A foggy hike out of the Yellow Aster Butte tarns in late September.

These are the reasons I love the North Cascades: the vista of endless snow-capped peaks catching the last light of the sun, with many such spots within an easy day's hike of civilization, as well as places to escape into the remote wilderness where you are unlikely to meet a soul.

The price to pay is the incredibly short summer season where many such places are actually accessible, and makes you realize the real value of time. I find the opportunity cost that you pay of working full time is the limited window of a few weekends when you can really explore the PNW Wonderland, while balancing familial and social commitments, as well as travel urges to places outside the northwest. The pandemic this year has made things more challenging for all, but it gave more time to explore local destinations which have become more crowded than prior years.

I have often wished whether I could change that balance and adjust the tradeoffs, but so far, it has proved challenging.

“Embarrassed”

Headed out on my days off from the gallery to take Foxy for a hike and shoot sunset. I have done a ton of hiking in the North Cascades, literally thousands of miles. I am embarrassed to say I had never done this hike before! What! How can that be? Did I think I had already done it? I don’t think so. In my mind are there just too many other good hikes in the area to return to? I am not sure how something like this can happen. I am perplexed. Or maybe the universe just wanted me to hold off to hike it at this time, in this moment, so I could have this experience. I will go with that, as Foxy and I had a truly magical experience. I loved the hike up through the Old Growth Forest, then breaking out into meadows, then hiking around the summit to come up the backside to discover a 360 view. (For now, this hike must remain unnamed, sorry) Then a beautiful night hike out! … I will certainly be back to shoot this again and again. A little earlier in the summer when wildflowers are out, as it looked like there was a ton, and again in the fall when the blueberries turn color. Whatever the reason this was not on my radar before it sure is now, and I cannot wait to do it again. Thank you so much for looking.

Every time I camp in the mountains, I look forward to the colorful sunsets and the dramatic sunrises. And when the conditions are right, I sometimes wake up to the classic Cascade sunrise where sunlight pours over the endless ranges of silhouetted mountain ranges. And in the next few hours, the pale orange sky and warm silhouettes slowly transform to a clear blue sky, where the rays stream between the gaps in the ridges and the valleys. Meadows that were in the shadows at dawn, slowly take on the lush mid-day green, and splashes of colors from vibrant fireweed and bright parsnips highlight the scene.

There are few places still in the North Cascades where this vision of a lush summer can still be experienced. I was glad to get experience one this summer season.
