Summit view of Lake Winnipesaukee, from Mount Major, Alton, New Hampshire.

Trail review, map & more photography.

Just off Alton Bay at the South end of Lake Winnipesaukee is the rightfully popular hike to the summit of Mount Major, providing spectacular views across the whole lake region eleven hundred feet below.

Just taking it all in. Photo credit to the one and only Caitster.

Just on a road trip. At this point, were just exploring the back roads. I was the passenger and the driver was reluctant to stop so this was shot out the passenger window at 80kph on a bumpy C road.

Good light and perfect foliage from one of the most popular summits in New Hampshire.

I like to use natural framing within my photos, so when I saw this branch I wanted to use it within a series of shots capturing the seasonal changes. I was disappointed the next time I went there to see that the branch had broken off in a storm. I do, however, still have this photo.

I don't usually go back and revisit my photos however I remastered this (see below) as part of the Dookie Earthed Event

I have heard of some photographers coupling their photography with music. The pairing of the music and the photo is done deliberately, almost like a meal and a fine wine, and the end result is that the combination is greater than the sum of the parts. I have always thought it must be difficult to find the right music to match with the right photography.

Luckily (or I guess unluckily), I will never have that problem with this photo here, as it will forever in my mind be linked to a specific song. The morning I made this photo, I hiked up Mount Major for sunrise. It was Memorial Day weekend, so I figured it would be crowded on the summit, but I was hopeful it wouldn't be too busy due to the early sunrise time (5:11 am) and the threat of rain. As I approached the summit, I heard two dog owners yelling their dog's name and blaring country music. The song was "She Thinks My Tractor's Sexy" by Kenny Chesney and the dog's name, well I will keep that to myself, since he seemed like a nice dog, maybe a bit unruly, but I don't want to put him on blast. Aside from them, there was no one else on the top, but they made enough noise for a whole crowd.

The sun broke through the clouds and bathed the landscape with an incredible orange glow. I tried to make a good photo. Two minutes later, the sun was tucked away behind the clouds never to be seen again that morning. It was nothing short of majestic. When I see the photo now I want to hear something bombastic like Beethoven, but I can only hear Chesney.

Some heavy fog in the early morning on Mount Major

I’ve wanted to photograph this tree from the moment I saw it years ago. It’s so weather beaten, siting unprotected up on top of Mt Major. It also looks like white ants have at some point had a go at it, and the trunk is slipt the whole way through, which you can make out in the photo. The family and I decided to walk up there much to my youngest protesting continually. I don’t know what she was complaining about, I was carrying all the camera gear!

I'd been trying to get a photo at roughly this location for a while and was never happy with the result. There is a dead tree just off to the side which I had always been trying to incorporate into the photo. This evening I thought I'd start from scratch and scout out a new location, and came across this little dip almost like a gully, and thought I'd found the spot I had been searching for. I love the patchwork of canola field stretching out towards the horizon.

Autumn comes when you're not yet done.

Cairnon the top of the Mountain

Taken from the top of Mount Major right after sunrise. The fog totally covered the lake and rolled into the mountains in Gilford.
