This is Little Zigzag Falls near Rhododendron, Oregon. I can't believe it took me this long to go there.

I have seen this referred to as Little Zigzag Creek and Little Zigzag river at various places. The map says it's a river. Hiking websites call it a creek.

I made a return trip to the Barlow Wayside Trail last weekend. We had some wonderful sunlight soming through the trees as evening approached. It lit up he branched in a most spectacular way.

I thought that there would be a good chance at a sunrise this morning, so I packed up the cameras, and headed for Crown Point. The road getting there was a bit, shall we say, mobile, because there have been landslides in the area, and a certain section of the road just before Crown Point is slowly sliding down the hillside a few inces a year, but other than that, it isn't a too harrowing drive. The sunrise did not disappoint. I present it here as I saw it.

The western forests around Mt Hood are some of the mossiest , ferniest places in the world. Gaia and I were exploring today, looking at places to photograph, and we came across the Barlow Wayside Park. Many of you already know if you have followed my work for more than a few years that I am an infrastructure geek. I love bridges, roads, and buildings, but only if they are old, and preferrably historic. I have posted about the Historic Columbia River Highway, the Saint Johns Bridge, the Hood River Hotel, and places like those for years. One historical roar that I have been curious about, but have not been able to really sink my teeth into, is the Barlow Road. It was part of the Oregon Trail, and parts of it still exist. I drove on two sections of it today, and the second section made no sense based on where the first section was. So... It's time to look at the original route, and see how it fits together, and do some more exploring in the area.

There is a creek called Little Joe Creek that runs through this area, but it's not of much interest at this spot. The trees, with their wavy, moss covered branches are much more interesting. That said, I think I'm going to go back and see if the creek has some more interesting things to show.

I took some 8x10 black and whites there too, so hopefully I will be able to post those after I develop them.

I had to put the tripod into the creek for this one, while I stood beside it trying not to fall in. I was standing on some old, downed trees that had very little rigidity left, and that hung out over the water a few feet. Water flowed underneath, and I worried about falling in. Well, I didn't, and I made it out dry.

This is Little Zigzag Falls near Rhododendron, Oregon. It is located in the foothills west of Mt. Hood. I am taking a hatis from my explorations of the Columbia Gorge to focus on the Mt. Hood area. I hope to do some hikng and more photography in the area very soon. I want to see how the seasons change there.

I took the Twirly Camera out to the Zigzag River a couple of weeks ago, and made a 1.5 second exposure on a bridge at the Paradise Park Trailhead. The sun was almost shining, as it sometimes does in the pacific northwest, and a little dappled light flitted among the branches. I almost destroyed the film when I opened the camera back, thinking that I had used the last picture, but had not, then I almost destroyed it while loading it on the reel in the darkroom, and then almost destroyed it by forgetting which step I was on while developing it. I got two usable pictures out of 6. That's a 1/3 success. I'll take it.

There are lots of good sights to be had when hiking in the Mt. Hood National Forest. This was one of them that I passed by last weekend.

Mount Hood Wilderness Area near Mount Hood Oregon.

I love little known trails into untouched wilderness.

A gem off of the beaten path and a first time sighting of this waterfall in the Mount Hood Wilderness.

A lenticular cloud settles on Mt Hood in this long exposure/twilight blend taken this summer, when Mt Hood was seemingly devoid of snow.

I've actually begun work on a video series for workshop students, and I'll be going over my workflow for twilight blends. If you'd like to hear more about my instruction, feel free to message me for details.

Thanks for checking out the photo!

Ramona Falls in the Mt. Hood Wilderness Area is huge! Check out the tiny looking tree trunks at the top of this frame in order to gain a sense of her size! When you round the bend in the forest trail and the falls come into view, it's as if you are seeing a giant ghostly apparition dancing there among the trees!!!

Ramona Falls is one of my favorite waterfalls in the Pacific Northwest. Oooh la la!

This is one of my top favorite waterfalls in Oregon. What a gem!

Played around up by Mt Hood last weekend checking on fall colors, which are starting to really pop up there! Decided to make the beautiful hike up to Tamanawas falls in the thick mist and foggy atmosphere. Happy Waterfall Wednesday!

I've said this before, but with a photo like this, it's always present in my mind: the first moment I fell head-over-heels in love with photography was a moment like this one. I stood on the overlook by Lower Lewis River Falls with my little Canon point-and-shoot. I did my first intentional long exposure, looked at the screen, and proceeded to grin like a maniac. There is something about water that inspires this deep feeling of utter contentment in me.

This is from a few weeks ago at Ramona Falls. Truly an amazing wall of water!

2.5-second exposure - Hoya Moose polarizer/warming filter

Ramona Falls.

I love the details of Ramona Falls more so than the scene as a whole. This photo was made yesterday during the mid day light. There were bright spots with direct sunlight on them, shady areas as well as a cool little rainbow across the botttom of the scene. In all I would consider the time spent there yesterday as magical.

I try not to let my familiarity of this location hinder the fascination that I felt on my first visit there. I feel that I could visit Ramona Falls a thousand times and still see it differently each time.

The hike in to the falls was complete by sharing the spot with three that had yet to visit there. Jamey Pyles his girlfriend Hanna and his buddy Gabe made the trek in with me yesterday. We had a great day. :)

The trick is to get as low as possible while keeping the camera dry. You will know when you are close because you can feel the cold radiating from the water into your hands, because you took your gloves off to make sure they didn't accidentally hit the water causing unwanted ripples in the stillness and to prevent them from sponging up freezing water. A hike out of a snowy forest is less enjoyable without gloves or with wet gloves. And when you reach that razor thin distance above the surface of this still, nearly frozen pond of water, like everything else in the forest, you hold your breath for fear of disturbing the wonderful stillness of the scene and you actually flinch a bit with regret when the clump of the Hasselblad firing breaks that exquisite frozen quiet.

Ramona Falls and Velvia are born for each other, combining into one of those heart-stopping moments when you look at your slides for the first time and remember how beautiful it all was to behold. I love using both film and digital cameras--they have so many wonderful differences. Every time I compare shots taken with each, I'm amazed at how one will capture an entirely different mood or moment than the other. How wonderful that we photographers have the opportunity to play with so many wonderful toys, each capable of something amazing. I took this shot on the same day with my digital--what a dramatic difference.

I love this little tiny piece of Ramona. I'm a huge fan of stairsteppy waterfalls (like Fairy Falls and Henline), and Ramona is one of the best I've seen. It's like molten silver pouring over onyx.

Taken with Fuji Velvia 50, a polarizer, and a Pentax MX.

Up on Barrett Spur the wind was utterly HELLACIOUS. I could only stand it for a few minutes before I turned around and headed back. Greg stayed to admire the view. :)

Our friend Nick joined Andy and me for a fun and invigorating hike to Ramona Falls yesterday. This beautiful waterfall puts me in mind of another land in another time!

I have made this hike in the winter several times now, and several times I have stood at the edge of this frozen lake and stared across it fascinated by the snowy forest on its opposite shore staring back at me. Long has it been one of those scenes that has stirred something in me, but I have never been able to figure out how to get that into a photograph. I keep trying, hoping that my casting about will eventually uncover the nuanced language I need to communicate what this sight holds for me. Not even this image does it. I like this image a lot mind you, but remembering what it looked and felt like to stand there, I realize that this image is talking about something other than that. But that is ok in this case as I recognize the things it is saying are still well worth hearing/seeing. But I really do enjoy the puzzle of this particular patch of forest. It is something that will keep me coming back winter after winter. And maybe I will never solve its puzzle. If that is the case, I won't mind because then I will have had a lifetime mystery to chase, one of many, and that is a wonderful thing to enjoy.

This was taken the same day as this shot with rasone's Sigma 10-20 mm wide angle lense. Thanks for the offer, rasone. Now I really really have to get one.

Or resilient.

The trees that live in such places never cease to amaze me. I could barely spend an hour or two up here, let alone decades.

This is my first night shot, shooting stars & the milky way up in the Mt Hood Wilderness. It was a fun day & night.

Ramona Falls, Mount Hood Wilderness Area, Oregon.

One of the shots that I made today with Frederique and Hillary on our walk to the falls. It was a great day to be outside.

There was a lot of sunshine while we were photographing the falls, but it worked out fine. The light at Ramona Falls doesn't distract from the photo, in fact it gave us some unique opportunities to shoot a few rainbows that were in the mist and some detail shots like this one.

I love Ramona Falls a lot. I hope that you like this one. :)

Rainbows and golden light illuminate this waterfall cascade in the Mt. Hood Wilderness, Oregon.

Ramona Falls taken this morning.

I had a nice hike this morning with my excellent Flickr contact Raj. Please check out his great work.
