Back during the ATS/SD40N era on the Harvard Subdivision, it was always cool to see standard cabs SD40N rebuilds leading. Just after the Metra rush, an Empty grain train with an SD40N notches up near the Chicago Suburb of Mt. Prospect, IL.

This old diner burned to the ground in 2007. As I work on backing up old digital images going back to 1999, I came across this one shot in 2005 that I wanted to get out online.

Photo of the fire tower at the top of Mt. Prospect in Weeks State Park in the town of Lancaster, New Hampshire. The tower is 52 feet high, was built out of stone in 1912, and since 1941 has been used by the New Hampshire Forestry Service as a fire tower. The tower is registered as a National Historic Lookout, and is open to the public. The 360 degree scenic views from the top are incredible.

After the crew for LJA50 died in proviso the night before, a relief crew was called to deadhead the train, and its cars, back to Janesville, WI. Heres the deadhead hauling through downtown Mount Prospect.

When I was in high school there was speculation the the C&NW needed to buy new locomotives for its Chicago area commuter service. There was a claim the the C&NW had ordered FP45s with head end power units instead of steam generators. In 1970 the C&NW ended the speculation by purchasing four KCS E units, including 5031B, which was originally KCS 23. Imagine the shock to a loyal North Western fan; E8As with number boards. The first time I remember seeing a C&NW E8A that did not have a bald nose. CNW E8A 5031B

Mount Prospect is located 22 miles northwest of Chicago with a population of 54,167 in 2010.

This Jewel built in the late 90's and is actually the 4th Jewel in the area over the years. The previous Jewel was behind this Jewel facing the opposite direction. The other 2 Jewels one was located in the former Randhurst mall. 1.bp.blogspot.com/-mX5nQ9A1rnQ/TbTkn8bXMdI/AAAAAAAAEQw/pl... Another former Jewel was located just a mile north in the Prospect Shopping Center on the southwest corner of Camp McDonald Rd. & Elmhurst Rd. (Rt. 83) in Peospect Heights, Illinoiis.

Rand & Elmhurst Rds. Mount Prospect Illinois. Opened in 1962, closed in 2008. Original department stores at Randhurst were Carson Pirie Scott, Wieboldt's and the Fair Store which later became Montgomery Wards. ,1,000,000 sq ft total retail space in the mall. The mall when built was designed different than any other mall. Malls were built in straight lines where Randhurst was built triangular with the 3 main department stores at the points of the triangle. When entering the 3 main entrances to Randhurst were lockers, many pay phones & drinking fountains. The mall had 3 floors. The main floor and basement for shopping and top floor for office space. Later the top floor became a food court. In the 1990's Kohl's, Bergner's and JC Penney took over the 3 department stores. The building of Woodfield in Schaumburg Illinois took many customers away from Randhurst and the building of Deer Park Oudoor Mall really effected Randhurst. Stores inside the mall slowly closed till decided to shut down and then the mall was demolished. Early years of Randhurst included a Jewel Grocery Store attached to the mall, Kresge, Randee's Restaurant, P.J.'s Trick Shop, Tart N Tray, Baskin. Kroch & Brentano's Books, Florsheim Shoes, First National Bank of Mt. Prospect, Paradise Tours, a shoe repair store, The Gap, Great American Shoe Store, S&H Green Stamps Center etc... Outside the mall in early years was General Cinemas, Randhurst Twin Ice Arena, Golden Bear Restaurant, Twin Link's Mini Golf, Barone's Pizza later to become Stagger Lee's, Holiday Inn Hotel, and close by Butch Maguire's.

Today's Picture is of a potato crop at Mount Prospect, between Blampied & Newlyn, 12km West of Daylesford. Potato's are a large industry for those on the land around these parts with most having a contract with the chip maker McCains. Those that don't will supply locally through the supermarkets and have their own road side store. Rich volcanic soil make it an ideal crop for farmers although when the weather just threatens and never rains it means they have to use big irrigation sprinklers like the one in the picture to maintain the crop.

Engine is named after Mt. Prospect Illinois a northwest suburb of Chicago.

Looks pretty cool if you...View On Black

I wish I had done this 15 years ago, before all the major renovation, but since I couldn't do that, I got these pics somewhere in early to mid-November 2008.

It's Randhurst mall, closed now for renovation, and not to open again (in whatever form it may take) until 2010.

It's changed a lot since I worked there in the late-late 80's/early to mid-90's, where i worked doesn't even exist now, that entire wing has been lopped off. well, you know what they say, "You can't go home again"
