Students from programs offered at USG and staff from the Priddy Library made "Multilingual Story Time" at the Gaithersburg Book Festival a success! The event was organized by the director of the Priddy Library, Irene Munster.
Student volunteers read stories printed in Spanish, French, Vietnamese, Hindi, Farsi and Korean to young children and their families at the festival.
The 2011 Multicultural Leaders in Sustainability group went on a trip to the mountain ash forests at Sherbrooke, Dandenong Ranges. Several of the MLS participants described this trip as the highlight of the program.
All of the participants live in the city and some have been in Australia for less than a year, so getting into Victoria’s beautiful natural environment was an eye opening experience. Seeing the bush, farmland, wildlife, a wind farm and the ocean put the sustainable living issues we’ve been talking about into a broader context. It also let some of our newest young citizens get an appreciation for Australia’s wild places, and compare them with those in the countries they’ve travelled through on their way here.
