed the portrait's title was inspired by one of my favourites, 'Let Mercy Lead' (1995).

Rich's recording history dated from 1981 to 1997 - and his songs "I See You' Cry The Name' , 'An Awesome God' , We Are Not As Strong As We Think we Are', 'Elijah', 'Hold Me Jesus', 'Step By Step' 'Green' and 'Verge of A Miracle' are among those that echoed in my heart as I painted with prayers.

"Jesus said whatever you do to the least of these my brothers you’ve done it to me. And this is what I’ve come to think. That if I want to identify fully with Jesus Christ, who I claim to be my Savior and Lord, the best way that I can do that is to identify with the poor. This I know will go against the teachings of all the popular evangelical preachers. But they’re just wrong. They’re not bad, they’re just wrong. Christianity is not about building an absolutely secure little niche in the world where you can live with your perfect little wife and your perfect little children in a beautiful little house where you have no gays or minority groups anywhere near you. Christianity is about learning to love like Jesus loved and Jesus loved the poor and Jesus loved the broken-hearted..." - Rich Mullins, 1997.

"In 1953, Vivian Carter Bracken and her husband, James, borrowed $500 from a pawnbroker because they wanted to record a group they'd found in Gary, Ind., where they owned a record store. They took their initials, V and J, and Vee-Jay Records was born."

Gary’s Vivian Carter paved the way for many in the music industry. Gary has been the home and starting point for many in all facets of the entertainment industry. One of Gary’s own who played a significant role in some of the greats throughout this country and the world was Vivian Carter.

Born March 25, 1921 in Tunica, Mississippi, Carter moved to Gary as a child, and was well-known as an African-American record company executive, radio disc jockey and one of the co-founders of VeeJay Records. Vee-Jay Records was a major independent record label with acts including the Spaniels, Jimmy Reed, John Lee Hooker, Gene Chandler, Jerry Butler, the Four Seasons, and for a time, the Beatles. Gordon Keith, another one of Gary’s history-making record producers, who played a role in the city’s most famous family the Jackson 5, was also friends with Carter. Keith said he first met Carter when she and Tommy Williams played R&B music at radio station WJOB in Hammond in the early 1950s. He said he became close to her when she helped the Spaniels become famous, even though they were a problem for her. “She had to pay a lot of money to keep and get them out of jail a lot because of their child support payments,” shared Keith. He went on to say that Carter and her husband, Jimmy Bracken, had a record store on 16th & Broadway where they put out a record for Jimmy Reed, who had a lot of small hits.

According to Keith, he was the first artist on the Vee-Jay label. “From there, she recorded for the Staple Singers, John Lee Hooker and the Four Seasons.” Keith said she discovered the Beatles, who were the biggest in the record industry before the Jackson 5. “She discovered them and put their first record out in America. They were called the Highway Men in Britain, but when they signed with Vee-Jay they were called the Beatles.”

"In cold hard facts, Vee-Jay was founded in Gary, Indiana in 1953 by Vivian Carter and James C. Bracken (Mr. & Mrs. Bracken), who used their first initials for the label’s name. The first song they ever recorded made it to the top ten of the national rhythm & blues charts.

In a short time Vee-Jay was the most successful black-owned record company in the U.S.A.. By 1963, they were charting records at a faster rate than some of the major labels. They were the first company to have the Beatles; in one month alone in early 1964, they sold 2.6 million Beatles singles. Two years later, the company was bankrupt."

....

By May, 1966, it was all over, as Vee-Jay closed its Chicago offices, and filed chapter 11. Jerry Butler’s contract expired May 31, and he signed with Mercury. In the August 13th edition of Billboard, a small item read: “Curtain down on Vee-Jay as liquidation ordered.”

Sam Weiss of Old Town Records summed it up: “Vee-Jay came the closest to being the number one black-owned pop label. They had the Beatles before Capitol. They had the Four Seasons. They penetrated the white market like a cannonball going through butter. Had they overcome the family and financial problems that ultimately destroyed them, they could have become as big as Motown. They started as a rhythm and blues label, but they had the makings of a big, big major label.”

Layne Staley (Alice in Chains) - RIP (Far right).

As a promoter, I (next to him wearing the "Rage Against the Machine" Shirt) brought NINA HAGEN to a Seattle Venue called "Under the Rail" in the 90's and had the band, Second Coming open.

Layne was brought to the venue and sang the song "It's Coming after" with them. MTV was there too (they were "tipped off)" as this was the time of his "Hiatus" and the press were looking for "signs of life." They showed a clip on MTV....can't find the clip.

Next to me is Mark Nelson and Johnny Bacolas (both in 2nd Coming at the time).

Killer but Eerie performance. Song lyrics include the line "I'm gonna stretch your skin across her frame and paint it blue." Also saw him perform this song 2 other times at other venues, before this show...One at RKCNDY and the other at the Fenix Underground. Also, possibly the Colorbox.

Here is a clip of one of the performances (not the Under the Rail show) performing the song if you wish. Rare performance. ~ Dean Z

The fact that I had the opportunity to document the entire writing, recording, and production of this album is still hard to believe.

It's the Compact Disc, of course. Theme: 1980's (eighties) for Macro Monday. HMM

Sony and Philips marketed the first commercial CD devices and discs in the early 1980's.

Note: I'm not very familiar with 80's music, so I put a smooth jazz favorite on the turntable

John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers Concert, Capitol, Mannheim, Germany 1987

John Mayall, OBE (born 29 November 1933) is an English blues singer, guitarist, organist and songwriter, whose musical career spans over sixty years. In the 1960s, he was the founder of John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers, a band which has counted among its members some of the most famous blues and blues rock musicians. They include Eric Clapton, Peter Green, Jack Bruce, John McVie, Mick Fleetwood, Mick Taylor, Don "Sugarcane" Harris, Harvey Mandel, Larry Taylor, Aynsley Dunbar, Hughie Flint, Jon Hiseman, Dick Heckstall-Smith, Andy Fraser, Johnny Almond, Walter Trout, Coco Montoya, Kal David, and Buddy Whittington.

Born in Macclesfield, Cheshire in 1933, Mayall was the son of Murray Mayall, a guitarist and jazz music enthusiast. From an early age, John was drawn to the sounds of American blues players such as Lead Belly, Albert Ammons, Pinetop Smith and Eddie Lang, and taught himself to play the piano, guitars, and harmonica.

Mayall spent three years in Korea for national service and, during a period of leave, he bought his first electric guitar. Back in England, he enrolled at Manchester College of Art (now part of Manchester Metropolitan University) and started playing with semi-professional bands. After graduation, he obtained a job as an art designer but continued to play with local musicians. In 1963, he opted for a full-time musical career and moved to London. His previous craft would be put to good use in the designing of covers for many of his coming albums.

Since the end of the 1960s Mayall has lived in the US. A brush fire destroyed his house in Laurel Canyon in 1979, seriously damaging his musical collections and archives.

Mayall has been married twice, and has six grandchildren. His second wife, Maggie Mayall, is an American blues performer, and since the early 1980s took part in the management of her husband's career. The pair divorced in 2011 and Maggie wrote online about the experience.

In 2005 Mayall was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the Honours List. Source: Wikipedia

Motown Museum album covers and labels in Detroit museum.

The American music producer Quincy Jones (1933-2024) sadly passed on November 3rd.

In May of this year, artist Stephen B. Whatley got to pay tribute to the music genius as part of a major commission of his cartoon illustrations for the forthcoming memoirs of 1950s & 1960s film star, Mamie Van Doren (1931-).

In undertaking this commission of chapter illustrations over several months the artist has been privileged to absorb the many profound and exciting twists and turns in the extraordinary life of the beautiful blonde film actress, who shone on screen in such films as The All American (1953), with Tony Curtis; Teacher’s Pet (1958), with Clark Gable and Doris Day ; and High School Confidential (1958) with Russ Tamblyn.

Not only did Whatley absorb details of her stories but sought to capture visually the feeling and atmosphere of her memories - such as this scene when Mamie enjoyed a performance of Quincy Jones early in his career. Always a talented singer, Mamie had aspirations towards being a jazz singer at the time, loving such singers as Lena Horne and Dinah Washington.

Quincy was lead trumpet player and music arranger, performing here with Lionel Hampton & his orchestra at a jazz club, Club Oasis in East Los Angeles - and spotting Mamie ultimately led to a friendship and love affair.

Mamie Van Doren’s memoirs are entitled ‘Secrets of The Goddess’ due for publication in 2025….watch this space for further updates.

Tin Pan Alley and Guest: Louisiana Red, Badehaisel Wachenheim Germany 2004

Albert Koch - BluesHarp, Louisiana Red - Guitar, Vocals

Tin Pan Alley Band from Kaiserslautern, Germany has been playing a powerfully dynamic stage show in her very own style for over 30 years. Blues, stylistically flavored with many elements of rock, country, boogie and swing. Among the highlights were several, big appearances as a "back-up" band of the American blues legend Louisiana Red, numerous festivals. www.tin-pan-alley.com/

Iverson Minter (March 23, 1932 – February 25, 2012), known as Louisiana Red, was an African-American blues guitarist, harmonica player, and singer, who recorded more than 50 albums. He was best known for his song "Sweet Blood Call".

Born in Bessemer, Alabama, Minter lost his parents early in life; his mother died of pneumonia shortly after his birth, and his father was lynched by the Ku Klux Klan in 1937. He was brought up by a series of relatives in various towns and cities. Red recorded for Chess in 1949, before joining the Army. He was trained as a parachutist with the 82nd Airborne and was sent to Korea in 1951. The 82nd Airborne was not deployed as a complete unit in Korea, but soldiers from this unit were dispatched as Rangers in the 2nd, 3rd and 7th Infantry Divisions. Minter said he was assigned to the 3rd Infantry Division. After leaving the Army, he played with John Lee Hooker in Detroit for two years in the late 1950s. He recorded for Checker Records in 1952, billed as Rocky Fuller.

His first album, Lowdown Back Porch Blues, was recorded in New York with Tommy Tucker and released in 1963. His second album, Seventh Son, was released later the same year. Louisiana Red released the single "I'm Too Poor to Die" for the Glover label in 1964. It peaked at number 117 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 30 on the Cashbox chart. (Billboard did not publish an R&B chart in 1964.)

He maintained a busy recording and performing schedule through the 1960s and 1970s, working in sessions for Chess, Checker, Atlas, Glover, Roulette, L&R and Tomato, amongst others. In 1983 he won a W. C. Handy Award for Best Traditional Blues Male Artist. He lived in Hanover, Germany, from 1981.

He appeared in the films Rockpalast (1976), Comeback (1982), Ballhaus Barmbek (1988), Red and Blues (2005) and Family Meeting (2008).

In 1994, Louisiana Red fused the blues with the urban Greek music of the bouzouki player Stelios Vamvakaris, on the album Blues Meets Rembetika. He continued to tour, including regular returns to the United States, until his death. In 2011, Louisiana Red released the album Memphis Mojo, to broad public acclaim. Source: Wikipedia

Aaron Lewis - Staind

Welcome Home Ceremony, Mannheim, Germany 2006

Staind is an American rock band formed in Springfield, Massachusetts, in 1995. The original lineup consisted of lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist Aaron Lewis, lead guitarist Mike Mushok, bassist and backing vocalist Johnny April, and drummer Jon Wysocki. The lineup has been stable outside of the 2011 departure of Wysocki, who was replaced by Sal Giancarelli. Staind has recorded seven studio albums: Tormented (1996), Dysfunction (1999), Break the Cycle (2001), 14 Shades of Grey (2003), Chapter V (2005), The Illusion of Progress (2008), and Staind (2011). The band's activity became more sporadic after their self-titled release, with Lewis pursuing a solo country music career and Mushok subsequently joining the band Saint Asonia, but they have continued to tour on and off in the following years. In 2016, Lewis reiterated that the band had not broken up, and would possibly create another album, but that his then-current focus was on his solo career. The band reunited more permanently in 2019 for several shows, continuing with live appearances in 2020. Many of their singles have reached high positions on US rock and all-format charts as well, including "It's Been Awhile", "Fade", "Price to Play", "So Far Away", and "Right Here". Source: Wikipedia

(Not my photo )

...and you still love her songs ?

Nicki Minaj used satanic imagery during the Grammy's .Despite number of criticisms and how dark her statements were , she admitted about this presence of the entity ( demonic posession ) called Roman .Regardless of the odds ,her popularity soar to the highest. Her album "Pink Friday : Roman Reloaded " ( of the demon Roman ) rise up to Number one ,had an impresiives sales of the Album to 250,000 in just a week .

Full story here : Nicki Minaj's Satanic Imagery

> Nicki Minaj casually admitting the devil Roman lives in her

> Nicki Minaj performed "Exorcism" in the Grammy's

With young people cheering up like it is cool !

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~<<<~~~~~~<@
Does this not bother you ?
Her demonic agenda isn't anymore just a rumour and part conspiracy , she admitted herself in the open . She demonstrated what she's up to during the Grammy's , drawing increasing number of fans .
I am not a fan of Nicki Minaj but her music targets children at a young age !
Here's one from the Bible :
"The devil led Jesus up to a high place and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world.
And he said to him, “I will give you all their authority and splendor; it has been given to me, and I can give it to anyone I want to. If you worship me, it will all be yours.” ~Luke 4 : 5 -7
Since the devil tried to tempt Jesus , then he will always pursue with the same
old tricks to everyone ,including you and me .
He will take people at their weakest points as the target .
But lo and behold , if you are born anew in Christ you are an overcomer !
Even the gates of hell can not prevail against the church ( the church of Christ is NOT a building neither any religion full of human doctrines ) rather it speaks of the body of true christian believers who walk by faith in Christ - as His bride ,as the church !
You and me are the temple of God .
Don't defile or kill the temple by listening to devil worship songs and carnality of the world .
For Christians who adhere strongly in the faith , pray and always keep the armour of God :
"Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour." ~ Peter 5:8
(10)"Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.
(11)Put on the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
(12) For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
Ephesians 6 :10 -12
You see the times we're now in.
