The honey beetle (Meligethes aeneus) also called rapeseed beetle, is a very small beetle (0.06 to 0.1 in long) shiny black in color with metallic reflections on the back, and with club-shaped antennae .

As honey beetles are attracted to the color yellow, they are active from the beginning of spring, as soon as the temperature approaches 11°C. We can observe the first flights in March, as they head towards plants, generally Brassicaceae (rapeseed, mustard, etc.), to feed on pollen.

Exhibition of Mehdi-Georges Lahlou at Le Delta (Namur, Wallonia).

I am sensitive to this artist’s struggle against ethnic, religious, and gender stereotypes, as well as to the tribute he pays to Moroccans who died as victims of the use of mustard gas during the Rif War. This tribute takes the form of very dark charcoal drawings, so dark that one must stand very close, directly facing them, in order to make out any details.

In the exhibition’s videos, the artist gives visual form to the queer performers Diwe Augustin-Clave, Dr Lady J, and CHIMI Nature, entrusting them with the memory of palm trees.

The picture reveals a fascinating architectural corner that captures the essence of Dijon’s historic heritage in France. The composition features an old octagonal stone well with a protective cover, set against a sturdy ashlar masonry wall displaying the natural wear and patina of centuries. Above the well, an elaborately carved stone corbel depicting a lion supports a wrought-iron pulley mechanism, an exceptional example of the engineering and craftsmanship of the period. On the right side of the composition, a blind arch and a painted wooden door with traditional raised panels and dark iron fittings complete the scene, suggesting an entrance to the inner quarters of a noble or monastic building.

From a historical and architectural perspective, this setting reflects the grandeur of the Duchy of Burgundy, whose administrative and cultural center was the city of Dijon itself. During the 14th and 15th centuries, under the rule of the influential Dukes of Burgundy, the region experienced a period of economic prosperity that attracted master stonemasons and artisans from across Europe. The masonry visible in the image, with its regular ashlar blocks and intricate sculptural details, such as the lion corbel, is characteristic of late medieval architecture and the transition toward the Burgundian Renaissance. These elements served not only essential practical purposes, such as drawing water or providing structural support, but also acted as symbols of status and power, reflecting the prosperity of a court that came to rival the French crown itself in wealth.

Today, Dijon is renowned not only for its exceptionally well-preserved architectural heritage, which attracts visitors from around the world, but also for its importance in French culinary culture. The city is internationally famous for its mustard (moutarde de Dijon), traditionally made with verjuice (verjus), the juice of unripe grapes, rather than vinegar, giving it a sharp and distinctive flavor profile. Visitors exploring its historic streets can also enjoy other deeply rooted regional specialties, including traditional gingerbread (pain d’épices), crème de cassis, and the iconic boeuf bourguignon. This rich gastronomic heritage, intertwined with historic limestone monuments such as the one depicted in the image, makes Dijon a destination where visual history and the culture of the senses converge beautifully.

This species feeds mainly on Cruciferous plants, such as Tourette, Velars, Garlic and Wild Mustard, but its favorite remains Cardamine. In addition, the female moth lays her eggs on this host plant.

Unfortunately, this plant is becoming rarer, following the drying out of wetlands, cultivation, the artificialization of meadows, excessive spraying, not to mention insecticides and other phytosanitary products. As a result, the population of Anthocharis cardamines is also declining: the two species being particularly linked, if the plant disappears, so does the butterfly...
