Following my motto of bad light equals black and white, here is one I captured midday on a blustery overcast day in Northern Minnesota on Lake Superior.
If you look close you can see the icicles hanging from the rocks. I had walked on the top of the pier minutes earlier and could have gone ice skating. The waves had been so high everything including some of the chains between the posts were encased in ice. It may not look all that high from this angle but looking down off the pier standing on the ice was quite concerning.
And if anyone is still reading, I hope everyone has a wonderful Christmas and New Year. I really appreciate everyone's kind words and favs over the last year. It's so nice we can all appreciate each others work from all over the world.
Looks like the City of Lompoc will be looking for a new motto -- the real history started when Burpee Seed left decades ago. With our 400 acres now growing lettuce instead of flowers it just won't be the same --- Salinas Valley is nice, but nobody drives around the fields and marvels at all those acres of green.
Unter diesem Motto habe ich am vergangenen Sonntag mal was neues ausprobiert. Die allseits bekannte Stelle am Bü Posten 113 zwischen Kaub und Lorchhausen hatte ich schon paar mal unter anderem mit den Loks vom Henkelzug umgesetzt und war für mich inzwischen ziemlich ausgelutscht. So sollte am Sonntag mal was neues mit Hochstativ ausprobiert werden. Etwas weiter hinten positionierte ich mich dann und setzte die E10 228 mit ihrem Sonderzug aus Koblenz anstelle des Schrankenwärterhäuschens an der imposanten Felswand um.
Erst seit etwa 2 Jahren ist diese Felswand auch so schön sichtbar, da sie vorher mit meterhohem Gebüsch zugewachsen war. Erst bei den Hangsicherungsmaßnahmen und die damit verbundene Rodung kam die Felswand wieder zum Vorschein.
On the way back from Chama, we quickly stopped at Ghost Ranch to take a few shots of the Milky Way because the sky had finally cleared. It was about midnight and as soon as we had set up, the moon peeked over the horizon.
Still, I added some light of my own to the cabin.
Completely dark skies were not in store for us that night. So the motto for the evening was to make due with what we were given. I know the composition could have been better, but my excuse is that I was really tired at that point and just wanted to plop the tripod down to start shooting so I could get home.

...könnte man das Motto des diesjährigen April-Urlaubs bezeichnen. Bei katastrophalen Wettervorhersagen trotzte man doch wieder mal den Bedingungen und konnte einige Aufnahmen in der Brünner Umgebung machen. Hauptziel für mich waren die Schnellzüge nach Luhačovice, welche im 2h Takt den Kurort mit den Metropolen Tschechiens verbinden. Gleichzeitig sollte auch der neue Star des DKV Brno-Maloměřice unterwegs sein. 754 043 war erst vor gut 2 Monaten von der HU in Zvolen wiedergekommen und glänzt im neuen Design vor sich hin.
Knapp war es und doch klappte es dann beim 4. Versuch. Hier zieht 754 043 der ČD ihren R 884 Luhačovice-Praha Vršovice in vollstem Sonnenlicht durch das Tal bei Polichno.

Nach diesem Motto rollen aktuell die privat betriebene Fernzüge durchs Land.
So waren am 22.04.19 im FLX 1802 von Köln Hbf nach Hamburg-Altona nicht weniger als 4 verschiedene Farben bei den eingesetzten Wagen zu beobachten, als der Zug bespannt von 193 813 in Essen-Kray Nord am Fotografen vorbei rollte.
Following the motto "The best is saved for last," I've been holding back my favorite poppy field photo from this year. And so, just before the end of the year, I can share a truly wonderful Poppy Monday with you.
The highlight of this photo is the single bloom in the foreground on the left, as you can see inside.
It's always fascinating for me to catch a glimpse of the people I meet.
I'm amazed by the complexity and depth I encounter.
In these moments, I often realize how similar we all are, because we all share the same basic needs, and there are essentially only seven of them. With a stronger awareness of this fact, the majority of conflicts would simply be obsolete.
On the other hand, every individual is unique with their own story, desires, fears, and passions, which makes this glimpse inside even more exciting.
However, to gain this insight, two things are necessary.
Firstly, a positive perspective, which means approaching other people openly and without prejudice (or at least with little prejudice).
Secondly, a certain closeness is necessary, because individual details are usually not visible from a distance. This means taking your time and being genuinely interested.
In this way, encountering other people (regardless of nationality, religion, or political or ideological orientation) can be like visiting a treasure island.
And so I wish you a joyful Advent week in which you might manage to find (or rediscover) one or two treasures.
Frei nach dem Motto "Das Beste kommt zum Schluß" habe ich mein Lieblings Mohnfeld Foto von diesem Jahr bis jetzt zurück gehalten. Und so ist es mir möglich, kurz vor Jahresende, mit Euch nochmal einen echten Mo(h)ntag zu begehen.
Das Highlight auf diesem Foto ist die eine Blüte im Vordergrund auf der linken Seite, da man hier ins Innere blicken kann.
Auch bei den Menschen, die mir begegnen ist es für mich immer wieder faszinierend, wenn ich einen Blick auf ihr Inneres erhaschen kann.
Ich bin begeistert von der Vielschichtigkeit und Tiefe, auf die ich dabei stoße.
In diesen Momenten wird mir oft bewusst, wie ähnlich wir uns alle sind, denn wir alle Teilen die selben Grundbedürfnisse und das sind im Grunde nur sieben. Mit einem stärkeren Bewußtsein für diese Tatsache, wären die Mehrzahl aller Konflikte einfach obsolet.
Auf der anderen Seite ist jedes Individuum ein Einzelstück mit einer eigenen Geschichte, eigenen Wünschen, Ängsten und Leidenschaften, was diesen Blick ins Innere noch spannender Macht.
Um diesen Einblick zu erhalten bedarf es jedoch zwei Dinge.
Zum einen einen zugewandten Blickwinkel, was beim Umgang mit anderen Menschen bedeutet ihnen offen und vorurteilsfrei (oder zumindest vorurteilsarm) entgegen zu treten.
Und zum Zweiten bedarf es einer gewissen Nähe, denn aus der Entfernung sind individuelle Details meißt nicht sichtbar. Das bedeutet sich Zeit zu nehmen und ehrlich interessiert zu sein.
Auf diese Art kann die Begegnung mit anderen Menschen (ganz gleich welcher Nationalität, Religion oder auch politischer oder weltanschaulicher Ausrichtung) wie ein Besuch auf einer Schatzinsel sein.
Und so wünsche ich Euch eine fröhliche Vorweihnachtswoche in der es Euch vielleicht gelingt, den ein oder anderen Schatz zu finden (oder wieder zu finden).
...heisst übersetzt: ohne große Umstände - ganz einfach.
Zumindest die Fassadengestaltung entspricht dem Motto. Oftmals bekommt man in solch kleinen Restaurants aber ganz hervorragende Menüs mit frischen Zutaten vom Markt. Und das zu moderaten Preisen.
Nur Zeit sollte man mitbringen.

Onder het motto 'Op Weg met de Blauwe 55'ers' organiseerde de TSP op 4 juni 2011 de afscheidsrit van de blauwe reeks 55 van de NMBS. Ingezet werden de loc's 5515 en 5540 van TUC-Rail. De rit begon te Brussel Noord en voerde via Aarschot, Tongeren, Visé, Angleur, Verviers en Welkenraedt naar Raeren. Van daar weer terug richting Angleur en Kimkempois. Vanuit Kimkempois via spoorlijn 36A naar Y Voroux (Ans) en vervolgens via Waremme en Leuven terug naar Brussel Noord. Ter hoogte van het uitrijsein van Raeren duwt loc 5515 de excursietrein richting station, voorbij aan loc 5540. Rechts ontwaren we de ex NS-loc 2454, ex SNCF-loc 662454 van Rails & Traction, thans (2022) loc van de Stichting 2454 CREW.

Some say the mail carrier motto is "Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds".
But what about a tornado? The tornado that tore through Mayfield certainly left its mark on the postal system. According to the Paducah Sun, the Mayfield Post Office partially collapsed and lost 80% of its roof. All of the equipment inside was destroyed. However, the mail must go on. A team from Louisville came down the following day to start the clean up process and secure the building. Incredibly, the postmaster said that only one delivery day was missed. Mail would resume the following Monday for those would could still receive it.
Sadly there is no word on when the Mayfield Post Office will reopen. However workers are making repairs on the building and the post office has been relocated to a temporary location for now.

Am gestrigen 6. Januar 2022 war sie nämlich mit der ersten Übergabe nach Oberheutal zu Gange als sie kurz vor Hütten von mir Fotografiert wurde.
Nachdem also nun bereits ÖPNV über die Schwäbische Alb von Schelklingen bis Trochtelfingen wieder stattfindet, ist nun auch Güterverkehr wieder vorhanden auf der Einst Militärisch genutzten Strecke.
Zwar wurden schon die letzten Jahre hin und wieder ein wenig Güter auf der Strecke befördert durch SAB GmbH in Form von Holzwagen, so stellt aber trotzdem diese Neue Leistung ein neues sehr Interessantes Kapitel dar.
Drücken wir allen die Daumen das auch weiterhin wieder viele Züge auf der Einst Stillgelegten Strecke Fahren werden!

Unter dem Motto „Weihnachtsmärkte am Rhein“ fand am 15. Dezember 2024 eine Sonderfahrt des Vereins DBK Historische Bahn von Schorndorf nach Mainz und Rüdesheim statt.
Auf der abendlichen Rückfahrt legt die 1961 bei Krauss-Maffei gebaute Einheitslok der Deutschen Bundesbahn mit dem Zug einen kurzen Ausstiegshalt in der Rhein-Neckar Metropole ein, genau passend für eine Langzeitbelichtung.
The state motto is "Crossroads of America," not "Pothole of America" or "Detour of America." Crossroads have special needs of continuous maintenance and upgrades to facilitate transit. Just sayin'.

Onder het motto "wat heen gaat, komt ook weer terug" reden we naar Biskupice, waar we de volgende trein met de 754 075 weer op konden wachten.
De kleurrijke loc was onderweg met "Slovácký expres" R885 (Praha hl.n. - Luhačovice) en kon net als een dag eerder met de 754 012 op deze stek worden gefotografeerd

On March 13, 2019, Ecuador announced that it will withdraw from the organization. The president of the country, Lenin Moreno, also asked the bloc to return the headquarters building of the organization, based in Quito.

Overshadowing the Mitad del Mundo monument is the headquarters for the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR), called 'Nestor Kirchner' in honor of the former Argentine president and fronted by a statue of him. A startling modernist building, with gravity-defying cubist structures resembling a misshapen spaceship, it was designed by Diego Guayasamín and opened for business in December 2014.
The construction of this cathedral started in 1185, but changes and additions were made right through to the 18th century.
The Latin inscription on the clock reads "Operibus Credite" which is the first part of the full motto "Operibus Credite, et non Verbis" which means "Believe in deeds, not words." Or, more colloquially, "Actions speak louder than words."
Van 20 tot en met 27 september 2009 werd onder het motto ‘Reisen wie vor 50 Jahren’ een drietal jubilea gevierd: 150 jaar Nahetalbahn, 20 jaar Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Neckar en 10 jaar Rhein-Nahe-Nahverkehrsverbund. Het evenement was een mengvorm van een ‘Dampfspektakel’ zoals er tussen 2000 en 2018 in totaal zes in de deelstaat Rheinland Pfalz zijn georganiseerd en een klassieke ‘Plandampf’, met een financiële bijdrage van de spoorwegliefhebbers. Het evenement werd hoofdzakelijk gefinancierd door de twee jubilerende Verkehsverbünde en het Zweckverband Schienenpersonennahverkehr Rheinland-Pfalz Süd en werd uitgevoerd door Revierdampf. Het streven was zoveel als mogelijk het spoorwegbedrijf ter plaatse van 1959 na te bootsen. Dat ging zelf zo ver dat locomotieven werden aangepast en vernummerd naar locomotieven die in 1959 in deze omgeving rondreden. Loc 01 066 van het Bayerische Eisenbahnmuseum verloor haar klassieke uiterlijk en nummer en werd een DB-01 met het nummer 01 045. Loc 38 1301 van de ÖGEG werd weliswaar uiterlijk niet aangepast, maar wel vernummerd in 38 3156. Het zwaartepunt van de activiteiten lag op de lijn Neustadt an der Weinstraße via Mannheim en Heidelberg naar Heilbronn en ‘zijlijnen’, maar op zondag 20 september was de beurt aan de Nahetalbahn (Bad Kreuznach naar Saarbrücken). Er werd vanuit Bad Kreuznach tot Baumholder gereden. Ook loc V 200 033 van de Museum Eisenbahn Hamm deed mee. Deze vertrekt uit het station van Fischbach-Weierbach met een met extra P trein van Bad Sobernheim naar Baumholder.

Lok 38 1301 der ÖGEG wurde äußerlich zwar nicht angepasst, aber erhielt die Betriebsnummer 38 3256. Fluctuat nec mergitur is the motto of Paris, France, translated "Elle est agitée par les vagues, et ne sombre pas": "She is tossed by the waves but does not sink". This motto is present in the city coat of arms depicting a ship floating on a rough sea. Both motto and city arms have their origins in the river Seine boatsman's corporation; this powerful hanse ruled the city's trade and commerce as early as the Roman era.[1][2]
Although this corporation through the centuries became an entity resembling more a municipal government than a trade organization, they maintained their original arms and motto, and it is for this that the Mairie de Paris bears them still today. It was made official on November 24, 1853 by the Baron Haussmann.[1]
The motto appears on the coat of arms of the City of Paris, as well as on the official livery of the Paris Fire Brigade. Following the November 2015 Paris attacks, the Latin-language motto had a surge in popularity and was used in social media as a symbol of Paris resistance in the face of terrorism.

Felbrigg Hall
Glory to god in the highest, is the English translation of the Latin motto emblazoned in very large stone letters on the front of the hall. The estate originated with the Felbrigg family. It passed to John Wyndham, who died in 1475, it then remained in the Wyndham family for centuries.
Thomas Wyndham who died in 1522 was a councillor to King Henry VIII. Later residents of the hall included John Wyndham (1558–1645) who was the builder of Felbrigg Hall as we see it today. The last Wyndham of Felbrigg was William Wyndham who died in 1810.
The last owner of the house, before it passed into National Trust ownership in 1969 was Robert Wyndham Ketton-Cremer. His heir, his brother Richard, was killed in action in the Second World War.
The estate covers around 800 acres, it includes a lake, a walled garden, parkland and woodland.

The Monument to the Great Fire of London, more commonly known simply as the Monument, is a Doric column in the City of London, near the northern end of London Bridge, which commemorates the Great Fire of London.
The top of the Monument is reached by a narrow winding staircase of 311 steps.

Veranstalterteam LoRie organiseerde onder het motto ‘Dampf trifft Kies 3’ van 22 tot en met 24 oktober 2009 een Plandampfevenement op de Werrabahn tussen Eisenach en Meiningen. Er werd deelgenomen door vier locomotieven: loc 41 1144 van IGE Werrabahn uit Eisenach, loc 41 1150 van het Bayerische Eisenbahnmuseum uit Nördlingen, loc 52 8079 van Dampfplus uit Dresden en loc 18 201 van DB Museum uit Halle. Deze loc reed ook een keer ’s-avonds tussen Eisenach en Bebra. In de vroege middag van 24 oktober 2009 vertrekken de loc's 41 1150 + 41 1144 uit Meiningen met trein DGz 93355 naar Bad Salzungen.
Veranstaltungsteam LoRie organsierte nach dem Motto ‚Dampf trifft Kies 3‘ vom 22. Bis zum einschließlich den 24. Oktober 2009 eine Plandampfveranstaltung auf der Werrabahn zwischen Eisenach und Meiningen. Es wurde von vier Lokomotiven teilgenommen: die Lok 41 1144 von IGE Werrabahn aus Eisenach, Lok 41 1150 vom Bayerischen Eisenbahnmuseum aus Nördlingen, Lok 52 8079 von Dampfplus aus Dresden und Lok 18 201 von DB Museum aus Halle. Unter dem Motto „Weihnachtsmärkte am Rhein“ fand am 15. Dezember 2024 eine Sonderfahrt des Vereins DBK Historische Bahn von Schorndorf nach Mainz und Rüdesheim statt. In der Fotokurve bei Frankenthal-Studernheim konnte der authentische Bundesbahneilzug mit E10 228 an der Spitze auf der Hinfahrt abgepasst werden.
Onder het motto 'Op Weg met de Blauwe 55'ers' organiseerde de TSP op 4 juni 2011 de afscheidsrit van de blauwe reeks 55 van de NMBS. Ingezet werden de loc's 5515 en 5540 van TUC-Rail. De rit begon te Brussel Noord en voerde via Aarschot, Tongeren, Visé, Angleur, Verviers en Welkenraedt naar Raeren. Van daar weer terug richting Angleur en Kimkempois. Vanuit Kimkempois via spoorlijn 36A naar Y Voroux (Ans) en vervolgens via Waremme en Leuven terug naar Brussel Noord. In Kinkempois staan de loc's 2729 + 2743 + een onbekende loc van de reeks 27, rechts staan de loc’s 1803 en 6227 + 6613 van de NMBS.
