Out shooting a Muir creek last Thursday with Johnny Trevor. Taking advantage of the dark skies and nice weather. Lost some gear wasted some fireworks but still got some shots. Lighgtpainting single exposure 30 second. The sky is enhanced in lightroom.

After holding for a westbound coal train, MRL R-LAUBOZ1-30 returns east with plenty of power up front. All but the first two engines would get set off at Livingston, but they provided an extra push to bring the train up the west slope of Bozeman Pass. Typically the eastward return of the Laurel-Bozeman job runs under the cover of darkness, but their crew expired the night before, allowing these daylight views on the pass.

Had to make a parking reservation to walk in the Muir Woods coastal redwoods a bit north of San Francisco, but it was worth it.

The Yosemite National Park's John Muir Trail in California. It leads to Vernal Falls and beyond. It's a great park with lots of trails for different skill levels. Do your research before going. It's a park and there is wildlife.

Such an awe-inspiring natural area, just north of San Francisco

HTMT!

Just another lovely quiet scene from the John Muir wilderness of California. We backpacked up here and stayed for several nights in this incredible location overlooking this idyllic lake.

With the news of Montana Rail Link slated to disappear in 2022 I figured I'd join the club with some photos. Alas I've only spent a couple very short days along the road while in transit to other places so I have very little coverage. I hope to join the parade of visitors this next year to right some of that wrong before it's too late. But until that happens, if it does, I'll dig up a few more

The MRL has operated the former Northern Pacific mainline across its namesake state since 1987 when it entered into a long term lease of the line between Billings, MT and Sand Point, ID from NP successor Burlington Northern. While the majority of traffic on the MRL consists of overhead BNSF trains they do operate a pair of daily manifests of their own and assorted locals serving line side industries across the state.

Anyway, about 40 minutes after taking the prior shot the MRL's Livingston Local is climbing the last mile of 1.8% grade to the crest of 5702 Bozeman Pass on MRL’s 2nd Subdivision Mainline. The little train is approaching the Quinn Creek Road crossing and the west end of the 8685 ft siding at Muir here near MP 127 in command of GP35s number 404 and 405. These locomotives most assuredly feels right at home in conditions like this as they were both built new for the Rio Grande in Jan. 1965 as DRGW 3043 and 3047 respectively and spent their first three decades crossing the Rockies across the likes of legendary routes such as the Moffatt Tunnel, Tennessee Pass, and Soldier Summit. And though it looks fine in Washington Companies blue paint I sure would prefer it in black and Grande gold!

Sadly I'm sure these veterans won't be long for this world when BNSF reunites the old NP once again under it's orange and yellow banner.

An eastbound BNSF grain train rolls down Bozeman Pass at 'Muir' on MRL's 2nd Subdivision during a heavy summer snowstorm.

I hadn't planned to chase the Bozeman turn today, and I definitely did not plan on following them as far as Muir... But at some point along the chase I ran some extremely guestimated math and figured they'd still be in daylight climbing Bozeman Pass.

I arrived at Muir to see the sun was just about rubbing the peak behind me, guessing again I had about 15 minutes of daylight before the station sign (something I wanted to incorporate into the shot) would be shadowed over. Additionally, I didn't know how far ahead of the train I was, I just banked on them making a quick run up the mountain.

With roughly 10 minutes of direct sunlight left, the train rounded the curve and was quickly in frame.

Years of watching videos, enjoying photos of old school MRL power climbing the pass, and never did I think I'd get to be out in Montana working for MRL. Not to mention, never would I have thought I would be lucky enough to see, even just these two, SD45s climb to the summit. Factor in the down-to-the-minute timing with the sun and it made for a little bit of magic on the side of Bozeman Pass.
